The Nintendo Switch 2 is a Nintendo console and the successor to the Nintendo Switch. After having been first mentioned by Nintendo on 7 May 2024 as simply the "successor to Nintendo Switch",[2] it was officially announced with its proper name via Nintendo's social media channels on 16 January 2025, alongside a website[3] and trailer[4] showcasing various aspects of the console, as well as a new game in the Mario Kart series, titled Mario Kart World.[5][6]

A Nintendo Switch 2-focused Nintendo Direct was also announced for 2 April 2025,[7] as well as physical "Nintendo Switch 2 Experience" events to be held in the following months.[8][9] It was released on 5 June 2025.

Almost all first-party Nintendo games, including Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3, are backward compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2. However, Splatoon 3 exhibited a couple of glitches when run on the new console, which required fixing with the version 10.0.0 update; the same update also improved visuals and performance. Splatoon Raiders will be the first game in the series to be developed exclusively for the console.

Features

The Nintendo Switch 2 is broadly similar to its predecessor and features all its existing play modes: TV mode, tabletop mode, and handheld mode.

New additions include:

  • Redesigned Joy-Con controllers, called the Joy-Con 2.[3][4]. They are larger to accommodate the larger console screen and insert directly into the sides of the console rather than using rails like the original Switch, with a redesigned release mechanism. They also feature altered button sizes, particularly for the and buttons, as well as a new C button used to activate GameChat on the Nintendo Switch 2, located on the Joy-Con 2 (R), underneath the button. The Joy-Con Grip also returns with a new form factor to accommodate the lack of rails.
  • Several new features[3][4] on the console itself: a wider stand similar to that of the Nintendo Switch - OLED Model is included, and the console now features a second USB-C port on its top in addition to the bottom.
  • Inherent backwards compatibility[3][4][10] with existing physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, as well as the Nintendo Switch Online service. Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3 are compatible but certain games are partially or wholly incompatible, as listed in documents on the website.[11]

Notes

  1. In Japan there will be two versions of the system available, the Multi-Language System, and the Japanese-Language System (Japan only), which can only have its system language set to Japanese, and only supports Japanese Nintendo Accounts.[1]
