Why Skype to Discord?

Why did you skip Skype and go on with Discord? Seriously, why?! GogglesKunInkling(Talk|Contribs) 23:23, 15 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There's a bunch of reasons! The ones I can think of right now are:
  • Developed primarily for gaming communities
  • NIWA and several other NIWA wikis already use it
  • No advertisements
  • More control over a server with user roles, channels, bots, etc.
So far, I think the switch was a good one. ~SuperHamster Talk 00:58, 16 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'll extend that!
  • Easier joining
  • Does not require all your personal information
  • Browser web-client actually works
  • Large voice chat
  • Push to talk
  • File transfer is quicker
  • Block formatting of text. Skype trims whitespace.
  • Can integrate with other services via bots, e.g. posting of Splatoon rotations or Twitter messages...
  • Rooms are part of a server and keep conversations on topic. Skype requires separate chats, which get lost easily.
  • Discord is lighter on system resources and starts up much more quickly.
  • Has online/offline/idle/streaming. Skype requires you have people in your contacts to see this information.
  • It's free. Skype has a paid plan for better features.

Should Inkipedia use an independent Discord server?

Currently, Inkipedia uses the ABXY Discord server, a server used for several wikis.

Some ABXY Discord users have requested a separate, independent Inkipedia Discord server.

This is a community vote and discussion about the idea. The vote will last for 2 weeks but may be extended to 4 weeks if there is a tie (or extremely close tie). Votes will not be accepted from accounts made after the start of this vote.

To see what an independent Inkipedia Discord server could look like, use this invite link: https://discord.gg/RzjXNuSU.

If this community vote supports the idea, then the plan is roughly this:

  • Create Inkipedia Discord. Most of the work is already done: [1].
  • Prioritize wiki discussion, and allow Splatoon and general discussion as well, with channels for each topic.
  • Have rules that mostly mirror Inkipedia policy.
  • Have a mostly separate staff, with current Inkipedia wiki staff welcome and encouraged to join the Inkipedia Discord staff.
  • Keep the old channels open on ABXY Discord, as there are years of discussions in the #inkipedia and #splatoon channels.

Please vote and discuss your thoughts and ideas. Heddy (talk) 20:06, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  1. I'm a little biased because I made the thing but I think it is an extremely valuable resource to have an independent server. I believe that it will be easier for new users to join and immediately understand where they are and the purpose of the server--something that ABXY is not exactly the clearest about. Furthermore, with more specific channels both about the site and for some casual splatoon gameplay, I think there would be greater odds for more in-depth conversations and better interactions. Inkipedia has the userbase size to effectively be run independently and it could work to encourage new users to join and help out, especially with Splatoon 3's release. What better place to celebrate your recent Splatfest victory than in a channel specifically dedicated to it? Trig - 20:19, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  2. Seconded. Just a silly little goose ^.^ (talk | contribs) 00:12, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  3. Agreed, since there's too much for Splatoon to be limited to a single room. Dry Paper Hammer Bro (talk) 20:28, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  4. i think, in addition to having better interactions in general, having those interactions in the first place could generate more interest in contributing to the site in more detail--i find the ABXY server to be a bit intimidating, and i find that i'm reluctant to discuss how i can help and contribute out of worry that i'm not conducting myself the way others are with their wikis. having more of a dedicated space could help users get out of their shells a bit! Orderpunk (talk) 20:49, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  5. Agreed with all the above. More channels and a more specialised space will help liven up the community and also help with organizational matters. Also less clutter from the other wikis, even after the changes to hide the channels by default ~ Nick the Splatoon Fanboy S2 Mem Cake Inkling Squid.png Chat Contributions 20:37, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  6. Support, having an independent server allows for a lot more versatility with channels, allows for certain discussions and topics to not get buried, and is easier for new users to understand, as well as just being better than using a server that's mostly for topics unrelated to this wiki that they didn't join for (which would also hopefully help user retention, as well). The existing server can still exist for the purpose of questions/discussions related to the Wiki platform itself, and for the other Wikis that are on it (as well as for this one, just to redirect to the new server), just like there is, for example, still a Fandom/Gamepedia Discord server. 7. I want a place where I can see only the best Splatoon memes. None of that F-Zero crap. The Epicness9000 (talk) 20:45, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  8. I agree with you all. (Although I am neutral on the memes.) I support the suggestion with all my hearts.--MissDelibirda (talk) 20:47, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  9. Definitely agree. Would help keep actual editing organization more... well, organized. ~Camwoodstock & Tori! (talk) 21:05, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  10. Don't have a lot more to say besides what was already stated, but I super agree! I think it would be great as a way to organize discussions better and prevent topics from getting lost. | ☆ ninckvinny ☆ Talk 00:00, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  11. I have to agree. From the perspective of someone new it both feels odd to join a discord with so many wikis when you're only seeking to help a single one, but also I have to wonder what it's like from the other perspective. If Inkipedia really is overpowering in relative user numbers it would only make sense to break off. I 100% agree with the one opposing opinion though, being a little more defensive about rules and proper protocol is only natural with a public server like that. HellRaven (talk) 01:15, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  12. I agree. I think that an independent would be good. I actually thought the discord server was it's own inkipedia server, so I would really like an independent server. Randomguy (talk) 04:13, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  13. Having our own independent server would be nice. My main reason would be that then we can have different channels for discussing different topics, rather than having five different discussions about five different topics in the same channel. EminenceTalk 00:16, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Oppose

  1. I am really unsure of which I'd prefer, as I see strong points for both arguments, but I'll mention my biggest reason to oppose below:
So, I must point out that with the current setup, a lot of people with very low attention spans come to the server on a daily basis, see the orientation of it all, and leave because they don't bother to think for five seconds to go to the rules channel. If the point of this server is to mitigate that "issue", then first of all, that's their choice, and if we want to somehow "reel them back in", you really need to question if it's even worth it in the end. People like them do not nearly have the patience and dedication it takes to be a wiki editor. They might have the desire to help Inkipedia, but the structure of their minds contradicts this, as they might make an edit (or several to their user page) and move on to something else (sometimes yelling at others in the process).
These people, who are often adolescents or younger, are (obviously) very prevalent in the Splatoon community specifically, and the point I'm trying to make here is that, we don't want these people here. They are not productive, not patient, and are probably better doing something else besides editing wikis.
All of that is why I recommend making the Inkipedia policy a lot stricter if we were to create a dedicated server for the wiki. Thank you for reading a teenager's angst about other teens. Discussion

  • No opinion – I feel like it'll operate more or less the same either way, have the same sorts of discussion, etc. I don't think it's a huge deal no matter what the decision is! –Eli (talk) 20:38, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • No opinion as well, but I don't understand why we even have a discord server. Isn't everything needed for a good and healthy discussion already on the site? The whole Splatoon community in general is spammed with discord servers and they all offer the same stuff. I wouldn't need another one so it doesn't matter to me whether it's on the ABXY server or a dedicated one. Strohkoenig (talk) 22:23, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Neutral. I don't really have any issues with the current server. I don't mind a new server just for Inkipedia either.  GX_64 (talk)  01:32, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Neutral. I dont use the discord, but i guess it would feel more right to have our own. Shiny Champion (talk) 14:18, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Princewave A few people including me have concerns like yours about non-wiki users harming the goals of the wiki. I would like to hear anyone's ideas about how a new Discord server could be made to serve the wiki's goals, rather than just become a social spot for talking about everything except improving the wiki. I'm not certain I can agree that having a multi-wiki server is a good deterrent to those possible problems, as it actually removes some of our power to shape the server to be what we want it to be. An indepedent Inkipedia Discord server would be controlled only by Inkipedia, so we have the power to prevent problems and make it the ideal place to discuss the wiki. Heddy (talk) 21:31, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • (User:Heddy User:Princewave) I agree partly with this, but I want to add - this is volunteer work, everything here is labour of love. Even if someone just fixes or changes one or two things, that's productive and valuable, and people have no obligation to do anything else, or help with specific projects. Surely we want to bring in new users and editors, even if they make mistakes at first - it's still valuable and good for wikis in general. Having a server that can be shaped to fit the goals of the wiki is a good idea in my opinion, but I also think that generally having social spaces in the server can be good too, as it keeps people in the community, and provides a space for people to interact in something other than the environment of Wiki discussion - because, as it is, in the current server I would never go to the general channel, since most of the people there are working on completely different projects. Inkublu 🖤 (talk) 02:17, 23 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Something worth adding, we feel, is that we'd probably be able to just deal with people not taking the Discord seriously/otherwise using it as a means to try to argue or stir up drama the exact same way we'd handle it on the Wiki. Y'know... Punishing that, instead of letting it run rampant, just like we do on talkpages or the like. It's already against the wiki's rules to be toxic, unpleasant, or otherwise just kinda rude like that, and if this was an officially sanctioned Discord for the wiki, we would probably have to make the conscious decision to not only make it so the Discord doesn't follow the Wiki's rulings, but also not include such rulings to counter potential harassment or uncivil behavior. We have it in good faith that nobody would reasonably decide to forgo measures to maintain civility without doing so explicitly on accident for some reason. ~Camwoodstock & Tori! • This vote is now closed. It appears that there is overwhelming support. The new Discord server is now up and running! Heddy (talk) 22:27, 6 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

new link

should we put a link for discord on this page? -Xtream- (talk) 21:00, 12 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

My eyes might deceive me, but there are two different links to join our discord server on this page. If you don't have an account, Discord will prompt the creation of one before joining. Trig - 21:02, 12 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
