Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo is an updated version of the 2012 Nintendo 3DS title Animal Crossing: New Leaf. The update was released worldwide on 2 November 2016 via the Nintendo eShop as a free digital download. The update has since been included on physical game copies released on 23 November 2016 in Japan, 24 November 2016 in Australia, 25 November 2016 in Europe, and 2 December 2016 in North America. Both versions of the game have sold a combined 13.06 million copies, making it the sixth-best-selling Nintendo 3DS game.[2]

The extended version's main addition is the inclusion of amiibo support, which added new content for the game, including references and allusions to Splatoon among other first-party Nintendo games.

Description

Animal Crossing: New Leaf is a social simulation game featuring a real time clock and calendar progression system wherein players assume the role of the mayor of a small town and socialize with animal neighbor characters called "villagers". It is the fifth entry in the Animal Crossing series. The game features an extensive catalog of furniture and clothing items to collect with which to customize one's player character and house with.

There are 333 villagers in the game total.[3] Each villager has a set of furniture and clothing items that are associated with them, a unique catchphrase and birthday. They have a pre-set gender, species and personality types, which determines how their interactions with other villagers and the player will play out. Pre-set hobbies, goals and skills also determine villager behavior. Players are able to befriend villagers over time; at maximum friendship, villagers will gift the player with a framed photo of themself, which lists their favorite saying.

amiibo functionality

amiibo functionality was added in the Welcome amiibo update via the special character Wisp. He can be interacted with via a magic lamp furniture item.

Via talking to Wisp then scanning a compatible amiibo card or figure, he transforms, temporarily mimicking a character associated with that amiibo. Players are then given the option to either receive a random item related to that villager or invite them to the campground. Entering their van on the campground, players can interact with the character, purchase their associated items from a complete catalog and/or invite them to live in the town.

Splatoon-themed villagers

Among the returning villagers from previous Animal Crossing titles, new ones were introduced as well as part of crossovers with other video game series or real-life companies and brands. Scanning amiibo from the Splatoon series summons one of the three Splatoon-themed villagers:

Inkwell

Inkwell inside a house
A Splatoon superfan, Inkwell's decided to leave his past behind and create a new identity as a squid. It'd be going better if his eight legs weren't so obvious.
RV description of Inkwell[4]

Inkwell is a jock octopus villager alluding to an Inkling's squid-form. His June 2 birthday references the release date for Ranked Battle in Splatoon, which was 2 June 2015. His RV description states he is trying to live as a squid instead of an octopus, alluding to the rivalry between Inklings and Octolings that was prevalent in Splatoon and Splatoon 2's story.

His catchphrase is "splat", a commonly used word in the Splatoon series while his favorite saying is "A sucker is born every minute.", with "sucker" being a pun on squid and octopus suckers.[4]

Inkwell's design draws inspiration from Inklings' squid form. He is an orange octopus, mimicking the use of orange as one of the trademark promotional ink colors used in Splatoon, as well as the main color associated with Ranked Battle. He adorns dark orange spots on the back of his head and tentacles, while the underside of his tentacles are white. His eyes are positioned close together, creating the illusion of a single large eye with two pupils. He has a prominent brow and the underside of his eyes features a bold, dark outline. He wears the Black Anchor Tee, which is based on the clothing item of the same name from Splatoon.

Jock villagers enjoy sport and exercising, tend to speak with loud, shouting voices, use slang and are sometimes overbearing with their interests. Those characteristics strongly parallel the Inkling culture and overall theming of the Splatoon series. Inkwell gets along with Cece and Viché as well as other peppy and normal villagers.[5]

Inkwell's "defending territory" skill is a reference to Splatoon's territoriality themed gameplay, exemplified in the regular battle mode Turf War and ranked mode Splat Zones. His goal being "squid" along with his RV description stating he is trying to live as a squid appear to humorously parody and parallel Octoling traits. Similar to Cece and Viché, his favorite style is sporty.[4]

The items in Inkwell's house and RV allude to the setting and battle modes in Splatoon. The flooring alludes to Urchin Underpass, one of the game's stages. His furniture features a spawn point, the tower from Tower Control, Squid Bumpers, the Tentatek Splattershot and a Super Sea Snail as well as head pieces from Splatoon.

Cece

Cece inside a house
Cece and her sister Viché are big fans of the Squid Sisters. Cece takes cosplaying her half of the duo so seriously, she only responds to the name Callie.
— RV description of Cece[6]

Cece is the younger[6] of two sisters alluding to the Squid Sisters. She is a peppy squirrel resembling Callie, whom she cosplays as.

Her birthday is on May 28, referencing the Japanese release date for Splatoon, 28 May 2015. Her catchphrase is "stay fresh", similar to the Squid Sisters' "Staaaay fresh!" catchphrase. Her favorite saying is "Too heads are better than one!", with the misspelling corrected in Viché's saying, paralleling how Marie often provides follow-up remarks to Callie's comments and occasionally corrects her in banter during Inkopolis News.

Cece's color scheme features magenta, purple, and black as the main tones. Her fur is mostly light purple, with darker purple for her hair. The insides of her ears and her nose are light blue. Her brown-golden eyes are accented with bold black outlines, mimicking Callie's eyes and masquerade, but with magenta eyelids instead of black ones. She also has black eyebrows and a black mole under her left eye. Cece wears the same clothes as Callie by wearing the Callie shirt while hiving similar tights and shoes. She wears a headpiece resembling Callie's.

As a peppy villager, Cece parallels many of Callie's traits. She will always be in a good mood and easily gets along with other villagers and the player. In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, peppy villagers speak with cheerful, lively tones; their general excitement, wild imaginations, short attention spans and forgetfulness also closely align with Callie's personality. As such, Cece will get along with her normal villagers, like her sister Viché, and might do activities with jocks like Inkwell.[7]

Her "cosplay" skill references her mimicking Callie while her "stylist" goal may reference Splatoon's general focus on fashion through clothing. Her favorite style of clothing being sporty is also a nod to the gear styles in the Splatoon series.[6]

The items in Cece's house and RV allude to the Inkopolis News Studio, featuring the same furniture as well as a sign for Splatfests. The music played inside is Bubblegum K.K., titled "Idol" in Japanese; the song is based on Japanese idol culture and J-pop, which the Squid Sisters are inspired from. The cover of that song features the rabbit sisters Francine and Chrissy who have similar styles to Cece and Viché in mirroring each other.

Viché

Viché inside a house
Viché and her sister love traveling to different conventions to show off their latest cosplay—now featuring Marie of the Squid Sisters.
— RV description of Viché[8]

Viché is the older[8] of two sisters alluding to the Squid Sisters. She is a normal squirrel resembling Marie, whom she cosplays as.

Her birthday is on July 7, referencing the release date of the Callie Callie and Marie Marie amiibo on 7 July 2016. Her catchphrase is "splatastic", a commonly used term in Splatoon. Her favorite saying is "TWO heads are better than one!"; it is a correction of Cece's saying.

Viché's color scheme is centered around tones of green, white, and black. Her fur is mostly light green, while her hair is a pale whitish hue. The insides of her ears are yellow-green, and her nose is lime green. Her brown-golden eyes are accented with bold black outlines, mimicking Marie's eyes and masquerade, but with yellow-green eyelids instead of black ones. She also has gray eyebrows and a black mole under her right eye. Viché wears the same clothes as Marie by wearing the Marie shirt while hiving similar tights and shoes. She wears a headpiece resembling Marie's.

Viché's normal personality type loosely mimics Marie's. Normal villagers are very sensitive and kind;[9] Viché is more grounded or realistic in comparison to Cece, similar to how Marie tends to be more reasonable compared to Callie.

Like Cece, Viché has the "cosplay" skill, referencing her mimicking Marie while her "illustrator" goal may be a reference to the paint focused gameplay in the Splatoon series. Similar to Cece, her favorite style is sporty.[8]

The items and music in Viché's house and RV are the same as Cece's with differently colored chairs, featuring green arrows instead of magenta.

Splatoon-themed designs

Players are able to create designs, which are used for customization: they may be applied to certain clothing and furniture items, used as wallpaper and/or placed on the ground as tiles within the town. Players were able to upload and share their pattern designs in QR code form via the in-game clothing shop Able Sisters, which would connect online.

Nintendo produced many official designs distributed for free via QR codes, nineteen of which featured Splatoon theming.[11] The pattern distribution functionality of the QR codes requires no online connectivity; these codes continue to work despite the closure of online services.

First wave

On 23 July 2015, the Japanese Nintendo website posted nine QR codes for items in Animal Crossing: New Leaf that were based on Splatoon. [12]

Second wave

On 7 July 2016, ten additional QR codes were posted with a focus on the Squid Sisters due to the then-upcoming Callie vs. Marie Splatfest.[13]

Trivia

  • Inkwell's described desire to leave his past behind and goal of "squid" parallels an Octolings yearning for the surface and living amongst Inklings, which became one of the major plots during the events of Splatoon 2, particularly that of the Octo Expansion.

Etymology

Similar to the combination of Callie and Marie's names working as a pun on calamari, Cece and Viché's names combine as a pun on ceviche, another seafood dish.
