The Inkbrush is a main weapon in the Splatoon series.

As a roller-class weapon (brush-class in Splatoon 3), the Inkbrush can be pushed along the ground while leaving a trail of ink. Much like the Splat Roller, the Inkbrush can be used as a melee weapon that splatters ink in front of the player. Of all weapons in its class, the Inkbrush travels at the highest speed and leaves the narrowest trail. The high rolling speed can be used to quickly escape or approach an enemy. It has the lowest damage output in its class; four flicks (or five bumps while rolling) are needed to splat an opponent. The Inkbrush consumes 2% of the ink tank capacity per flick, allowing the player to fling 50 times before needing to refill the tank.

The Inkbrush is most comparable to the Octobrush, another paintbrush-like weapon. The Inkbrush is faster and more ink efficient while having less range and dealing less damage per glob of ink.

Appearance

The Inkbrush is designed with a paint tube in the middle, connected to paintbrush bristles and a blue handle with a textured black grip. The paint tube shows the player's ink color on the label, and a glob of the player's ink coats the bristles.

The Inkbrush was released on 5 June 2015. It comes with Sprinklers and the Inkstrike.

When using the Inkbrush, the player's Inkling holds the weapon on the right-hand side of its body. Usually, this does not affect the gameplay, but if a player makes a sharp left turn while in enemy ink, they get stuck in the ink.

When flicking the Inkbrush, there is a random chance that more than one glob of ink hits the opponent.

Sheldon's Introduction

The Inkbrush is similar to roller weapons, but it inks the ground as fast as you can dash! It's weak and a bit narrow, but you can make up for that with Sprinklers and Inkstrikes! I would recommend this weapon to anyone who wishes to try out a new type of fighting style!(NA)[a]

This is the Inkbrush! It's similar to Roller weapons, but it paints the ground as fast as a squid can dash! It's weak and a bit narrow, but you can make up for that with Sprinklers and Inkstrikes! I would recommend this weapon to anyone who wishes to try out a new type of fighting style!(EU/OC)[b]

A newly developed weapon with high mobility and a sturdy brush design. Its ink trail is narrow, but it paints the ground at incredible speed and delivers swift close-range attacks.
— In-Game Description
Holy Smokes, Splatfans! The Squid Research Lab just received an anonymous tip that a new weapon called the Inkbrush has been discovered. It's apparently similar to a paint roller, but a bit quicker to use. It's not the strongest offensive weapon but it comes with Sprinklers and Inkstrikes to maximize inking.

Quotes

S2 Sheldon Artwork.png
Sheldon's Introduction

The Inkbrush is a super-light brush weapon that lets you ink your way forward with blistering speed! It's not terribly strong, but you can make up for that by pairing that lightning speed with a Splat Bomb to confound your opponents! Splashdown will further stir up the front lines, so I'd put this set in the hands of those who like to disrupt the battlefield.

The Inkbrush returns in Splatoon 3. It comes with Splat Bombs and the Killer Wail 5.1. It was originally shown in a New Year 2022 teaser on Twitter,[5] looking similar to how it does in the previous games, with the difference being that its bristles are darker, resembling the Permanent Inkbrush's bristles, but more saturated.

It appears in 3 missions in Alterna:

Quotes

Sheldon's Introduction

The Inkbrush is a super-light brush weapon that lets you ink your way forward with blistering speed! There's not much room for power when you're moving that fast, but you can keep counterattacks at bay with plenty of Splat Bombs. Add the Killer Wail 5.1 to the mix, and you've got a combo that will confuse and annoy your opponents into submission! I can see it now... You blaze across battle lines... toss a Splat Bomb, and trigger the Killer Wail just in time to headbang along as the clock runs out. Whew! That's inking outside the box!

The Inkbrush isn't the most powerful weapon, but it makes up for it with style and panache, like our new tie-dye lab coats "someone" "ordered by mistake." It can be used to advance quickly while inking turf with dizzying flourishes, which can really mess with opponents' heads.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

The Inkbrush appears as Inkling's forward smash attack in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, alongside a variety of other weapons that she uses in her attacks.

When attacking, she charges up and swings the Inkbrush forwards to deal damage. This also coats opponents in ink but does not ink the ground. It deals much lower damage if Inkling is out of ink.

Trivia

  • The ink reservoir below the brush's head seems to made from an oil paint tube, fitting in with the art theme.
  • In Splatoon, this weapon and its variants are tied with the Luna Blaster and its variant for the shortest range stat in the game. It also has the shortest range stat in Splatoon 2.
  • According to The Art of Splatoon, around every ten matches, the Inkbrush's tube needs to be replaced.
  • In Splatoon 2, the Inkbrush was the first post-release weapon to added.
  • As of Version 4.1.0, the Inkbrush has the lowest possible damage output of all main, sub and special weapons in Splatoon 2 at 7.5 damage per swing.
  • As of Version 4.1.0, the Inkbrush is tied for the lowest base special cost in Splatoon 2, at 150p.
  • Despite appearing in numerous trailers and promotional art before the release of Splatoon, the Inkbrush was not available to use until it was added in a post-launch update.
  • In the trailer for Splatoon 3, multiple Inkbrushes are displayed hanging in the Ammo Knights building interior, visible through the glass window to the right of the door.
  • This is one of the weapons available to use in the Splatoon 3 Splatfest World Premiere.
