Check it out! We've identified this sea anemone gal as the clerk who works at the headgear shop. We hear that she's pretty shy and mostly keeps to herself, which sort of makes you wonder why she'd even want a job in the service industry. Oh, and see that little fish dude hanging out in her hair? He apparently talks tough but never does anything on his own. Maybe these two actually have a lot in common?

Annie and Moe are characters in the Splatoon series. They are, respectively, a sea anemone and a clownfish who jointly operate the headgear shop Cooler Heads in Splatoon and Splatoon 3. Additionally, in Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3, Annie runs the SplatNet Gear Shop in SplatNet 2 and SplatNet 3, respectively.

Appearance

Annie

Annie has pink tentacles with pastel green tips that serve as her hair and house Moe. Her skin is a pale beige color similar to shopkeepers like Sheldon and Flow. She has cyan eyes with hot pink pupils and baby blue sclera, along with purple eyelids and eyelashes. Annie wears a shiny indigo star-shaped accessory in her hair and black glasses. She has magenta headphones around her neck and an unzipped green hoodie emblazoned with magenta and aqua-blue squids. Annie also wears a black dress, a dark green apron, orange tights with black squids on them, and black biker boots. The corner of her apron is adorned with two small pins: a skull and a yellow squid.

In Splatoon 3, Annie's tentacles are put into 2 split colors, with one side being pastel pink (similar to her original Splatoon colors) and the other being pastel purple. Additionally, the tips of her tentacles are now white instead of the prior green. Annie wears a black biker hat and a partially unzipped black hoodie with purple and blue corals. The same pins from her prior outfit are now placed at the corner of her hoodie. Underneath, she wears the same black dress and dark green apron as in Splatoon. She wears fishnet stockings and black boots. Annie also wears round silver glasses on her face.

Moe

Moe is orange with white stripes and bulging eyes. According to Splatoon Base, he looks well-fed due to Annie giving him snacks.[2]

Personality and traits

Annie

Annie has a shy personality, being extremely reserved and constantly ruminating. When speaking, she usually trails off after some time, gradually getting quieter. She experiences difficulty greeting customers, and according to Callie and Marie in the Squid Sisters Stories, she moved online to the SplatNet 2 shop because she got flustered too easily.[3] She also sometimes helps Sheldon with decorating weapons at Ammo Knights.[3][4] Despite her shyness, she has an exciting writing style, in addition to being a great artist.[5] She is prone to having outbursts from time to time, though this is never seen in-game.[5] She also likes metal music[4], and got into gothic metal sometime before Splatoon 3, which influenced her outfit in that game.[6]

Annie's version of DJ Lee Fish's song Lookin' Fresh has louder treble, meaning emphasized vocals and minimal percussion, giving it a weaker sound overall. This is a reflection of her shy, detached personality, as well as the fact that she sells gear for the top part of the buyer's body, hence the emphasis on the treble.

Moe

Moe acts hostile towards the player, insulting them at every single opportunity. Though he acts tough, he stubbornly refuses to leave Annie's head and never does anything on his own.[7][1] This is partially represented by Annie always speaking first, with Moe popping up afterwards with a smart remark.

History

Splatoon

In Splatoon, Annie and Moe jointly serve as the shopkeepers of Cooler Heads, located in Inkopolis Plaza's Booyah Base. As the name of the shop suggests, they sell all manners of headgear.

Before Splatoon 2

Annie is mentioned in the Squid Sisters Stories as having "given retail the old college try", implying she no longer is employed at Cooler Heads as well as foreshadowing her role in Splatoon 2 running the SplatNet Gear Shop.

Splatoon 2

Annie is never directly seen in Splatoon 2, but now runs the SplatNet Gear Shop, offering a variety of gear with alternate main abilities and partnering with Murch to fulfill orders for customers.

Additionally, Annie and Moe were on Team Chaos for the Chaos vs. Order Splatfest, with Annie reasoning that it matches the eccentric gear abilities she sells in her online shop.[8]

Splatoon 3

After being mostly absent in Splatoon 2, Annie and Moe return in the Splatoon 3: Expansion Pass, once again being found employed at Cooler Heads. Annie is also a rival in Tableturf Battle, being automatically unlocked as a possible opponent upon purchase of the Expansion Pass.

Annie also continues her role of operating the SplatNet Gear Shop.

And here are two familiar faces - Annie and Moe from Cooler Heads, the Inkopolis headgear shop! Annie has leaned into her love of gothic metal and changed her style. She also moonlights as a sysop for SplatNet and adds decals to weapons on the side. As for Moe? Still a clown fish.

Trivia

Annie

  • It is possible that Annie has a romantic interest in Sheldon. However, this possibility is only mentioned in Chapter 4 of the Squid Sisters Stories when Callie blurts out in excitement, "Do you think Annie and Sheldon...?!" to which Marie responds, smiling, "No way, not a chance."[3]
    • In the same chapter, according to Crusty Sean, Annie was also looking for a new gig and had kept herself busy decorating weapons at Ammo Knights. The more she did it, the more she felt a detail-oriented part-time job suited her perfectly. This is probably what inspired her to start the online retail service, SplatNet Gear Shop.
  • Annie seems to be slightly skeptical of Spyke, as seen in the Splatoon 2 relationship chart, in which she states "He seems dangerous..." [10] Additionally, in Inkopolis Plaza, the alleyway that Spyke inhabits is directly opposite Cooler Heads, Annie's shop. This connection could be a reference to sea urchins and sea anemones being natural enemies.

Moe

  • Curiously, Moe is one of the few speaking characters in the Splatoon series to not seem to have changed significantly in appearance towards a more humanoid form compared to the real-world counterpart of their species, other examples of this being Craymond and Nails.
  • Moe's appearance differs significantly from the only other known clownfish, Harmony's companion, and is the only example of its species that is shown to speak. In addition, unlike Harmony's clownfish, the specific species of Moe is not known.

Etymology

Annie and Moe's names together are a pun on the word "anemone". Moe's name may also be referencing Nemo from Finding Nemo, who is also a clownfish.
