List of mistakes on official social media coverage

The official social media coverage for the Splatoon series' game update announcements, often through the Squid Research Lab channels, has on occasion featured erroneous information, typos and/or mistakenly revealed new information ahead of schedule (leaks). This page documents these mistakes.

Typos

Typo refers to instances of typographical mistakes.

  • On 13 December 2014, the splatoonus Tumblr account released a post detailing several squid facts. In the hashtags, there is a typo for "#dubious squid facts", instead referring to it as "#dubious squid fatcs".[1]
  • On 28 February 2024 the @SplatoonNA Twitter account posted a video showcasing the Catalog for Fresh Season 2024. When the short clip that shows The Square Show-Off emote plays, the title erroneously changes to "The Spuare Show-Off".[2]

Errors

Erroneous mistakes includes instances of false information in posts as well as posts that have since been edited or deleted then replaced.

  • On 24 December 2014, the splatoonus Tumblr account released a post detailing Octolings. However, the hashtags used in the post were copied over from the previous post, which detailed Walleye Warehouse.[3]The post was deleted shortly, and a corrected post was issued the same day.[4]
  • On 28 August 2015, the splatoonus Tumblr account released a post detailing the L-3 Nozzlenose D. The post states "The sub weapon lets you finish off opponents who are still standing, and the special allows you to strike from up close."[5] However, it never actually states what the sub and special weapon are, that being Burst Bomb and Kraken.
  • On 13 February 2023 the @SplatoonNA Twitter account posted a Tweet in which the languages Inklings and Octolings speak were referred to as "Inkling" and "Octoling".[7] This Tweet alongside the following Tweet within the same thread[8] were deleted and then subsequently replaced.[9][10]
  • On 17 November 2023 the @SplatoonNA Twitter account mistakenly listed Splattercolor Screen as the Snipewriter 5B's sub weapon in a Tweet revealing the kit.[11] This is incorrect, due to the Snipewriter 5B not having Splattercolor Screen, and the fact that Splattercolor Screen is not a sub weapon, rather a special weapon. This Tweet was deleted shortly, and a corrected Tweet was later issued.[12]
  • On 29 November 2023 the @SplatoonNA Twitter account published a Tweet regarding FrostyFest promotional gear, then deleted it shortly after seemingly due to its phrasing being misleading.[13] A corrected Tweet was later issued.[14]
  • On 16 February 2024 the @SplatoonNA Twitter account posted a Tweet showcasing new gear being added to Salmon Run: Next Wave's store, but accidentally posted both the English and Japanese image of the menu. This tweet was deleted shortly, and a corrected Tweet was later issued.[15]
  • On 14 March 2024 the @SplatoonNA Twitter account posted about the then upcoming Full Stream Ahead Challenge. in the tweet, they mistakenly refer to the Challenge as "The 'Full Steam Ahead' Monthly Challenge". This Challenge was spelt incorrectly, and is also not a Monthly Challenge. Additionally, they also mistakenly referred to Inklings as "inkings".[16]
  • On 23 August 2024 the @SplatoonNA Twitter account posted several tweets detailing the upcoming Big Run event at the Grand Splatlands Bowl. However, in one Tweet they posted an image that stated it will take place from 7 September 2024 5PM PT, to 9 September 2024 5PM PT, which contradicts the information written in the Tweet, that being it takes place from 6 September 2024 5PM PT, to 8 September 2024 5PM PT. Both the incorrect Tweet and the subsequent Tweet detailing the new Golden Egg tally were shortly deleted, and corrected Tweets were posted later the same day. The corrected Tweet now reflects the time written in the original Tweet.[18]
  • On 6 September 2024 the @NintendoEurope Twitter account posted a memorandum from Grizzco about the upcoming Big Run event.[19] However, they forgot to include any hashtags in the Tweet. The post was shortly deleted, and a corrected post was released later the same day.[20]
  • On 15 January 2025, the @SplatoonJP Twitter account posted the winners of the New Year's Salmon Opening tournament. However, they forgot to add a hairstyle to one of the player's Inklings, making them appear bald.[21] They shortly replied to the original tweet with a corrected version.[22]
  • On 27 January 2025, the @SplatoonJP Twitter account posted the winners of the January 2025 Monthly Challenge.[23] However, when taking pictures of the 3rd place team, they forgot to remove any UI elements normally seen in-game. A corrected version of the image was posted shortly after.[24]
  • On 10 February 2025, the @Splatoon_FRA Twitter account and the @NintendoPT Twitter account posted the win screen of the Dark Chocolate vs. Milk Chocolate vs. White Chocolate Splatfest in their respective language.[25][26] However, instead of reading Team White Chocolate winning, the images erroneously stated that Team Sour won the Splatfest. That team was the third option of the Spicy vs. Sweet vs. Sour Splatfest, which happened right before the first appearance of the Dark Chocolate vs. Milk Chocolate vs. White Chocolate Splatfest in 2023. Those posts were quickly deleted and corrected images were posted later that same day.[27][28]
  • On 21 March 2025, the @SplatoonNA Twitter account incorrectly stated that the Morning vs. Afternoon vs. Night Splatfest would start and end at 6PM PT instead of 5PM PT.[29] The Nintendo Switch news article announcing the Splatfest also gave the same incorrect times.
  • On 27 June 2025, the @SplatoonJP Twitter account released a post showcasing call signs.[30] However, one of the Inklings in the image is wearing boots worn by Fuzzy Octolings, which are normally unobtainable. The Tweet was shortly deleted and replaced with a version where the Inkling instead wears Octoleet Boots.[31]

Incorrect terms

Incorrect terms refers to mistakes where a term used is different to the one used in game, but it does not affect the meaning significantly.

  • On 14 February 2024 the @SplatoonNA Twitter account posted a Tweet showcasing the Recycled Brella 24 Mk I. However, the Tweet misspelt the name as "Recycle Brella 24 Mk 1."[32] They additionally posted footage of the weapon on 16 February 2024, where it had the same misspelling.[33]
  • On 15 February 2024 the @SplatoonNA twitter account posted a Tweet showcasing the Douser Dualies FF. However, the Tweet misspelt the name as "Douser Dualies."[34] They additionally posted footage of the weapon on 16 February 2024, where it had the same misspelling.[35]
  • On 22 May 2024 the @SplatoonNA Twitter account posted a Tweet listing the Charcoal Decavitator's sub weapon as the "Splash Shield". It is a mistranslation of Splash Wall, using the directly translated Japanese name instead of the localized version.[38] The Tweet was taken down the next day, and a corrected Tweet was later issued.[39]
  • On 29 May 2024 the @SplatoonNA Twitter account posted a Tweet showcasing the Tableturf cards being added in Sizzle Season 2024. One of the cards showed off was the card for the Recycled Brella 24 Mk II. However, they misspelt the name as "Recycle Brella 24 Mk II."[40] This was fixed when the card was officially added to the game.
  • On 28 October 2024, the @SplatoonNA Twitter account erroneously referred to Super Sea Snails as "Super Sea Shells" in a Tweet.[41]
  • On 1 March 2025, the @SplatoonNA Twitter account posted an announcement about the Fresh Season 2025 starting. However, they called the season "Spring Fresh Season", which is a translation of the Japanese name, rather than the English name which is just "Fresh Season".[43]

Leaks

Leaking refers to disclosing upcoming or other thus unrevealed information prior to their official announcements.

  • On 16 August 2023, the @SplatoonNA Twitter account posted a tweet containing erroneous Challenge mode scheduling information that revealed the Modded Rainmaker Test-Fire a day before its formal reveal.[44] The tweet was deleted shortly after.
  • On 18 March 2024, the official Nintendo of America YouTube channel published a video showcasing Off the Hook's post-Halftime Splatfest song We're So Back rather than their pre-Halftime Splatfest song Color Pulse (2024).[45] Within a few hours, the video was removed.
