Please to the shopping!
— Jelonzo upon entering Jelly Fresh(NA)[a]

Jelonzo is a blue jellyfish who appears in Splatoon and Splatoon 3. He runs Jelly Fresh, a clothing store in Inkopolis Plaza. Along with Jelfonzo and Jel La Fleur, he is one of the three known jellyfish able to speak the Inkling language.[1]

Appearance

Jelonzo is a blue jellyfish who has ovalish, conjoined eyes with rhombus-shaped pupils. In Splatoon, Jelonzo wears a purple and white mesh cap and a black scarf with big blue dots. He alternates between four different shirts each day: one is white with a blue, purple and pink fuzzy object and an eye in the middle, the second is black with a neon green jellyfish in the center, the third is white with an orange skull and white tentacles coming out of the bottom, and the fourth is orange and grey and emblazoned with several white jellyfish which resemble Goombas from Mario games.

In Splatoon 3, Jelonzo has a new variety of shirts that he cycles through, along with 2 different hats. His shirt worn on Tuesdays and Saturdays is a black shirt with a colorful design of a jellyfish, which he wears with a white cap with red Inkling lettering. His shirt worn on Mondays and Thursdays is dark green with a design that may resemble blue brain coral, and is worn with the same white cap. His shirt for Wednesdays and Sundays is orange, with a design resembling a jellyfish, and is worn with a purple cap with an orange symbol. On Fridays his shirt is primarily light grey with black sleeves and a black spiraling design which somewhat resembles a fish, and he wears the same purple hat. He also has a new scarf, which appears similar to his scarf from Splatoon but has a chevron pattern instead of spots, which he wears everyday.

Personality and traits

Jelonzo is the charismatic clerk that runs the clothing shop. With his uncanny sense for the hottest trends, he is viewed as a fashion god of sorts by all the young squids in town. He hails from distant waters and has a strange way of speaking that can make it difficult to understand him, but that may be one of the secrets to his success.[2] In the North American version of Splatoon, he also is known to say "BLUUH" occasionally.

In the Splatoon 3: Expansion Pass, Jelonzo speaks in proper Inkling, having become more proficient between games, but still refers to shirts as "body cloths", and still says "BLUUH" sometimes. A short amount of time before the game, he bought a house along a train line, which he is renovating.[3]

Jelonzo's version of DJ Lee Fish's song Lookin' Fresh is faded out except for the melody, the "center", because his gear goes on the middle part of the body. It also has many bubbly sound effects in the background, showing his bubbly and ecstatic personality as well as referencing his gelatinous species.

When a player below level 4 enters the shop:

  • "Welcome to Jelly Fresh! Thanks for sho--BLUUUH! Oh no! I'm so terribly sorry about this, but you are--how should I put this the most delicately--MOLDY. I can't sell body cloths to anyone below level 4. That's when you stop being moldy and start being fresh. But don't worry. If you hop into some Turf War battles in the lobby, you'll be fresh enough in no time. Then you can come back and shop to your heart's content!"

After spending at least 100,000 cash for the first time:

  • "Jelly Fresh! Wow, thank you for your repeated patronage. It really means a lot to me. In fact...I have a little something special for you. It's an honorary badge, symbolizing your dedication to buying the freshest body cloths around. I hope you like it!"

After spending at least 1,000,000 cash for the first time::

  • "Jelly Freeeeeesh! Ah, pardon me.I do get excited sometimes. And with good reason today! You've earned the highest honor I can bestow as a humble shopkeeper. It's the ultimate badge--one that only the biggest fans of body cloths can earn."

When entering the shop without an internet connection:

  • "Welcome to Jelly Fresh! Thanks for sho--BLUUUH! Oh no. You're offline. Sorry, but I'll need you to go to the lobby and connect to the internet again before shopping."

When entering the shop:

  • "Welcome to Jelly Fresh!"

When selecting a piece of clothing:

  • "Ready to buy?"

When selecting a piece of clothing that was already bought on the same day:

  • "Sorry! I'm out of stock on that item."

When selecting a piece of clothing that was already bought in Splatsville the same day:

  • "Ohhh, so sorry. That item is sold out."

When selecting a piece of already-owned clothing with max star power:

  • "Oh, darn. I'm afraid that the star power of that body cloth is already maxed out!"

When trying to trade in a piece of clothing that has the same main ability:

  • "Hmmm. I'd advise against doing that. Both of those body cloths contain the same primary abilities."

When buying a piece of clothing:

  • "Want to equip?"

After buying a piece of clothing:

  • "Thanks for shopping with me today! Remember -- you can use the Equip menu to change into your shiny new body cloths at any time."

After buying a piece of clothing during a Splatfest:

  • "BLUUUH. ExCUSE me! Sorry, but you can't change body cloths during a Splatfest. It's a bit of a faux pas."

When not having enough cash:

  • "BLUUUH. Oh, pardon me. I have an uncontrollable reaction like that when a customer is short on cash. Which you, uh, are..."

When a player below level 4 enters the shop:

  • "Ontzettend welkom in Beste Maatjes! Wat een... O! Eh... O jee... Ik, eh... Ik wil je heel graag helpen, maar dat mag ik niet. Ik mag alleen verse maatjes helpen... Je moet minstens niveau 4 hebben. Dan ben je hier meer dan welkom om onze mooie kleertjes te kopen! Maar nu moet je eerst wat aan je niveau werken. Misschien wat Grondoorlogen gaan doen in de lobby? Maar kom daarna wel weer op bezoek bij Kwalfred, oké? Ik kijk ernaar uit!"
(Incredibly welcome to Jelly Fresh! What a... Oh! Um... Oh gee... I, um... I'd really like to help you, but I'm not allowed to. I'm only allowed to help fresh buddies... You must have at least level 4. Then you're more than welcome to buy our beautiful clothes here! But now you must work on your level a bit first. Maybe go do some Turf Wars battles in the lobby? But do come visit Jelonzo again afterwards, okay? Looking forward to it!)

When a player of level 4 or up enters the shop for the first time:

  • "Ontzettend welkom in mijn winkeltje, Beste Maatjes! Wat een enorm plezier om je te ontmoeten! Ik ben Kwalfred, en ik verkoop hier kleding, om aan te trekken! Eh, maar dat snap je wel. Hopelijk vind je onze kleren leuk! Je bent zó vers, wat tof om zo'n coole klant in mijn winkel te hebben! Je wilt vast wel wat kopen, toch? Toch?"
(Incredibly welcome to my store, Jelly Fresh! What a tremendous pleasure to meet you! I am Jelonzo, and I sell clothing here, to put on! Um, but you get that. Hopefully you like our clothes! You're SO fresh, how awesome to have such a cool customer in my store! You'd probably like to buy something, right? Right?)
(You can put on our clothes, and then, um, you look different and such. But they also have abilities that can come in very handy on the battlefield! Super handy! If you have any questions about a clothing item, you can press . Hopefully we will have answers to everything!)

When a player of level 10 or up enters the shop for the first time:

  • "Ontzettend welkom in Beste Maatjes! Hopelijk zijn wij dat straks ook! O, je kon blijkbaar nog verser worden! Dat had ik niet gedacht! Nu kan ik je nog meer kleding aanbieden, wat ontzettend leuk! Hopelijk vind je deze kleren mooi!"
(Incredibly welcome to Jelly Fresh! Hopefully we will be best buddies soon! Oh, apparently you were able to get even fresher! I hadn't thought of that! Now I can offer you even more clothing, how incredibly nice! Hopefully you like these clothes!)

When a player of level 20 or up enters the shop for the first time:

  • "Ontzettend welkom in Beste Maatjes! Voor vriendschap en kleding op maat! Wauw, bezoek van zó'n verse vis! Dan kan ik je nog meer spulletjes laten zien die, eh, je kunt dragen en waar je in rond kunt lopen en zo."
(Incredibly welcome to Jelly Fresh! For friendship and tailored clothing! Wow, visit from SUCH a fresh fish! Then I can show you even more stuff that, um, you can wear and walk around in and such.)

When a player of level 30 or up enters the shop for the first time:

  • "Ontzettend welkom in Beste Maatjes! Hier lopen we altijd op de maat! WAUW! Ben jij zo vers als vers kan zijn?! En je wilt nog steeds bij mij shoppen? Wat geweldig! Kijk eens wat voor speciale spullen ik voor je heb! Wil je wat kopen? Ja toch?"
(Incredibly welcome to Jelly Fresh! Here we always keep to the beat! WOW! Are you as fresh as fresh can be?! And you still want to shop with me? How awesome! Check out what special stuff I have for you! Would you like to buy some? You would, right?)

When spending at least 100.000 cash for the first time:

  • "O! Ah! Wauw! Zo! Jeetje! Sorry, ik moet even op adem komen! Wat heb jij veel van onze spulletjes gekocht! Wat een reusachtig geweldige maat ben jij! Hier, accepteer alsjeblieft deze superexclusieve badge, voor de speciaalste klant aller tijden! Eh, hopelijk blijf je hier shoppen, hoor."
(Oh! Ah! Wow! Whoa! Jeez! Sorry, I need to catch my breath! What a lot of our stuff you bought! What a giant awesome buddy you are! Here, please accept this super-exclusive badge, for the most special customer of all time! Um, hopefully you'll continue to shop here, though.)

When spending at least 1.000.000 cash for the first time:

  • "O! Wat heb je ons winkeltje ontzettend goed geholpen met al je aankopen! Jij bent écht een maatje! Om je te eren hebben we wat leuks voor je. Een badge! Voor jou! De superklant! Eh... maar je mag nog wel langs blijven komen om dingen te kopen, oké? Alsjeblieft?"
(Oh! How incredibly well you have helped our little store with all your purchases! You are TRULY a buddy! To honor you, we have something nice for you. A badge! For you! The super customer! Um... but you may still continue to come by to buy things, okay? Please?)

When entering the shop without an internet connection:

  • "Eh, leuk dat je langskomt, maar... je bent niet online... Als je wat wilt kopen, dan moet je eerst even langs de lobby en dan verbinding maken met het internet. En dan terugkomen, hè?"
(Um, nice of you to come by, but.... you're not online... If you want to buy something, you have to pass by the lobby first and then connect to the internet. And then come back, 'kay?)

When entering the shop:

  • "Welkom, klant! Blij je te zien!"
(Welcome, customer! Glad to see you!)

When the shop stocks a piece of already-owned clothing for the first time:

  • "Weet je al van zeldzaamheid en van omruilen? Ik zal het voor de zekerheid maar even uitleggen, oké? Door een artikel zeldzamer te maken, kun je effectvakjes en ervaringspunten toevoegen. En door te ruilen krijg je een fris nieuw artikel, met een nieuw hoofdeffect. Zo kun je zelfs kleren kopen die je al hebt! Is dat niet leuk?"
(Do you know about star power and about exchanging yet? I'll explain just to be sure, okay? By boosting an item's star power, you can add ability slots and experience points. And by exchanging you get a fresh new item, with a new main ability. That way you can even buy clothes you already have! Isn't that fun?)

When selecting a piece of clothing:

  • "Die wil je kopen, toch?"
(You want to buy that one, right?)

When selecting a piece of already-owned clothing:

  • "Je hebt kleding waarvan je de zeldzaamheid kunt verhogen, of die je om kunt ruilen. Geïnteresseerd?"
(You have clothing that you can boost the star power of, or that you can exchange. Interested?)

When deciding whether to exchange a piece of clothing:

  • "O! Ik moet je waarschuwen! Deze kleding verliest wel zijn zeldzaamheid en extra effecten. Toch doen?"
(Oh! I have to warn you! This piece of clothing does lose its star power and secondary abilities. Do it anyway?)

When trying to trade in a piece of clothing that has the same main ability:

  • "BLOEP! Die kleren hebben allebei hetzelfde hoofdeffect. Ik wil je wel graag helpen, maar hierbij heeft dat niet zo veel zin."
(BLOOP! Those clothes both have the same main ability. I'd like to help you, but in this case it doesn't make that much sense.)

When selecting a piece of already-owned clothing with max star power:

  • "Deze kleren zijn al zo zeldzaam, die kun je niet meer verbeteren! Sorry, misschien ben je soms te vers voor ons..."
(These clothes already have such a high star power, you can't boost them anymore! Sorry, maybe you are just too fresh for us...)

When selecting a piece of already-bought clothing on the same day:

  • "Bloep! Het spijt me, ik heb dit artikel schijnbaar niet snel genoeg aangevuld en nu is het uitverkocht..."
(Bloop! I'm sorry, I seem to have not restocked this item soon enough and now it's sold out...)

When selecting a piece of already-bought clothing on the same day in Splatsville:

  • "Bloep! Dat hebben we niet meer, maar wil je misschien iets anders kopen?"
(Bloop! We no longer have that one, but maybe you would like to buy something else?)

When buying a piece of clothing:

  • "Meteen dragen?"
(Wear immediately?)

After buying a piece of clothing:

  • "O, een aankoop! Wat fijn! Bedankt! Je weet dat je kleren kunt aantrekken in het menu UITRUSTING, toch? Ja, wist je vast al, sorry..."
(Oh, a purchase! How nice! Thanks! You know you can put clothes on in the menu GEAR, right? Yes, I'm sure you already knew, sorry...)

After buying a piece of clothing during a Splatfest:

  • "Bloep! Eh, je weet dat ik je heel graag wil helpen, maar tijdens een Splatfest kun je geen andere kleding aandoen."
(Um, you know I'd really like to help you, but during a Splatfest you're not allowed to put on other clothing.)

When not having enough cash:

  • "Bloep! Sorry, dat ging vanzelf. Je hebt helaas niet genoeg geld bij je, zo te zien."
(Bloop! Sorry, that happened involuntarily. Unfortunately, you don't have enough money on you, by the looks of it.)

Trivia

  • Jelonzo's name comes from the word "jelly," as he is a jellyfish.
  • Jelonzo's Japanese name is "Echizen" and Jelfonzo's Japanese name is "Bizen"; both are names of historic provinces of Japan.
  • When switching to Jelly Fresh from another shop, Jelonzo can be seen with his tentacle stretched towards the rack of shirts on the back wall for an instant. This is possibly a protective gesture, as the shirts are shaken up when switching between shops.
  • None of the shirts Jelonzo wears are available to the player as gear.
  • Until Wave 1 of the Splatoon 3: Expansion Pass, Jelonzo was the only shopkeeper in Splatoon that did not return in later games in the Splatoon series. Before then, his only form of return or cameo was that of being mentioned by the Squid Sisters in Splatoon 2.
  • In a developer interview, it was revealed that Jelfonzo is Jelonzo's child by asexual reproduction.[5]
