Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U is a collective term used for the fourth and fifth[1] installments in the Super Smash Bros. series, titled Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, which were created by Bandai Namco and Sora Ltd. and released on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U respectively. The games feature mostly identical gameplay, but with several differences in other areas. The Nintendo 3DS version is the first game of the series to be released on a handheld console, while the Wii U version was the first to be released on an HD console.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS launched in Japan on 13 September 2014, Germany on 2 October 2014 and most other parts of the world on 3 October 2014, excluding Australia, where it was released on 4 October 2014. Germany's early access was due to coinciding with the German Unity Day, leading to the release one day prior, while Australia's delay was due to time zone differences. On 24 July 2015, the game was released in Hong Kong and Taiwan, while South Korea got its release on 10 September 2015. It sold 9.65 million copies, making it the eighth-best-selling Nintendo 3DS game.[2]

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was released in North America on 21 November 2014, 28 November 2014 in Europe, 29 November 2014 in Australia, and on 6 December 2014 in Japan. It sold 5.38 million copies, making it the fourth-best-selling Wii U game.[3]

Description

Super Smash Bros. is a multiplayer platform fighting game where players use various attacks, items, and techniques to deal damage to their opponents and knock them out of the stage. Increasing a character's damage percentage makes them fly back further when attacked, increasing the chance to be knocked far enough out of the playing field, resulting in a knock-out. Like its predecessors, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U feature collectible in-game trophies based on characters or items seen in various Nintendo or third-party games.

Amongst the new additions are the ability to customize both existing characters and custom Mii Fighters, altering their attacks and giving them unique power-ups. These characters can be transferred between the 3DS and Wii U versions of the game.

During the Splatoon Direct, special Splatoon-themed Mii Fighter costumes were announced to be added to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. Players who had pre-ordered or purchased Splatoon from GameStop between 8 May 2015 and 13 June 2015 would receive a download code for the Inkling Mii Fighter costumes in. These costumes were released and made purchasable for everyone on 14 June 2015.

Both the Inkling Outfit and Inkling Wig are available as one item set, with the Inkling Squid Hat being separate. These costumes are represented in the characters' respective default colors for each gender - orange for female (wearing the Fake Contacts, White Tee, and Pink Trainers) and blue for male (wearing the Fake Contacts, Zink Layered LS, and Purple Hi-Horses). The Inkling Squid Hat appears simply as a green Inkling squid, in the same way as its amiibo.

An Inkling trophy is given to the player if they purchase any of the Splatoon costumes. The trophy's pose is based on that of the Inkling Girl amiibo for Splatoon.

Quotes

Meet the Inklings, a mysterious race of beings that can transform into squid at will! They like to octopi their time with frantic, multicolored turf wars, and they won't miss out on any oppor-tuna-ty to get to the top. And we wouldn't go so far as to call them cod's gift to fashion, but check out that fresh style!
