Tongue Trivia

I am new to making edits/comments, so please let me know if I'm doing something wrong.

The trivia piece on Frye's tongue being the first in-game appearance of an inkling's tongue is possibly inaccurate, as Pearl's can be seen in the end cutscene for Octo Expansion during her killer wail special. Would this warrant a change to Frye's and/or Pearl's page?

Thank you! Ohimsorry (talk) 08:52, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Of course, as long as you are 100% sure it was the case. Miss Delibirda (talk) 13:40, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Source for fact?

I tried looking online for a source to back up on the trivia fact "The reason for Frye's noticeably large forehead may be due to large foreheads being a sign of beauty in Indian culture", but I cannot find a reliable source to back it up. I saw a few twitter posts saying claiming this, along with one article, but there were also posts that claimed the opposite, and the article sourced Quora for its fact. Could the person who added the fact give the source they found this fact from? Kenderman123 (talk) 17:14, 6 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I believe it is from this video from Caitlin Koi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93QC9E32_mE Woomy? (talk) signature signature 19:02, 6 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Looking through the script and sources for this, there's no source for this myth. I'd say this trivia should be removed if no one can find a reliable source for it, since if false, it serves to do little more than spreading misinformation. It'd be different if there were an official acknowledgement, since it wouldn't be out of the question for a trait to be based on a misconception.

Vampire Squid?

Many people have found the similarities between Frye's design and the appearance of vampire squid (large head, purple glowing fingers and toes) and otherwise vampire-like features (long fangs and ears). Could this be reasonable to add to her page or do you think it's speculation? Spleet (talk) 11:27, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There are several problems with that theory; 1. Vampire squid are not squid 2. The devs don't base the Inklings on a specific species 3. Vampire squid do not have ink 4. They are not called vampire squid in Japanese. Miss Delibirda (talk) 11:29, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You're right. However, vampire squid do produce a substitute" for ink- a bioluminescent mucus that glows in a bluish color. That may be the reason Frye is the only Inkling to have glowing fingers. Of course, this is all speculation! Thank you for the answers. Spleet (talk) 08:33, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If it's speculation, it doesn't go there. Miss Delibirda (talk) 08:34, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Broken citation

Frye#cite note-Leanny GitHub-9 leads to a 404. Was the file moved, or simply taken down? It'd be better to replace it with a functional link than to simply delete it, though. Same issue is present on the pages for Shiver and Big Man.

Full Name Confirmed? (Shared with Shiver)

Since we have confirmed the localized family name of all three from family crest stickers, we can assume the Deep Cut girls' full name are Frye Onaga and Shiver Hohojiro, based on the Japanese names. Should we mention it somewhere? (Big Man shouldn't be the case, as マンタロー is his nickname in Japanese and Big Man also sounds like so.) Mslabo102 (talk) 09:04, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

i think we should add it like we did for Marina, in the description & etymology Sanei Splatoon 2 plush Pearl.jpgkris(talk)Sanei Splatoon 2 plush Marina.jpg 09:22, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"explicit soundbite"- is this neccessary?

Do we really need the trivia about Frye's soundbite sounding similar to an english expletive? It's exclusively a fandom joke and not at all conf. Tentiquills (talk) 14:50, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Maybe in the Community Glossary? It is in trivia which is for trivial fun facts; so it fits in either places. -Random 15:06, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Fandom stuff isn't notable as trivia, but it doesn't fit on the glossary either, since it's more of a concept than a word. Arceusgjengen (talk) 15:09, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Wait, we seem to have non-glossary stuff there too. Nevermind that. Arceusgjengen (talk) 15:11, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Isn't the glossary entirely for unofficial fandom definitions and what not? In the memes section it could probably fit since it's a popular joke in the community any way. Joe is just a name and it found it's way into the glossary. -Random 15:12, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Frye's pronouns

Do we know Frye's pronouns? In Smallusk's notes, they seem to be It/Its (and it's not just they call everybody it/its, because the other characters have other pronouns). Should we change the pronouns on the page to be It/Its when referring to her?

SoupChickn (talk) 00:27, 15 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

No, Frye is always referred to as "she" except in her Palette's notes. I have no idea why, though. I do think this should be mentioned, but as a mistake rather than as a fact - I know that in the French version, her Palette uses a male pronoun in place of "it" because of this... Anemoia Anemoia Sig.png [Talk!] 00:34, 15 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think 'it' may be used there because it's in reference to her soul, not necessarily Frye herself. But yeah, there's a litany of instances of Frye being referred to as 'she/her' and (seemingly) only this one instance of 'it', so I think it would be presumptive to say it's a clear indicator of changed pronouns. So her 'soul' is playing the flute? That's confusing but it would be better than a translation error. Just in case though I grabbed the original Japanese line and am gonna compare it to other languages. Anemoia Anemoia Sig.png [Talk!] 00:44, 15 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is pretty much obvious to be a mistranslation (Splatoon's American translation team has been noted to make a lot of errors, even way worse than this). The tidbit could anyway be noted into Trivia, as it is official media, but it's better to wait for someone who is fluent in Japanese to confirm it is a mistranslation (or somebody who happens to know anyone from the translation team personally, to ask why this particular pronoun was chosen in English).
