The Nintendo Switch 2 is an upcoming Nintendo console and the successor to the Nintendo Switch. After having been first mentioned by Nintendo on 7 May 2024 as simply the "successor to Nintendo Switch",[1] it was officially announced with its proper name via Nintendo's social media channels on 16 January 2025, alongside a website[2] and trailer[3] showcasing various aspects of the console, as well as a new game in the Mario Kart series.[4][5] A Nintendo Switch 2-focused Nintendo Direct was also announced for 2 April 2025,[6] as well as physical "Nintendo Switch 2 Experience" events to be held in the following months.[7][8] It is scheduled to be released at an unspecified time in 2025.

Features

The Nintendo Switch 2 appears broadly similar to its predecessor and will feature all its existing play modes.

New additions include:

  • Redesigned Joy-Con controllers.[2][3] They are larger to accommodate the larger console screen and insert directly into the sides of the console rather than using rails like the original Switch, with a redesigned release mechanism. They also feature altered button sizes, particularly for the and buttons, as well as a new button of yet-unclear functionality on the Joy-Con R, located underneath the button. The Joy-Con Grip also returns with a new form factor to accommodate the lack of rails.
  • Several new features[2][3] on the console itself: a wider stand similar to that of the Nintendo Switch OLED will be included, and the console now features a second USB-C port on its top in addition to the bottom.
  • Inherent backwards compatibility[2][3][9] with existing physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, as well as the Nintendo Switch Online service. It has been stated that certain games will be partially or wholly incompatible, although specific information on which games this will apply to is yet to be announced. Splatoon 3 appears to be compatible, as it is included in an infographic regarding backwards compatibility on the official website.
