Deletion tag

Which English translation is primary?
Several pieces of gear have different English names depending on the localization (NA vs EU/AUS). Which translation are we prioritizing? For example, if we were to make a page for a piece of gear, would we use the NA name or the EU/AUS name as the title? Do we have site statistics that will let us know which countries our primary English-speaking audience is from? --sunmarsh (talk) 20:08, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
- I second this. We need to determine a wiki-wide code of editing based on where our visitors are from. For example, I changed "colour" to "color" because of a rule on a previous wiki I worked on, but this should be decided as a community. Thoughts? -ShrimpPin (talk) 22:49, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
- I would say in those cases, use the NA name as the main name, and then have the EU/AUS name in parentheses in the title, description, and/or infobox. If necessary, you could have redirect pages of the EU/AUS names. -Tristan Afro (talk) 03:31, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
- I would say to use American, as that's what the standard has been for pretty much all the Wiki's I've seen, I myself live in Europe though. For gear names, we can just use the UK names as redirects and mention them in the description of the item, not that big of a deal. - I say use American first, as it's very likely the most popular reader base, but don't just use European/Australian names in parenthesis. If people see a name, and then another in parenthesis, they could think that means anything, like an alias, a Japanese name, an early E3 name, etc. For normal text, do it like this: "The bla bla (yadda yadda in Europe and Australia) is...". For page names, call them by their American name, and on the opening paragraph, use the example I wrote in the last sentence. Espyo (talk) 13:54, 3 June 2015 (UTC)

- Looks good. This phrasing seems awkward to me to me though: "If you need help... the MediaWiki Help Contents are a good place to start." I would just say "MediaWiki:Help is a good place to start." False Splatoon Prima Guide Quote
A lot of the weapons have quotes falsely quoted to the Splatoon Prima Guide in the description (NOT the one in the "Notes"). These quotes are actually in-game descriptions from the weapons info. I changed a few of them to look like this: http://splatoonwiki.org/wiki/Splattershot (removed the "-Splatoon Prima Guide" and gave the quote it's own section). - I like the use of the quote template but I think that it's a bit much to give the quote its own section. I previewed a few edits, moving it around the page, I think it looks nice placed at the very top of the article, just after "The Splattershot is a Main Weapon in Splatoon." and before the Description section. - That sounds pretty good. But I wouldn't attribute it to Sheldon, because it doesn't officially state it's by Sheldon's quote in the game, as well as that some of the quotes refer to him in the 3rd person; "A Splat Charger modified by Sheldon..." so I doubt that they are. -Tristan Afro (talk) 22:36, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

- You can test out weapons by uh... pressing Y, I believe? When you're on the equipment screen. You get some useful tools to measure stats with, there. Espyo (talk) 13:54, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
License options

Linking

- Article sounds like the right choice to me. Makes more sense to me to link an article to an article; it's rare (if ever) to link to a category in an article body on most wikis. ~SuperHamster Talk 21:04, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

Info box

- Did not mean to save it like it is, but basically some of the parameters are from the wikia template. I added the parameters based on the template, so the only issue is the 'location' parameter at the moment. --SgvSth (talk) 23:31, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
Multilingual Glossary
Hi, I’ve made a template for a multilingual glossary since I’d like to know how items, characters or everything are called in each region. Here is an example:

So all you need is call the template

and add simple definition lines inside, like:

New rows should be added when we find other localizations (maybe Canadian French, Latin American Spanish? and if they have individual, different translation from Europe’s). Also, I added how to use to the template page itself. It needs a bit of rewriting when moved, so I left instructions as comments in the source code; please check it out. Clean-up Gear Pages
So currently there are Pages for Cooler Heads, Jelly Fresh, Shrimp Kicks, Headgear, Clothing, and Shoes. Between the shops and gear categories, there's a lot of redundancy in information since the bulk of the information is the actual gear. Personally, I think it should all be merged into one page for Gear or Shops (since there's so little other information on each page) and have each shop/gear category listed as a subheading. Each page would then redirect to that category- i.e.: Headgear would have the code (or something similar to):
#redirect [[Shops#Cooler Heads]]
Since every piece of Gear will (eventually) have its own page, the list of the appropriate gear under each shop , including gear awarded from amiibos and Hero Mode. The lists themselves don't need three individual pages. That's just clutter. I do think Ammo Knights and Weapons should be separate from these three though.
There also seems to be the page List of gear in Splatoon which is an unnecessary page that looks like someone started and forgot about.Vernanonix (talk) 15:58, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
- Agreed. Booyah Base can serve as an article for information about the stores themselves, one section per store, if there's anything of importance to say about them to begin with. Then weapon, shoe, etc. can serve as list articles. That general list article you linked to should probably be deleted. Espyo (talk) 16:10, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

- I agree with the consolidation of the individual shop pages into the Booyah Base page, however I hardly see how the List of gear in Splatoon is 'useless' or 'looks like it has been forgotten'. The list is continually updated via transclusion (click the expand button to show gear) from the individual gear lists and a list of gear all in one place would be very helpful for users trying to develop specific ability strategies across gear types. --sunmarsh (talk) 06:07, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
- When I looked at the List of gear page, the tables weren't expanding and it looked like it was a mostly empty page. My apologies. However, I do think it's unnecessary to have individual Headgear, Clothing, and Shoes lists plus a page with all three lists. Should we do similar here and have all three link to the List of gear page? Also, I see a lot of places linking to the Weapons Category page. - I agree that it's a bit silly to have three separate lists and one large one and would be in favor of moving the content from the separate lists into the main one. Before we do that though I think we need to resolve the concerns on Talk:Clothing. Tip: You can take Wii U screenshots
Didn't know this until recently, but you can take screenshots at any time where the HOME menu is accessible. You can upload them using the Internet Browser application. I tried uploading to Imgur, but it got stuck at "Pending..." so I used this "Postimage.org" image hosting site and it worked fine. The screenshots are 720p, so it's better than using Miiverse. - The difference in number of characters (or is it bytes?) in the page. So like, if a page said "ABC" before, but somebody changed it to "ABCDE", a green "+2" would appear, meaning that that edit is 2 characters bigger. It's useful for stuff like "-1234", which probably means somebody deleted a section, which should be looked in to. Espyo (talk) 13:27, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

- Honestly, the best way to learn it is to look at the code on pages that already have it. Once you mess around on wikis for a while, you start to learn the basics of the coding. From there, it's just copy and pasting from what works and altering it to suit your needs. Current Stages and Countdown
I really think the current stages and a countdown until the stages rotate are needed on the main page. Is anyone interested in updating the current stages every four hours? - Some ideas bouncing around:
- We should have a small tag such as "this page contains spoilers! Read at your own risk!" on top of sections/pages.
- For minor spoilers, a button to hide/show a section of text, or highlighting reveals the spoiler.
- For big spoiler pages such as DJ Octavio, have a landing page first asking them if they want to continue.

Image Capture
Hello there, just wanted to introduce myself, since you guys are doing a good job of make pages but the images are... eh. I figured since I have capture cards and hardware to make screenshots and videos of Wii U stuff (Mainly for my twitch stream , if you want I can take uncompressed screenshots etc for your guys (Nice clean 720p screenshots because the game runs natively at 720p most of the time). Would be especially helpful in the Sunken Scrolls page.

Google results
Because I am not familiar with this sort of problem, is there any way we can get Google to start showing this site as a result rather than the one on wikia? If I google "Splatoon Wiki" Inkipedia isn't even mentioned until the second page. Although it should be noted the wikia one does feature Inkipedia on the front page. Burritoburger (talk)
- This was discussed a bit today in the wiki's Skype chat. I did adjust our page title today so that ", the Splatoon wiki" is appended to the end of each page's title. That may help. In the end, the most deciding factor is how many other quality sites link to Inkipedia. Social media and other wikis typically have "nofollow" links, which don't impact search engine rankings - this deters spam. If we're linked from other sites though (fan sites, NIWA, maybe boards, etc.), that may help. I think the best we can do is to churn out quality content, increase our readership, and popularize the site through social media. ~SuperHamster Talk 02:46, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

Gear Name?
Hi guys! I'm new here. So the Black Moto Boots page caught my attention. Not only is it a stub, but as far as I know there is no such gear name in the game, only the Moto Boots (which is black) and the Blue Moto Boots. - Nice catch. You are correct- there is no such item. That page was created prior to the game's release and may be using a beta-name or a literal translation from Japanese. Since the item has no attributes listed there is no way to tell if it is referencing a shoe that made it into the game or not, therefore I have tagged the page for deletion. --sunmarsh (talk) 18:56, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
Articles or Categories
For several areas, there are categories that act like an article. Specifically Category:Shooter over the Charger and Roller articles. Same with the brands, except all of the brands are categories with no article to point to the category. Is it intended for the articles to be made later or will those areas be categories? --SgvSth (talk) 03:01, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
- In my opinion I don't think a category should ever replace the purpose of the article. Having information about a subject on the category page (like in the Shooter category example) is all right, but the respective article (Shooter) should have all that info, a list, and more. - Agreed, everything needs a category. I categorized all categories yesterday (cleared Special:UncategorizedCategories). But mainspace should be for article content, including lists, as said earlier. Categories should not have any content as such: only a summary describing what they are.

Substitution templates for new articles
We've got a lot of gear articles to write, so I thought I'd make the job less painful. I made {{NewShoes}} which is a substitution template for boilerplate writing. Simply use {{subst:NewShoes|<Brand>|<Cost>|<Main Ability>|<Star Count (1 or 2 or 3)>}} and hey presto, you have a new shoes article! You can see the first in-action test on this diff. Auto Refreshing Recent Changes
