Talk:List of bands in the Splatoon series
How do we know the 'cuttlefish idols' are cuttlefish? In Japanese, there's virtually no distinguishing words between cuttlefish and squid, and cuttlefish are just classified as squid in Japanese. Aeonium (talk) 17:05, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
Working on this page
I am working on updating this page. I have never done anything with tables so I made a copy to test with User:GX_64/bandlist_test. I just want to check that it is correct before I alter this page. Also, the current page is inconsistent with whether the species of the members is listed, or just their gender. I am not sure which is better GX_64 (talk) 12:04, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

unnamed idol band species
I am puzzled by the fact that we assume that the idols are cuttlefish but not that Tao Blu is a blue-ringed octopus. I am fully aware of the fact that Japanese doesn't make it completely and utterly impossible to know the difference between a cuttlefish and a squid, but I want to consider the factor of folk taxonomy. An example of folk taxonomy at play would be that yeti crabs aren't crabs, but many people think they are crabs due to the name. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, colloqiual Japanese doesn't distiguish between the two in a similar way that colloquial Norwegian doesn't distinguish between squid and octopuses. The word for the golden cuttlefish in Japanese is ウイカ kouika, which literally translates to "gold squid" (again, correct me if I'm wrong). We already see an example of name-species dissonance with Craig Cuttlefish, who is named after a cuttlefish dish in Japan despite being an Inkling. I suggest we change to give the idols a similar treatment to Tao Blu with a note explaining why, or add that neither has a confirmed species and note that they could be either -lings or the species they resemble.
