Is this template needed?

What exactly is the use of this template? As far as i'm aware, anyone can move pages, so what is the reason for a notice? Is it to prepare for the move? I can see pages needed to be merged together but to just change the name of pages? Is this template really needed? If people can request moves, can't they just move it themselves? -Random 04:34, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

This template is used to indicate that a page or section's move is actively being discussed or worked on; think of it as a maintenance sign on a (possibly messy) road. Anyone can move pages, yes, but it's more courteous to perform large moves only after discussion has taken place, and this template helps indicate that such discussion is ongoing. Additionally, the Move template can be used to request moves for pages that you don't have permission to move, similar to the delete template. EminenceTalk 02:42, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

On a somewhat related note, although this is meant to be the template for article renames, I've noticed it also being used for merges and splits. Shouldn't those have separate templates to avoid confusion? Hewer (talk · contributions) 15:23, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
