Nintendo Co., Ltd. (任天堂株式会社 Nintendō Kabushiki gaisha?) is a Japanese multinational consumer electronics company headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. Nintendo is the world's largest video game company by revenue. Founded on 23 September 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi, it originally produced handmade hanafuda playing cards. By 1963, the company had tried several small niche businesses, such as cab services and love hotels.
Abandoning previous ventures in favor of toys in the 1960s, Nintendo then developed into a video game company in the 1970s, ultimately becoming one of the most influential in the industry and Japan's third most valuable listed company with a market value of over US$85 billion. Nintendo of America is also the majority owner of the Seattle Mariners Major League Baseball team.
The name Nintendo can be roughly translated from Japanese to English as "leave luck to heaven." As of 31 March 2016, Nintendo reports historically cumulative sales of over 693.18 million hardware units and 4.41 billion software units.[1]
Some of Nintendo's most famous franchises include Mario, Zelda and Metroid. Nintendo published Splatoon and controls Splatoon's servers and DLC unlocks. Nintendo occasionally creates custom Splatoon servers accessible only by Nintendo employees for livestreams or promotional material. A custom Regular Battle (Turf War) server with only the Moray Towers stage (unavailable to the public at that time) was created for the Nintendo Treehouse: Live with Splatoon Tower Control livestream. Nintendo frequently does livestreams through its Nintendo Direct service.
On 11 July 2015, Nintendo's fourth president, Satoru Iwata, died of a tumor inside of his bile duct. He had been fighting this ailment for a bit over two years, but it eventually overcame him, ending his glorious career. [2] On 14 September 2015, Nintendo announced Tatsumi Kimishima to be the new president of Nintendo of Japan, replacing Satoru Iwata. [3]
