The Wii Classic Controller is a controller for the Wii that can only be used in the Battle Dojo mode in Splatoon. Released alongside the Wii in 2006, it later gained an updated revision called the Wii Classic Controller Pro in 2009.

Description

The Wii Classic Controller is an optional accessory for the Wii and can be also used by the Wii U that provides a more traditional alternative to the Wii Remote. Compared to the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, it includes an additional analog stick and ZL and ZR buttons. It must be connected to a Wii Remote to be used. It loosely resembles a Super Famicom or Super Nintendo Entertainment System controller.

The Wii Classic Controller Pro differs from the original by having two large grips, and ZL and ZR are bigger, digital, and moved behind L and R. Additionally, Left Stick and Right Stick are spaced apart further horizontally and the wire is moved to the top of the controller. It must also be connected to a Wii Remote to be used.

Battle Dojo

In the Battle Dojo, one player can use the Wii Classic Controller to play on the TV, to pop as many balloons as they can, against their opponent using the Wii U GamePad. This is the only functionality available for this controller.

Features

Note that some icons do not match up as they are from the Wii U GamePad.

  • Left Stick: Used primarily to move the player's Inkling forward, backward, left, and right.
  • Right Stick: Used for aiming, and controls which direction the player looks. Also used for menus, such as the weapon select and pause screen.
  • L: Allows players to transform into squids. In this form, Inklings can move faster through their own ink and jump farther.
  • R: Allows players to splatter ink using their weapon.
  • ZR: Allows players to use their sub weapon.
  • X: Causes the player's Inkling to jump.
  • Y: Resets the camera angle, allowing for quick corrections.
  • A: Used in menus to select specific actions and options.
  • B: Used to deselect a chosen weapon in the weapon select screen.
  • D-Pad: Can be used in Battle Dojo menus like Left Stick.
  • Plus: Used to pause and resume in in a Battle Dojo match, and adjust the controls on the weapon select screen.

The Wii Classic Controller Pro's controls are closer to that of the Wii U GamePad. Changes compared to the original model are as follows:

  • ZL: Allows players to transform into squids.
  • ZR: Allows players to use their weapon.
  • R: Allows players to use their sub weapon.

Trivia

A Wii U Pro Controller is shown here, but a Wii Classic Controller can also be used.
  • Battle Dojo matches can be played with a combination of a Wii Classic Controller and a Wii Remote Plus (or Wii Remote with Wii MotionPlus), which is hinted at in Sunken Scroll 26. This allows the player using the Classic Controller to have motion controls. To perform this, the player must hold down on the D-Pad, hold down B, and press ZL and ZR as described on the Splatoon Tumblr, Squid Research Lab.
  • The original model is the only controller in Splatoon that does not use ZL to turn into a squid, ZR to shoot and R to use sub weapons, due to the unique placement of the triggers, which were moved to a more traditional place for the Wii Classic Controller Pro.
