The Splatoon 2 UK Championship 2018 was a tournament held to determine the UK representative of the Splatoon 2 European Championship 2018-2019. The tournament was officially announced on 21 June 2018 and took place at multiple events across the UK, culminating in a Grand Final that was held on 24 and 25 November 2018.[1]

The tournament was nominated for "Tournament of the Year" in the UK Esports Awards 2019, though it lost to CWL London 2019. [2] [3]

Qualifiers

There were a total of nine qualifier events before the Grand Final took place, with two of them being held online. Two separate leagues were held, those being the Octo League (Ranked Battle modes for all ages) and the Inkling League (Turf War for under-13s).

The tournament had not yet been announced by the time the MCM Inkling Open had occurred, though it retroactively became the first qualifier.

The Grand Final was held over two days on 24 and 25 November 2018 at MCM Comic Con in Birmingham and was live-streamed on Nintendo UK's official YouTube channel.[12][13]

The Nintendo booth at the convention featured bleacher stands for attendees to watch the matches (for which every single bracket match was played on-stage), and miniature flags and visors were handed out as well. Each of the teams that qualified wore custom-made jackets with their team names written on the back, as well as introductory videos that were played before they played their first set. Due to Last Ditch Effort's status from winning the Last-Chance Qualifier, their jackets read "Team 8" and did not feature a pre-recorded intro video.

The stage hosts consisted of ItsJusNimmz, MarcWithaC, and Alysia Judge, each of whom conducted interviews with the winning teams of each set. They also hosted the extracurricular Splatoon-related activities across the weekend, those being a quiz, fan art contest, and cosplay contest.

The lead commentator of the bracket matches across the weekend was Bowie Alexander, who was joined by multiple guest commentators:

  • DonutDespair (Inkling League finals only)
  • Layla
  • McFootie
  • Nishikii

The Grand Final was notable for featuring a special public appearance from Splatoon series producer Hisashi Nogami. Throughout the weekend he spectated the matches, presented the medals and trophies to the top-placing teams, and signed autographs for attendees. In addition, Nogami officially announced the contents of the Version 4.3.0 update following the conclusion of the Inkling League Top 4, which notably revealed the Bomb Defense Up DX and Main Power Up gear abilities. Nogami stated that this would be the last update in which new weapons would be added, but this later proved to be false in January 2019 when the Sheldon's Picks weapons were revealed to be returning.

The Splatoon 2 MCM Quiz

The winners of the fan art contest were Emily Valinski, Kayleigh Page, and Ellie Aldred. Each of them received goodie bags & a framed copy of their submitted artwork signed by Nogami.

The cosplay contest was judged by JustJobiwan (then known as JobiwanUK), Pixipui (who frequently cosplayed as Marina at Nintendo convention booths), and Hisashi Nogami. The winners are listed below:
