Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer is a sandbox game for the Nintendo 3DS that released in 2015. It is a spin-off in the Animal Crossing series wherein players design homes for Villagers clients. The game is based on Animal Crossing: New Leaf, reusing most of its assets and Villagers.
amiibo compatibility in the Animal Crossing series was first introduced in Happy Home Designer, with similar features later implemented into New Leaf via the major Welcome amiibo update in 2016.[1] No Splatoon series amiibo are compatible with this game. It sold 3.51 million copies, making it approximately the twentieth-best-selling Nintendo 3DS game.[2]
Description
In Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, the player is an employee at Nook's Homes, designing homes for clients or facilities. Unlike standard Animal Crossing games, this game lacks the real-time clock feature as well as the typical socialization, collection and multiplayer gameplay systems. Players progress via an in-game day-night cycle; players may (re)design one house per day, after which nighttime commences and the game must be saved to progress.
Each time the player takes on a villager as a new client, new sets of furniture, clothing and house components are unlocked permanently; these sets of items are themed after each villager.
References to Splatoon

While there is no direct crossover with Splatoon, Octavian's house references both Splatoon and its Octo Valley single-player campaign.
Octavian's default house exterior design features a multicolor paint-splatter design reminiscent of ink. His thought bubble reads "I want a place that shows my mastery over squid",[1] while his vision for his home design is "a squid-showdown citadel", referencing the rivalry between Inklings and Octarians introduced in Splatoon's Octo Valley mode. His three required items are a squid chair, an octopus chair and a manhole cover; the latter references the manhole used by Cap'n Cuttlefish.
Most of the furniture that players unlock through Octavian are sport and marine life themed, most notably featuring a flying saucer, DJ's turntable, referencing the UFOs used by Octarians and DJ Octavio. Unlocked clothing includes the superhero mask and samurai helmet, referencing the similar-looking natural eye masks on Inklings and DJ Octavio's helmet. Octavian shares some similarities with DJ Octavio as a red octopus with a cranky personality.
