Callie vs. Marie was a final Splatfest event in Splatoon. It was held globally. It was announced on 30 June 2016. The results were given on 24 July 2016.
Details
Callie vs. Marie was the final Splatfest in Splatoon, pitting the two Squid Sisters against each other. Hence, several exclusive features were put in place to celebrate. It was the first Splatfest that lasted for 48 hours instead of the usual 24 hours. After 24 hours, the battle music changed from Ink Me Up to a very slightly modified version of Calamari Inkantation.[1]
A vote took place prior to the event, where voters selected the stages they wanted to play for this Splatfest. The vote was conducted by email; a ballot was emailed to all Splatoon players with a Nintendo Network ID.[2]

Promotion
Various tie-ins and promotional events were held around the world to coincide with this Splatfest. The Callie and Marie amiibo figures were released on 7 July 2016 in Japan and the following day everywhere else. An event course was added on Super Mario Maker titled "Squid Sisters vs. Bloopers" where players could unlock Mystery Mushroom costumes of Callie or Marie depending on the route they took. On Art Academy, Nintendo held a Splatfest Memories event where players could share Splatfest-themed artwork on Miiverse. On Miitomo, Splatoon-themed items and Miitomo Drop stages returned, as well as shirts based on the Splatfest Tees for Callie and Marie. After the Splatfest finished, all players received a free pin of Marie in her squid form, with Callie's pin going on sale.
In Japan, real-life versions of this Splatfest's tees were sold by Editmode from 30 June 2016 until 7 July 2016, along with the default Splatfest Tee design and the Squidvader Cap. These tees came with a matching wristband.[4] Video game vendors across the country had a special section where fans were able to write and post comments supporting the Squid Sister they chose. Those stores also offered post cards that mimic special cover art for Splatoon featuring Callie or Marie on the cover.[5] At the Niconico headquarters located in Ikebukuro, a Squid Sisters-themed pop-up café called the "Squid Sisters Meeting Place" (シオカラ集会所, shiokara shūkaisho) was set up. It was open from 9 July 2016 until 28 July 2016. Fans who dined in at the café received a set of Callie or Marie-themed mats and coasters and were asked whose team they were on. Merchandise from previous live performances were also sold in the café.[6] The second Splatoon album, Splatoon Live in Makuhari -Shiokalive-, was released on 13 July 2016.
In Europe, the Squid Sisters had their first overseas concert at Japan Expo 2016 in Paris, France on 8 July 2016, which was also when their amiibo released in the region. Their songs City of Color, Ink Me Up, and Calamari Inkantation were added to the European catalog of Wii Karaoke U with romanized lyrics on 28 July 2016. These songs were already added to the Japanese JOYSOUND catalog in January earlier that year. Splatoon also received a 25% discount on the European Nintendo eShop from 13:00 UTC on 7 July 2016 to 22:59 UTC on 21 July 2016.[7]
In the United States, Nintendo of America set up the Play Nintendo Family Lodge at the Marriott Marquis & Marina Hotel in San Diego on the same weekend as San Diego Comic Con 2016. Shirts based on this Splatfest's tees were given away at the event and on social media.[8]

Trivia
- A Callie vs. Marie final Splatfest was not initially planned by Nintendo; Splatoon producer Hisashi Nogami stated that the production team did not settle on the theme until they saw what a "great reaction" it had from fans. Nogami fought on behalf of Team Callie and was disappointed with the results of the Splatfest.[10]
- The development of Splatoon 2 had already started when the Callie vs. Marie Splatfest was taking place, and the production team had decided at that time to have its result reflected in the story of the sequel. They originally thought to announce the Splatfest with the phrase "Your choice will change the next Splatoon", but ultimately decided against this, as the sequel had not then been announced.[11]
- Instead, the Squid Sisters Stories were published online preceding the release of Splatoon 2. The Stories show what happened to the Squid Sisters after the final Splatfest; they rocketed to new heights of popularity and began focusing on their solo careers, causing them to drift apart and set up the events of Splatoon 2's Octo Canyon.
- While replaying the final boss battle of Splatoon 2, Marie states that the fight reminds her of this Splatfest, presumably due to the subject matter of Callie actually fighting against Marie.
- When Marie joins the battle, the song changes to Tidal Rush; the performer is listed as DJ Octavio feat. Callie vs. Marie, named after the Splatfest.
- The previous North American Splatfest Early Bird vs. Night Owl foreshadowed a Splatfest between the two Squid Sisters. During the results, the two got in an argument, with Marie stating that during the next Splatfest, they "play for keeps", with Callie agreeing, stating that things "just got personal." However, no such argument occurred for the Japanese or European Splatfests.
- The Splatfest Tees for this Splatfest say "Aori" and "Hotaru", the Squid Sisters' Japanese names.
- The data distributed to American copies of the game contains earlier drafts of the Japanese dialogue and the European English dialogue.
