Deep Cut

Template:InfoboxCharacter Deep Cut is a band in Splatoon 3. It is a trio composed of an Octoling named Shiver, an Inkling named Frye, and a manta ray named Big Man.

They are the hosts of Anarchy Splatcast, the news show of Splatsville, and also host Splatfests, with Shiver, Frye, and Big Man each representing one of the three teams in every Splatfest, fulfilling the roles of the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook from previous Splatoon games. During broadcasts, Shiver and Frye take seats on cushions on the ground on the left and face the audience, while Big Man holds a large TV on the right on which news announcements appear, also facing the audience. They can be found in the news studio to the left of the Battle Lobby Tower. In addition to their day job as presenters, they work in secret as bandits to steal treasure to sell it and split it between the poor people, while keeping a small amount for themselves.

There are two more songs by Deep Cut (both Return of the Mammalians songs), but they are not yet named.

Return of the Mammalians

Deep Cut appears as antagonists in Return of the Mammalians, warning the New Squidbeak Splatoon that Alterna is theirs to plunder and challenging them to battle when they refuse to leave. Frye, Shiver, and Big Man are thus fought as the bosses of the second, fourth, and sixth sites, respectively.

After all three of its members are defeated, and they are promised ownership of the “treasure” they were looking for (in fact a broken tool) after Marie gives it back to them, Deep Cut assists the New Squidbeak Splatoon in stopping Mr. Grizz's plan to cover the world in Fuzzy Ooze. During this, they beg Marie to be their boss.

Trivia

• This is the only idol band to:
  • Be a trio.
  • Have a member that is male.
  • Have a member that is not an Inkling or an Octoling.
  • Not have a song that plays in a credits sequence.
• According to a Splatoon 3 developer interview, Shiver and Frye do most of the singing while Big Man composes the tracks. The same interview also reveals that each of Deep Cut's members are descendants of families that have overseen Splatsville's traditional festival (the predecessor to Splatfests) for generations.
• Each member draws inspiration from different cultures, demonstrated both by their designs and their solo songs during the first half of Splatfests, with:
  • Frye being based on Middle Eastern/Indian culture.
  • Shiver being based on Asian/Japanese culture.
  • Big Man being based on Brazilian culture.

Etymology

The term "deep cut” is used to refer to a more obscure song by a well-known musician. Like the Japanese band name, “Cut” in the band's name is also a reference to minced seafood.
