An Inkling jumping into water in a pre-release version of Camp Triggerfish
Don't fall, Agent 3! You know we sea creatures can't swim! (Heh heh...)

Water is a terrain feature in the Splatoon series.

Description

Water is a liquid found in many stages, Octo Valley missions, and Octo Canyon missions that causes Inklings and Octolings who touch it to dissolve, splatting them.

One of our interns recently saw a squid guy fall into a creek during a Turf War, and guess what?! The squid dissolved! This suggests that these creatures can't maintain a solid form when submerged in water. Does this mean that they're actually made of liquid?

Use

In a few multiplayer stages, such as Arowana Mall, water is used as a hazard to splat players who fall in. It is often placed strategically under grated walkways and platforms so that players who become squids while on said platforms are forced to respawn. Water also surrounds Saltspray Rig, Bluefin Depot, Camp Triggerfish, and many other stages.

Appearances

Saltspray Rig

S Stage Saltspray Rig.jpg

Saltspray Rig is an oil rig off the shore of Inkopolis, surrounded by water. However, because of Saltspray Rig's height, Inklings who fall off the edges of this stage will always be splatted by out-of-bounds limitations rather than the water itself.

Arowana Mall

S2 Stage Arowana Mall.png

Arowana Mall is built next to a beach and includes several water features. For instance, the central platform is surrounded by water, and falling through a grated walkway into this area will cause Inklings to respawn.

Bluefin Depot

S3 Stage Bluefin Depot.png

Bluefin Depot is surrounded by water. When leaving a team's base, the grated walkways to the left and front are located directly over water. The two central areas are also encircled by water, meaning that missed jumps and poorly-timed Inkzooka blasts can force Inklings to respawn.

Camp Triggerfish

S2 Stage Camp Triggerfish.png

Camp Triggerfish is built on top of a lake, meaning that a misstep can force the player to respawn. This stage also includes a multitude of walkways and platforms built out of net, and using squid form while on most of these platforms will plunge them directly into the water.

Hammerhead Bridge

S3 Stage Hammerhead Bridge.png

Hammerhead Bridge is surrounded by water, though it largely exists as part of the background and rarely causes splatting as opposed to out-of-bounds limitations.

Museum d'Alfonsino

S3 Stage Museum d'Alfonsino.png

There is a fountain in Museum d'Alfonsino. Players who don't watch their step can fall in. This is most often when the tower is moving over it in Tower Control.

Mahi-Mahi Resort

S3 Stage Mahi-Mahi Resort.png

Mahi-Mahi Resort is surrounded by water. There are lots of platforms where missed or incorrectly timed jumps will force the player to respawn. When there is 1 minute and 30 seconds remaining in Regular Battle, the water level drops, revealing more platforms. In Ranked Battle, the water level drops when certain conditions are met, except for Tower Control, where it drops immediately.

Piranha Pit

S2 Stage Piranha Pit.png

Piranha Pit is surrounded by water. If the player accidentally falls off the island, they will dissolve and be splatted, but if they fall off high platforms, they will be splatted by out of bounds limits.

The Reef

S2 Stage The Reef.png

Small pools of water are on the corners of The Reef. While mostly out of the way, hopping from the side route to the left of spawn to the center area with the trees may cause players to fall into the water and dissolve, therefore returning to their respawn point.

Starfish Mainstage

S2 Stage Starfish Mainstage.png

Starfish Mainstage is a concert hall built in the middle of a small pond. As such, falling off the sides of the stage will cause players to fall into the water.

Inkblot Art Academy

S3 Stage Inkblot Art Academy.png

Small pools of water can be seen on both sides of the center of Inkblot Art Academy. If the player falls off the lowered areas on the left and right side of the stage, they will dissolve in the water.

Manta Maria

S3 Stage Manta Maria.png

Manta Maria is a ship surrounded by water, but players are splatted by out of bounds rather than the water, causing players who fall out of bounds to respawn. There is a gap between two small platforms on one side of the stage that has to be jumped across, where players are most likely to fall out of bounds.

Snapper Canal

S2 Stage Snapper Canal.png

A river runs through the center of Snapper Canal, causing there to be a line of water that runs through the center of the stage. Additionally, the river can be seen on the sides of the stage, though players will likely not fall into this water, as it is mostly fenced off.

Wahoo World

S3 Stage Wahoo World.png

Wahoo World is set on a boardwalk, surrounded by water. The water is out of the way of the battleground, but players can jump off the side of the stage and fall in.

New Albacore Hotel

S2 Stage New Albacore Hotel.png

New Albacore Hotel is a stage enclosed by water. There is a wide gap between the two halves of the stage, where players either have to jump across or walk across grate walkways. Missing the jump or turning into a squid on the walkways will result in falling into the water and respawning.

Skipper Pavilion

S2 Stage Skipper Pavilion.png

Skipper Pavilion is surrounded by water, which players will dissolve in if they fall off the sides. Additionally, two holes in the middle of the stage are above water as well.

Furler in the Ashes

S2 Stage Furler in the Ashes.jpg

Furler in the Ashes is the only variation of Shifty Station that prominently features water. Much like Mahi-Mahi Resort, when there are 1 minute and 30 seconds left on the timer, the water level will drop, revealing more turf. Although there are many gaps in the stage, they can be safely traversed using Inkfurlers.

MC.Princess Diaries

S2 Stage MC.Princess Diaries.png

MC.Princess Diaries is surrounded by water, as it takes place outside the remains of the demolished NILS Statue. If players fall off the sides of the stage, they will fall into the water.

Octo Valley and Octo Canyon

Water can be found in some levels of Octo Valley and Octo Canyon, such as Propeller-Lift Playground, as a hazard to Agents 3 and 4.

Eeltail Alley

S3 Stage Eeltail Alley.png

Eeltail Alley features drops into canals full of water on either side of the spawn area. Although the main stage features drop-offs into these same canals bordering certain walls, these are treated as out of bounds pits instead of water.

Hagglefish Market

S3 Stage Hagglefish Market.png

Hagglefish Market is a seaside marketplace completely surrounded by water, which players will dissolve if they fall into.

Brinewater Springs

S3 Stage Brinewater Springs.png

Brinewater Springs is an outdoor onsen that features two small pools of spring water bordering the central area. Although the water is not particularly deep, and in fact jellyfish can be seen bathing in it, players will still dissolve if they fall in.

Barnacle & Dime

S3 Stage Barnacle & Dime.png

Barnacle & Dime is set in a large pool within a large mall. Players will dissolve if they fall in.

Alterna

The six main "Sites" of Alterna are all surrounded by water, as are the settings of many individual Missions.

Shipshape Cargo Co.

S3 Stage Shipshape Cargo Co..png

Shipshape Cargo Co. is a semi-submersible cargo ship, surrounded by water. Players will dissolve if they fall in.

Trivia

  • If the player gets splatted by water, the time it takes for them to respawn will be shorter than if they got splatted by other means. This means that jumping into water deliberately can be a useful strategy if a player is about to get splatted by an opponent but is near to water.
  • It is implied that not just Octolings but all Octarians are unable to survive in water, as they took part in the Great Turf War for land in response to rising sea levels.
  • Jellyfish appear to not have the same problems Inklings and Octolings have with water, as they can be seen on boats, swimming in the water at Mahi-Mahi Resort, New Albacore Hotel, and Brinewater Springs, and fishing with their long tentacles.
  • After an Inkling or Octoling dissolves in water, their gear and main weapon are shown sinking in the water.
  • While water in its liquid form is lethal to both Inklings and Octolings, they are seemingly unaffected by frozen water, as evidenced by the ice in Alterna. Marie mentions that the snow is fake, as they are underground.
  • In the Splatoon manga, if an Inkling enters water outside of battle, they are not splatted but simply sink to the bottom, as seen in Chapter 4: Aloha, as well as in Chapter 23: Salmon Run, in which Goggles falls into the sea, survives, and somehow ends up in the Deepsea Metro.
