Inkipedia:Proposals/Passed/Image guidelines update

A proposal to update our file guidelines policy page to better reflect recent file handling developments and decisions across the wiki; the policy draft is available here. The draft is within Trig's userpages as they kick-started it but I wound up taking over.
The majority of the proposal is miscellaneous rules staff has already been working with, rather than suggestions of new rules; 95% of this draft is putting into writing the image organization guidelines Trig has fought very hard to implement over the past two years. As most files have already been thoroughly re-organized per these rules, no cleanup efforts are expected to follow immediately after, but may arise if found to be needed. Of particular note is the new file module written by Lake in late 2022.
The "largest" new guideline being suggested pertains to formally allowing the use of editor-taken emulated and/or modded screenshots and videos across the wiki. Yoshifan52 (talk) 21:34, 11 October 2024 (UTC)

- Addresses a wide range of topics, super well-written and much needed. Full support! It's moon [Talk!] 00:13, 12 October 2024 (UTC)
- I agree with the above! In my opinion, the current image guidelines are quite outdated and don't explain abbreviations, so they need to be updated.

Discussion
- Perhaps the
.ogg
extension thing should be reconsidered. Because "the Xiph.Org Foundation recommends that .ogg only be used for Ogg Vorbis audio files" according to Wikipedia. Explorer09 (talk) 11:26, 13 October 2024 (UTC)- OGG files have caused issues for some users, particularly those who use Apple devices, which can't play OGG files by default. This shouldn't be reconsidered, and also after the OGG files here have been converted to MP3.

- Phase out of vorbis is already underway with uploads no longer permitted and very few files left. They won't matter either way here in a bit. Trig - 20:51, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
- Clarification. I'm neutral on which file types are allowed for uploading on this wiki, but the issue was
.ogg
extension wasn't intended for video content (that use belongs to.ogv
not.ogg
). Perhaps this issue would be all moot if the OGG formats become deprecated in this wiki. Explorer09 (talk) 03:07, 18 October 2024 (UTC)
