This article is about the stage preview mode. For the Ability, see Recon.

Recon is a single player mode that allows players to explore a stage of their choice, from the current rotation. It can be accessed from the Battle Lobby by pressing Y when selecting either the Regular Battle or Ranked Battle options.

Use

This is useful to find new vantage points, turf, or just to try out a new map.

It functions exactly like the gamemode from which it was selected with a few exceptions:

  • There is no one on the opposing team and you are the only member of your team.
  • You cannot end a ranked mode early by meeting the knockout criteria.
    • In Splat Zones, players can cover the zones with Ink when the zone is captured, or completely covered in ink, but there is no count down.
    • In Tower Control, Players can ride the Tower to the opposing side without any trouble, but when the tower gets to the winning area, the player stays in the map and the music stops.
      • Since there are no players to go against, the Tower will never get any closer to the players side of the map, unless if the tower is going back to the center of the map.
    • In Rainmaker, if the player brings the Rainmaker to the hill or slant on the opposing side, instead of placing the Rainmaker on it, the Inkling will remain holding the Rainmaker.
      • There is a way to get the opposing ink laying in the map, Touching The Shield repeatedly will harm the Inkling. Plus, Carrying the Rainmaker for too long will also Splat the Inkling.
    • In Clam Blitz, the player can open the basket and throw clams but are not counted for.
  • You can end any mode early by pressing Plus through a pause menu, which itself is impossible in multiplayer.
  • The music themes that play in an online battle do not play.

Trivia

  • Since there is no music in recon mode, different sounds can be heard such as cars whizzing past in Blackbelly Skatepark or the sounds of jellyfish testing video games in Ancho-V Games.
  • The player is always on team Alpha,
    • In Saltspray Rig, the player will only start at the right side of the map.
    • In Splatoon 2, this is more visible since the decor for stages is not symmetrical (usually, some props are replaced by different, same-sized props on the other side). For example, in Shellendorf Institute, the player will always start on the side of the entrance and not the side of the gift shop.
  • Due to the mode being single player, the player can explore the stage without any lag and have much smoother movement with their Inkling.
  • If a player chooses Recon mode during a Splatfest, the stage will be able to be viewed at night; although this is only possible in Splatoon 2 due to the lack of future Splatfest events in Splatoon.
  • In Multiplayer, the score of Ink covered is counted when a match has ended naturally, but while in recon mode, the Ink Turfed score of the main weapon is not updated after leaving recon mode.
