Hana vs. Dango (花 vs 団子) was a Splatfest event in Splatoon 2. It was held in Japan only. It was announced on 23 February 2018. The results were given on 4 March 2018.
Details
The names of the teams are a reference to the Japanese idiom 花より団子 (Literally "[To prefer] dumplings over flowers"), meaning a preference for the practical over the solely aesthetic. The official English name provided in Private Battles is a transliteration of the two terms.
Hana vs. Dango featured the 8th Shifty Station layout, The Bunker Games.
Trivia
- Europe and Japan became known for their winning streaks for Pearl and Marina respectively, however, Japan was the first to refer to a winning streak in-game, as during the Hana vs. Dango Splatfest announcement, Pearl angrily complained about losing so many Splatfests in a row. Pearl ended up winning this Splatfest.

ヒメ 「今回はコレ! どっちを選ぶ? 花VS団子――!」 (This time, it's this! Which do you choose? Hana versus dango-!) |
イイダ 「おお~、春の足音を感じる お題ですね~♪」 (Ooh~, I can feel spring's footsteps approach in this title~♪) |
NOJ |
ヒメ 「対決するのは、 見るだけで気分ウキウキ! ココロの栄養補給! 「花」と!」 (The opponents are: Just seeing can excite the mood! Nourishment for the heart! "Hana" and..!) |
イイダ 「見るだけじゃ物足りない! 食べてハッピー♪ カラダの栄養補給! 「団子」です!」 (Just seeing is not enough! Eating happy♪ Nourishment for the body! "Dango"!) |
NOJ |
ヒメ 「… … … ハァー…」 (... ... ... haaa-...) |
イイダ 「ヒメセンパイ、 番組中におっきなタメ息ういて どうしたんですか?」 (Pearl-senpai, why are you breathing so heavily in the middle of the show?) |
NOJ |
ヒメ 「… … … ぱい…」 (... ... ... "pai"...) |
イイダ 「エ? なんです?」 (Eh? What's that?) |
NOJ |
ヒメ 「… んぱい… んだよ…」 (... it is.. ."-npai"...) |
イイダ 「エ? 「センパイ」? センパイはヒメセンパイで ワタシはセンパイじゃないですよ?」 (Eh? "Senpai"? If Pearl-senpai is my senpai, I can't be your senpai, right?) |
NOJ |
ヒメ 「ちげーよ! 連敗って言ったんだよ! ココさいきんのフェス ずーっと負けてんの!」 (Wrong! I was saying "renpai"! I've been losing Splatfests for so long!) |
イイダ 「エエ~~~?! センパイ気にしてんですか~? フェスの後は「楽しかったな!」って言ってますよね?」 (Ehhhh~~~?! Does senpai feel like that~? Weren't you saying "It was fun!" after the Splatfest?) |
NOJ |
Notes: The word 連敗 {Renpai} means "consecutive losses" and sounds like 先輩 {Senpai}, the honorific for one's elder in an equal standing. At this point, Pearl's team has lost the last six (Japanese) Splatfests in a row.
ヒメ 「まーな! アタシはみんなとフェスで盛り上がれて スゲー楽しいけど、 みんな応援してくれっからなー…」 (Well! I was caught up in everyone's excitement and it was really fun, but everyone was supposed to support me too...) |
イイダ 「みんなのために落ちこんでる ヒメセンパイかわいい…」 (You put yourself down for everyone's sake - Pearl-senpai is so sweet...) |
NOJ |
ヒメ 「んぁー! ウダウダ考えてもしゃーねーか! 気分を 切りかえっぞ! ちょうどお題もそんな感じだしな!」 (Huh-! Don't even THINK about it! Time to change the mood! Just like the theme says!) |
イイダ 「-」 |
NOJ |
ヒメ 「こういう時は キレイなお花とか ながめてさ、 気分をリフレッシュさせるのが 一番だよな!」 (A time like this calls for looking at pretty flowers, it's the best thing for making the mood refreshed!) |
イイダ 「センパイ! 花を見るだけじゃ元気は出ません! こういう時は あま~いものを食べなくっちゃ!」 (Senpai! Looking at flowers is not enough to keep happy! A time like this calls for eating swe~et things!) |
NOJ |
Notes: 元気 could also mean "healthy" in the physical sense, but in this context they are only talking about improving Pearl's mood.
ヒメ 「んだよ、 イイダ! アタシは甘いもん食ったら すぐ元気になるよーな 単純なヤツじゃねーんだよ!」 (Hey, Marina! I'm not one of those simple folk that cheer up just by eating some sweet stuff!) |
イイダ 「-」 |
NOJ |
ヒメ 「キレイなもんみて、 ココロが満たされることで 元気になれんだよ! デリケートなラッパーなんだよ!」 (Looking at pretty things, and satisfying your heart is what makes you happy! I'm a delicate rapper, you know!) |
イイダ 「ア~! センパイそれってワタシのこと 「単純なヤツ」って言ってるんですか?!」 (Ah~! Is senpai saying I'm one of those "simple folk" you were talking about?!) |
NOJ |
ヒメ 「-」 |
イイダ 「そりゃあ、 ワタシは楽屋のお菓子まっさきに 食べちゃいますけど…」 (Yeah, I'd eat candy in the dressing room right away but...) |
NOJ |
ヒメ 「楽屋に届く花束よりも先に 差し入れのお菓子に キャーキャー言ってるもんな!」 (I'd prefer a bouquet of flowers over this candy you're always stuffing into your face!) |
イイダ 「機材の調整に すっごい頭使うんです! 脳には 糖分が必要なんですから!」 (Setting up my gear is really cranial work! My brain needs high sugar content to function, is why!) |
NOJ |
ヒメ 「-」 |
イイダ 「それに『腹が減ってはナワバリできぬ!』って 言うじゃないですか♪」 (Besides, don't they say that "If you're hungry you can't do anything"?♪) |
NOJ |
Notes: Marina is bastardizing the idiom 腹が減っては戦ができぬ, literally "If you're hungry you can't fight" - having the same meaning as the English idiom "An army marches on its stomach".
ヒメ 「だれのコトバだよ… まー、 花よりも実を取るってのは イイダらしー気もするな…」 (Whose words are those... Well, I suppose picking fruit over flowers is the Marina thing to do...) |
イイダ 「じゃあこうしましょう! センパイはお花担当で ワタシは差し入れ担当!」 (Well, let's do it that way then! Senpai will be in charge of flowers, and I'll be in charge of things you stuff into yourself!) |
NOJ |
ヒメ 「ゲッ?! 聞き直った…」 (Huh?! I thought I heard you say...) |
イイダ 「-」 |
NOJ |
Notes: As Pearl notes, Marina's words are (unintentionally?) a double entendre. |

イイダ 「「団子」のみなさんも とてもがんばってましたよ~」 (Everyone in team "Dango" also totally did their best~!) |

Notes: Pearl is making a pun on the word いかした, "to be lively", by emphasizing the word イカ, "squid".

Notes: Pearl is referring to the announcement dialogue for this Splatfest
ヒメ 「やるじゃん、 イイダ! んじゃあ ウチので ちょっと早めの お花見やっちゃうか!!」 (Way to go, Marina! This way, we can go home faster to look at the flowers!!) |
イイダ 「贊成! ヒメセンパイのお家の屋内庭園、 手入れ用の重機が 特注なんですよね~」 (Great! The indoor garden at Pearl-senpai's house has custom-made heavy garden-care machinery, doesn't it~♪) |
NOJ |
ヒメ 「花や団子よりも 重機かよ?!」 (You prefer heavy machinery over both flowers and dumplings, don't you?!) |
イイダ 「ささ、 早く行きましょ~」 (Yes yes, let's go quickly~♪) |
