Out-of-bounds

From Inkipedia, the Splatoon wiki
If the player falls off the stage or gets splatted, they explode into a cloud/mist of their team's ink color.
Not to be confused with out-of-bounds glitches.

Certain stages in Splatoon, Splatoon 2, and Splatoon 3 have out-of-bounds areas which are not actual stage hazards (such as water).

Description

These are usually set when falling off tall stages or jumping over stage barriers. When the player touches these areas, their character disappears in a puff of smoke of their ink color, after which the screen blacks out before they respawn. Out-of-bounds areas prevent players from accessing parts of the stage they are not supposed to be in, where otherwise they might be able to reach, or penalize players who fall off of the playable area of the stage.

Trivia

  • A bug in the Splatoon 2 version of Arowana Mall where dodge-rolling with dualies or using the Splashdown would cause the player to be splatted was caused by an out-of-bounds area, but inside a wall which these actions would clip into. This bug was fixed in Version 2.3.2.
  • Falling off the stage or falling into water has a faster respawn time than getting splatted.
    • The respawn time for drowning is seven seconds and the time for falling out-of-bounds is 5.5 seconds. Just like with getting splatted by an enemy player, only the splat-cam portion of this time is affected by Quick Respawn.
  • The sound effect and animation for falling out-of-bounds is the same as a player disconnecting during a multiplayer match in Splatoon and Splatoon 2.
