Honestly if anything it should be the other way around, but they told me I couldn't move that page to "Splatoon (game)", so here we are.
Splatoon is an upcoming snack food product by Nintendo. It was first announced on 1 April 2015 by the Squid Research Lab Tumblr account.[1] It was stated to be releasing that May, and... well, it still hasn't, but surely it's coming. Surely!
Description
Splatoon was initially described by Squid Research Lab as a "hot new snack", with noted confusion at what they thought was supposed to be the name of Splatoon.[1] Splatoon has still not been released, but Splatoon has, on 29 May 2015. It is unclear what the source of SRL's confusion was (seems pretty clear-cut to us, honestly).
They also imply that the snack contains squid, and they instead recommend a "freakin' quesadilla" (good call, SRL!) for squid consumption, because it'd be weird and "kinda creepy" otherwise. Well, we're not squids, but we've been noshing on quesadillas since 2015 anyway; they're a pretty good substitute!
There has been no announcement of a Japanese release of Splatoon, which is really a shame for them. They don't even eat quesadillas in Japan, really. When Splatoon eventually releases, we guess they can probably import them if they really want (how quickly does squid go bad? Does squid go bad? We should look that up later).

Fan reaction
Despite the continuing lack of release, reaction to Splatoon has remained active, yet polarized.
- Positive
- Tumblr user ct-4040 describes the announcement quite succinctly as "iconic".[2] Right on!
- User GooTheMighty says "Okay, but this looks delicious!"[3] We couldn't agree more, Goo!
- User Takkotito chimes in with "Quesadillas is it then!"[4] We sense a potential squid...
- Negative
- Inkipedia user Ballistik has said, quote: "It's been so long at this point. Are we even sure this is still coming out??" We can confidently say yes[Citation needed] to that, dear friend!
- And our very own patroller FancyRat opines "Guys this was so obviously a joke. It's been 10 years, please just give it a rest." Sounds like fighting words to us, FancyRat! Ha ha. Note to self, draft demotion request later
Quotes
“ | So...this whole time I thought "Splatoon" was going to be the name of the game, but it's not. Splatoon is actually a hot new snack that's coming out in May! You gotta be squiddin' me! Now you can have your squid and eat it too! Unless you're a squid, then...maybe don't because that's weird and kinda creepy. Maybe just eat a quesadilla. Yeah... Now you can have your squid and eat it too unless you're a squid then just eat a freakin' quesadilla! | ” |
Trivia
- There is an unknown orange squid mascot on the packaging for Splatoon. We don't know his name, but we like to think it's probably "Harold". He also has a cool purple cap. Looking good, Harold!
- Splatoon also appeared in Splatoon as an easter egg,[5] appearing if the player can defeat DJ Octavio while holding the Wii U GamePad upside-down. The player cannot eat it, as they are a squid and that would be weird and kinda creepy, but they can trade it with Judd for a much more squid-appropriate quesadilla.
Etymology
We don't really know where they got "Splatoon" from. We think it might be a play on "spittoon", but that's kinda gross if you ask us. Not cool, Nintendo.
