Ability Points Shown in SplatNet 3

A recent tweet with screenshots of the SplatNet 3 app revealed that ability points are shown in the app! It says each main ability is worth 1.0, and each sub is worth 0.3.

This article should probably be reworked to use the smaller numbers. That might be a can of worms, though, because of User:Heddy's charts. Gomtuu (talk) 13:09, 5 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As I was writing this, SplatoonNA tweeted about it too. Although the explanation is different (it says subs are worth 30% instead of 0.3), you can still see from the totals that mains are worth 1.0, not 10. Gomtuu (talk) 13:23, 5 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This is nothing new from Nintendo, it's the same as what was said years ago in the Nintendo Switch news feed. They are once again confirming an ability slot's value relative to each other, but revealing nothing about any internal systems. Heddy (talk) 23:05, 8 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's true. I just thought it would be nice if the numbers in the wiki matched the ones displayed in the app. If players use the app on an ongoing basis, they'll be dealing with the smaller numbers regularly. And if the wiki were to adopt the smaller numbers, then players wouldn't have to convert in their heads when going back and forth between the app and the wiki. Not that it's hard to multiply or divide by ten, but you know... Gomtuu (talk) 23:30, 8 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would wait to see if the wiki's sources (ability calculator websites, Lean's ability calculation info) change before changing the wiki.
And regardless of what the number is, most explanations of abilities should continue to use language that can be understood by anyone ("one primary ability and two secondary abilities are equivalent to 1.6 primary abilities") rather than just replacing every mention with something like "1.6". Parts of the wiki that talk about abilities in terms of number of primaries and secondaries but not in terms of ability points should probably not be changed, as ability points are the more abstract and complicated way of quantifying abilities that most people will not be familiar with, and changing the number of ability points to a smaller number wouldn't change that.
I would also like to know how ability power is described by manuals or in-game, to see if it's consistent with the app.
In summary, before making changes I think we should wait for people to look at the game's internal systems and for people to come up with new ability calculation formulas (which might be as simple as adding a division by 10 somewhere in the formula).
