The Tri-Stringer was initially shown in the announcement trailer for Splatoon 3 on 17 February 2021.[1] Its name was revealed on 22 April 2022.[2]

Description

The Tri-Stringer resembles a bow and arrow or a miniature ballista, but made out of parts of a fishing rod, including a reel and string. When the Tri-Stringer is fired, it launches three vertical projectiles of ink while jumping. The Tri-Stringer can shoot horizontally, but only when standing, similar to the roller. The Tri-Stringer is also able to charge up its shot before firing, similar to chargers, and allows the wielder to quickly strafe back and forth in humanoid form while holding a charge, much like a splatling. It is also seen with a charge animation similar to a charger's. To fire the weapon, the user pulls back on the string, which changes color depending on the user's ink, and then lets go of it after a short period. [3] Depending if the weapon has been charged, the Tri-Stringer will shoot one to three projectiles that resemble dynamite if charged, which will explode after a few seconds. The ink tanks on the weapon and the bowstring seem to light up for a short period after being fired. It seems as if all three “arrows” hit an opponent, it splats instantly. The middle projectile of a fully-charged Tri-Stringer shot will stick to any surface it hits for just under a second, appearing as a small lump of ink that gradually glows brighter, and will then explode dealing AOE damage and inking in a short range. Charging for a short time will cause the projectiles to be fired in widespread, while a longer charge will cause them to be fired more closely together.

Sheldon's Introduction

I am so excited to share this new weapon tech with you. Behold the Tri-Stringer - a stringer-type weapon that fires in three directions at once! Press while standing or running, and the ink will fire horizontally. Press while jumping for a shot that's concentrated vertically. The flexibility is unparalleled! And that's not even the best part. You can hold down to charge a shot! The ink will fly farther AND explode if it hits a wall or the floor. I could go on all day about stringers, but I should mention that the Toxic Mist sub is great for keeping enemies at bay, or at least slowing them down. And for enemies that you can't even reach with a charged shot, you've got the Killer Wail 5.1 with supersonic range at your disposal. I hope you'll give one of the new stringers a try!

Behold! We've captured footage of a stringer type weapon. This is the Tri-Stringer, which can fire in three directions simultaneously and unleash charged shots that briefly freeze before exploding. Our lab is hoping to obtain one of these for further play research.
