I am Octavio is a song performed by DJ Octavio.

Description

I am Octavio is an electronic dance composition. It features what appears to be rapping, possibly by an Octarian that could be Octavio himself, along with various record scratches. It includes a chorus singing part of the Onward! jingle that plays at the end of every Hero Mode level, which is also interpolated in Eight-Legged Advance and later, Octavio's remix of Bomb Rush Blush.

The song is prominently played during the final boss of Splatoon, in which the structure of the song also sets up a comedic scene. Once Agent 3 enters the level, they are greeted to the Great Zapfish and a tied up Cap'n Cuttlefish. The Agent skeptically approaches, expecting a trap, and the Zapfish is promptly sucked up by a machine that is revealed to the grandiose sound of the song introduction. The song than starts properly, with the reveal of the actual song's dance music nature, and the reveal of DJ Octavio himself, who scratches the record discs with wasabi sticks. Octavio promises to "remix" Agent 3's face, and proceeds to battle them, all whilst simultaneously performing and occasionally dancing to the song.

The song and its variations are played until the fifth and final phase of the battle, where the Squid Sisters hijack the set and play the Calamari Inkantation. It can be also be heard in Squid Beatz after playing the mission.

In Splatoon 2, it is revealed through Sunken Scroll 2 that the battle was somehow interpreted by the Octarians as an underground music show, with Octavio's performance of the song thought as an "opening set" to the Squid Sisters.

Other versions

I am Octavio (Phase 1)

This version removes various elements, such as the rapping, bells, record scratching and the Onward! interpolation motif, for a less intense version. It is only played during the first phase of the fight, as continuing onto the next parts plays the original.

I am Octavio (Missile)

This version is a very stripped-back version of the track, with an alarm-like effect continuously playing to signify the urgency and danger of the event, as it plays once Octavio fires a large missile which needs to be volleyed back at him. Once the player either hits Octavio three times or fails, the song changes again to the normal version, or the "Phase 1" version if at phase 1.

I am Octavio (Splatune)

In Splatune, a medley of the three versions is included instead. The "Phase 1" version is played until 1:15, when a record scratch signifies the change to the regular version. This plays until 2:11, when another record scratch is used, and it switches to the "missile" variant. At 2:38, it reverts to the original version for the rest of the song.

This is also the version used in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (with the "am" capitalised). It is an unlockable track and has a chance of playing on Moray Towers, and can also be heard in the Sounds section in the Vault menu.

Samples and interpolations

Splattack! (Octo)

Dedf1sh's remix of Splattack! at one point samples the intro of I am Octavio, which is also sampled in another DJ Octavio song, specifically his remix of Bomb Rush Blush.
