Hair color

There are too many unproductive edits on this page about colors. Please just discuss it here before editing. The original "Black/Teal" should be used in the event that no agreement is reached. Heddy (talk) 02:01, 27 February 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I suggested Plum Brown as her hair color because it is a dark purplish brown that is close to what she has. In the Splatfest art, she is shown with a deep, dark purple in her Pop art. As for Ketchup, she was shown with dark brown hair. Since she is represented with dark purplish brown in-game, Plum Brown would fit as the mix of the two, instead of having to put Purple-Brown or Purplish brown.--InuSaki (talk) 02:23, 27 February 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

No opposition to Plum Brown, so that's what we should go with. Any edit that changes it from Plum Brown to another color (without discussing here first) is at risk of being considered vandalism. Heddy (talk) 04:16, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I COMPLETELY disagree! It's supposed to be Black! I don't know about you, but it's Black to me!Destinithompson

I think it's Plum Brown anyway, besides, what it's supposed to be is irrelevant without a source. --Raltseye prata med mej 11:32, 13 March 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Keytar

I was going to mention Marina's keytar (w/Squid Sisters decal on the neck) in the trivia section *heh* Apparently I have to wait for this color matter to die down. *lol* -DJParticle (talk) 10:40, 1 March 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yeah sorry about that, DJ. It'll be editable again later of this week or tomorrow. I'm not really sure lol. --InuSaki (talk) 16:50, 1 March 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Breaking the 4th Wall

I was going to edit Marina's page with her "breaking the 4th wall" trend. I saw three instances for this: The Blackbelly Skatepark stage where she corrects Pearl about it being a stage and not a map, trying to prevent them from getting fired; a certain stage (I forgot which one was it) where Pearl ran out of free space from her text box, with Marina pointing that out; now the Chicken vs. Egg Splatfest where Marina points out they're living in a simulation and free will is a lie. Is three times enough to not be a trivia thing? Fairy27 (talk) 08:25 4 March 2018 (UTC)

I just created a wiki account because I was going to add exactly that (before noticing that the pages are locked for editing). Aside from the examples you mentioned, there's also the: "Does art imitates life? Or does life imitates art? Am I even real?!"; that, given the trend of her other comments, also seem to indicate a break in the 4th wall. It's pretty clear to me that there's a trend here, and should be noted on her page; it's one of the most interesting things about her. Ellye (talk) 20:28, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Just a heads up that the page is locked until 6 march 2018 kl. 03.01, (UTC +1) due to an on-going discussion/edit war of the color of Marina's hair. --Raltseye prata med mej 21:58, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It is editable now. You can add the trivia you wish to add. --InuSaki (talk) 05:07, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I can't find it, but there is an article where producer Hisashi Nogami stated in an interview that the characters of Splatoon may be aware that their world is in fact just a video game and that they're just characters in the game. Perhaps it has already been referenced in another relevant section of the inkipedia, but it might be relevant to add here as well if someone has a link. Octo-maker71 (talk) 00:59, 1 October 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Tupac reference

Just added a bit of clarification in the Trivia section. While it was kind of a meme that Pearl & Marina's outfits in Octo Expansion resembled in some respects the late rappers Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur, I couldn't really find any confirmation that the developers were intentionally trying to reference or pay homage the two deceased recording artists when initially designing their outfits (unless I've missed something). Keep in mind that crowns, big chains and reverse tied bandanas have been a part of Hip Hop and urban fashion for a very long time. I feel like it'd be like saying such-and-such rapper invented wearing the Do-Rag. So, I chose to add that this similarity was mostly something noticed by fans prior to the Expansion's official release. Octo-maker71 (talk) 00:36, 1 October 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Individual quote

So, since we've decided to do individual quotes for Off the Hook (and I guess the Squid Sisters) instead of just their band catchphrases, here's some I found for Rina!

  • "Don't tell her I said this, but Pearl is srsly the coolest." From her chat room
  • "Once our souls have been freed, there's no way we can continue to live under the oppression of Octarian society." My personal fave, also from her chat room
  • "I know we talk a lot of smack on the show and all, but I just wanted to say thanks. For everything." Oof these are all from her chat room xD

What do y'all think? 〜SplatterskytalkOE Icon Pearl.png

My favourite is the first one, as that sums her up well, but I'm not sure what others would think about the text speak element of it. May need another opinion on that. GloverMist (talk) 11:39, 24 June 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I like the third, myself, since I feel the first is a bit too focused on Pearl and the second is more fitting for the Inkantation itself, though I'd be fine with any of these. ShinyCelesteela (talk) 11:44, 24 June 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Mkay, just for consistency with Pearl's article, I'll add the third one for now, but I'm totally open to changing it if anyone has any other suggestions ^^ 〜SplatterskytalkOE Icon Pearl.png 02:50, 25 June 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I just saw "Off the Hook means everything to me! It's all I have in this world..." from the Chaos vs. Order announcement, and that seems to fit Marina very well too! Just a thought, ya know. GloverMist (talk) 20:33, 26 June 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think the second quote better suits Marina than the first and third quotes. User:Pikachucet (talk) 17:24, 30 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Marina's quote

I think the quote on Marina's page should either be changed, or just removed. It's too Pearl centric, especially considering that Pearl doesn't have a similar quote on her page. That's also the problem with the Octo Expansion-It's too focused on Pearl when it should really be focused on the Octolings like Agent 8 and Marina. And since there ISN'T a similar quote on Pearl's page about her feelings towards Marina, It just shows that Pearl might not like Marina at all (which is possible, Pearl is motivated by money but I won't bring that up).

Pearl is not the main part of OE, and shouldn't get so much attention.

Firstly, please do not duplicate talk page comments or place them at the top of the page - if this was an accident, I understand. Secondly, I believe that Marina's page quote isn't attempting to make some kind of comment about characters' relevance or focus, just a short quote that summarises her personality. You can view our previous discussion on this matter above.
If you have another idea for a quote that may fit Marina, please let us know, it would be great to hear alternate suggestions! Otherwise, please don't revert the current one, as it's reached a community consensus already. Thanks! GloverMist (talk) 15:36, 30 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I know this is a little off-topic, but considering Pearl literally drops an "I love you" in the Chaos vs. Order results dialogue, it's pretty clear that their appreciation for each other is mutual. ShinyCelesteela (talk) 16:39, 30 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Since Pearl and Marina put on their teasing on the news though, can we really believe everything Pearl says? (OK let's not go there actually let's only stick to what we know) User:Pikachucet (talk) 9:03 30 July 2019 (UTC)
Probably! Between Pearl saying being able to meet Marina is the greatest gift she's ever received in the Octotune chat log, Pearl threatening to "cut a fish" if Cap'n Cuttlefish does anything to Marina in the chat log, and in the same session saying Marina is "the best person she knows" even after learning about her past as an Octarian soldier, I'd say that even off the news she holds that appreciation for Marina. ShinyCelesteela (talk) 18:11, 30 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Here's the thing though. We're only going off of the English localisation, which isn't a faithful translation of the Japanese version. Pearl isn't as nice in Japan, and is more neutral or sometimes mean. If we just assume the English version is 100% accurate, we could also call the Dutch version canon, but like English it isn't. User:Pikachucet (talk) 22:34 30 July 2019 (UTC)
First of all, one of those sources I listed is Japanese-exclusive, so your point is more or less immediately invalid. But since you keep on whining about it, let me explain why I think the quote we currently have for Marina is the best one.
"I know we talk a lot of smack on the show and all, but I just wanted to say thanks. For everything."
While this quote is technically about Pearl, I feel it is a good summation of Marina's personality. She definitely teases others from time to time, but overall is grateful for the life she currently lives. Heck, her relationship with Pearl is in fact an important part of her character, since she's pretty much the one who introduced her to Inkling society after she defected from the Octarian army.
"Once our souls have been freed, there's no way we can continue to live under the oppression of Octarian society."
I feel this quote doesn't really feel Marina-specific. Sure, it's true that she was freed by the Inkantation, but so was Agent 8 and likely numerous other Octarians. It reveals a bit of Marina's backstory, but not much about her character, and since this is true for multiple characters within the series itself, I have trouble seeing how this is any sort of improvement. If the quote that currently is on the page links her character too much to Pearl, then I'd argue that quote links her too much to the Squid Sisters or Calamari Inkantation, which are arguably much less important when discussing her personality. You keep bringing up how biased we are, but between constantly trying to get Marina's quote changed and flat-out removing Pearl's quote from her page (For reference, that one was chosen because it's an iconic and memorable scene in Octo Expansion) I feel the only one with a bias here is yourself. ShinyCelesteela (talk) 15:14, 31 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I disagree. You do seem pretty determined to make sure Pearl gets attention. That's actually one of OE's flaws-it tries to focus on Pearl numerous times despite her being an Inkling. The Agent 8 text quote is not Marina specific either, but it makes more sense than putting a Pearl centric quote in there, especially since Pearl's quote could apply to LITERALLY ANY INKLING OR OCTOLING WHO CAN ALSO SAY BOOYAH! Maybe there shouldn't be a quote there. You two won't stop fighting otherwise. User:Muc-Mhara64 (talk) 19:06, 31 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
...Yeah I am 97% convinced you are a sockpuppet of Pikachucet. Exact same syntax, exact same arguments, c'mon now. Try at least a little harder. ShinyCelesteela (talk) 18:34, 31 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

In order for a change to be made, a consensus must be reached, and in order for a consensus to be reached, a respectful discussion must occur. This is not currently happening. While I'm here I will say that I prefer the current quote because it focuses on her current self as a whole while the proposed one focuses more on Octarians and not her. Alright. I apologize for letting things get so out of hand. While I usually try to handle things in the best manner that I can, I will admit that I am also quick to lose my patience in times of heated debate, and that is something I should consider working on. I apologize for any mistakes I may have made over the past few days. ShinyCelesteela (talk) 19:51, 31 July 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have to apologise too. I admit that I have a hatred for Pearl, and I don't like that she's everywhere, but that's no excuse for my immaturity. I also sometimes lose my patience and sometimes don't like being told I'm wrong if I really care about something. I take full responsibility, because this wouldn't have happened if I didn't overreact. User:Pikachucet (talk) 21:00 31 July 2019 (UTC) I do think changing the quote should at least be considered though...please don't fight me on that, I won't do anything unless it's ok. About the manga…

I wish to counter the argument that Dear Pearl is "ambiguously canon and not apart of the actual universe." It is not treated as just another bonus feauture; it is not listed on the table of contents in the volume, and the announcement on CoroCoro hypes up the manga a LOT, treating it as a major discovery by the Squid Research Lab. While it would be no wonder to me if SRL would cover manga stuff, given its role as a news channel network, they have never treated any non-canon content that way. I also fail to see why, if it only applied to the world of the Splatoon manga, it is not made by Sankichi Hinodeya. Miss Delibirda (talk) 20:47, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The manga is almost a retelling of Splatoon's events, basically meaning it's ambiguously canon, it also has events that don't happen in the game, another point to it being ambiguously canon, also crude humor isn't is the game PearlFan23 PearlFan23 character.png 20:51, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Correct. That's the Splatoon manga. That is not Dear Pearl, however.--Miss Delibirda (talk) 20:53, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Usually stuff that are made by a third party is not canon, and there is absolutely no proof in the game about Dear Pearl being true PearlFan23 PearlFan23 character.png 20:54, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'd argue there's "missing" in-game proof about a lot of stuff, like the band lore for example, and yet we still take it as canon

It is not third party, the thank-you says, and I quote, "Squid Research Lab, Seita Inoue, thank you very much!" Seita is one of the directors of the games, including Splatoon 2. The fact that Dear Pearl was published in a volume of the manga series has no relevance to its canonicity. If it wasn't, its very existance would be absurd. because it's teaching kids how to end the human race, and plus we were never made to have a same sex relationship, if we were men could get pregnant and women could make men get pregnant and the same vice versa, atheism encouraged the dumb lgbt bullcrap, if you were born a girl you are a girl, if you are born a boy you are a boy, you cannot change who you were born as, God created women to be with men so that's who that woman should be with. @PearlFan23; Amen, girl! That "fan ship" is the NUMBER ONE thing I hate about the Splatoon community. They twist the context of promotional art (e.g. Salsa vs. Guac) and EVEN Splatfest results dialog to their liking (Primarily in Team Chaos' win where Marina got emotional). As for the "maiden of love" title conspiracy, there are MANY different definitions of love other than "kissy romance". I see it as "friendship love", where two people, either boy or girl, form a bond with each other as "best friends" with no intent of sexual involvement. P.J. Now that Marina's tendency to draw Pearl bishoujo has made it to alpha canon (in-game canon), where we see an example on Marina's laptop during the explanation of Order's goals, it should be mentioned in the article as full canon, but the way the "personality" section is worded, I find it difficult to add. About a cited quote

I've noticed that Marina#cite ref-5 references the NoA Spanish localization, which is fine, as it's an fairly accurate translation, but I think that it might hold more weight to cite the original line.

"そう言えば、ワタシがイカさんの世界に来た時、言葉が話 せなくって、センパイに言葉を教えてもらいましたよね~♪" (source)

"That reminds me, when I came to the world of squids, I couldn't speak a word of the language, so I had senpai teach me~♪" (Slightly paraphrased just to avoid repetition, let me know if i got something super wrong or anything)

The line that comes after it also has some good information in the Japanese version.

"あー思い出した!昔、ナンタイ山で初めて会った時、 イイダ、カタコトだったな" (source)

"Oh, I remember! Way back when we first met on Mount Nantai, Marina, you were speaking in broken Inkling"

That said, I don't want to just delete the quote and replace it without asking.

LimitedEditionJuddMug (talk) 16:42, 26 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Crush?

I don't want to start another argument, only a civilized discussion. In the personality section, Marina is said to have a crush on Pearl. Is this really confirmed? In the Japanese version, Pearl is portrayed as acting like a little kid, and Marina calls her cute multiple times. I thought that she called her cute similarly to how one would call a little girl cute. And I know Dear Pearl exists, but can we say it's canon? The manga is unanimously considered to be not canon (or at least ambiguously canon). As someone else pointed out, in the relationship chart, the word "love" doesn't necessarily mean romantic love.

Also, the reasons given don't really mean anything. I have a friend who's really short and we joke about it all the time, and it's not at all a romantic thing (That would be really weird). When Marina gets emotional about Pearl saying she wanted to break up the band, I'm pretty sure anyone would also get emotional if their friend just decided to ditch them. Marina gives Pearl a MASSIVE hug at the end of Octo Expansion. While this could be seen as a romantic thing, I'm pretty sure that hug was an appropriate reaction to her friend saving the ENTIRE WORLD.

Again, not trying to start another fight, but I'm just not sure. I don't know if this should really be considered canon. Thanks if you read the whole thing lol. Rat L. Boy (talk) 00:37, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I disagree that Marina would have used "cute" toward Pearl in the same way that one would a child, especially because Pearl is older than her. Pearl does act bratty and childish sometimes, but she is an adult. Also in the Japanese version, Marina often refers to Pearl as "senpai", showing that she respects her as older and more experienced than herself.
While there is some uncertainty what counts as concrete proof of the crush, the manga that heavily implies it's true is canon. It's separate from the rest of the manga, drawn by the series' art director (Seita Inoue), and got an announcement on the SplatoonJP twitter account.
As for the reasons you brought up: The content of the short jokes isn't what's important there, it's the playfulness of the remarks and how Pearl seems fine with them; the page is not trying to imply that short jokes are inherently romantic. If you reread the Final Fest result dialogue, Marina gets most emotional after Pearl says that she loves Marina, which is what's being pointed out there. And while the hug alone doesn't have to be romantic, it's the larger context of their interactions that matters, not just that specific action in a vacuum.
Considering all of the above, taken together, I believe that it should be considered canon and does belong on the page. Sourguppyworm (talk) 06:01, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I just think that the "playful jokes" about Pearl's height are just playful. They don't reflect on her feelings toward her in any way. As for the "cute" part, I think that one could call someone they respect cute (in a childish way) even if they are older. I guess it could really be seen both ways, but if most people see it that way then it doesn't have to be changed. Thanks! Rat L. Boy (talk) 14:38, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
While the word "love" in English does not always insinuate romantic love, there are several different words for "love" in Japanese, with unique implications. Marina is referred to as"恋する乙女", "a girl in love", on the Splatoon Base website, and "恋" is the word for romantic love. There isn't really any ambiguity there.
I'd also like to note that many of the lines translated as jabs at Pearl's height in English were genuine observations in Japanese, with no implications of being deliberate jokes, so much as Marina innocently stating things that might be construed as insulting. LimitedEditionJuddMug (talk) 14:19, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Then maybe we could say something like "In the Japanese version, Marina is shown to have a crush..." or whatever because it only seems to be a thing in the JP version of the game. Nothing really needs to be changed if you don't want to. Rat L. Boy (talk) 15:34, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think in general, unless the information is directly contradictory to something stated in English, it isn't a necessary distinction to make. Plenty of information is conveyed in media that doesn't get translated at all, but is generally treated as canon, because the Japanese version is the original. There's nothing that would directly contradict this in English, so the only reason to treat it as absent in English would be to insinuate censorship. Which is possible.
If I'm being honest, I prefer to prioritize presenting the information given the Japanese version, entirely because that is the original intent. Some English Splatfests directly contradict the established canon. (For example, the narwhal landlord)
But the English version is probably the most ubiquitous, so it's only natural most people would treat it as default.
LimitedEditionJuddMug (talk) 19:02, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okay, I guess we don't have to distinguish it, though I do think that could be good. I just have one question. The narwhal isn't canon? I thought marine mammals survived. Rat L. Boy (talk) 19:51, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Not in the Japanese version of the Splatfest. Arceusgjengen (talk) 20:01, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I was thinking something like this. "In the original Japanese version of Splatoon 2, Marina is shown to have a crush on Pearl, and is even described as a "maiden in love" on Splatoon Base, although this is absent from all localizations of the game." I think this would be a better way to word this than what is on the page now. Rat L. Boy (talk) 20:29, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The game itself never states it, I'm pretty sure. Arceusgjengen (talk) 20:39, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't know. I don't play the JP version or know Japanese. I've just been told it does. Rat L. Boy (talk) 20:43, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Other aspects of the games make it quite clear all mammals were wiped out, including marine ones. Some dialogue refers to killer whales as "dinosaurs", which they have fossils of in museums, and the description of flipper floppers also implies that dolphins are extinct. The narwhal line is the only time marine mammals are implied to be alive, and was not in the Japanese version, it was only created by Nintendo of America, probably with minimal input from the Japanese team.
LimitedEditionJuddMug (talk) 14:32, 2 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I will say though that the Japanese version insisting that Marine Mammals are also extinct actually makes less sense than if they were still around (and their inclusion in the English translation doesn't interfere with the plot in any way, particularly since when mammals are discussed they're exclusively talking about land mammals which went extinct because the land became uninhabitable, something that wouldn't apply to cetaceans that literally can't live on land), but that's a bit off topic. CatCet3 (talk) 19:03, 28 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Doesn't change the fact that they are extinct. And it may not affect, the plot, but it affects the lore Olivia (talk) 20:08, 28 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I mean, if they were to retcon it suddenly I don't think it would cause any problems in terms of the lore, which Nintendo doesn't care too much about anyway, as interesting as it has the potential to be CatCet3 (talk) 20:21, 28 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't really agree with your recent edit - it is part of her personality and traits, as the section is named - and putting it in trivia would make sense, IF it was not a relevant piece of info. It doesn't seem like other trivia points, which are more minor pieces of info, that only show once or twice. This is more of something that is connected to multiple things, said things being her personality and traits, and whatever else.
Simplify the info if you feel it's too verbose, but it is not something at the level of simple trivia - and also should not be simplified to the point where it loses its original, very much there, complexity. Marblyso (talk) 18:14, 3 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Then you can revert the edit if your really think it's bad. Sorry about that. Rat L. Boy (talk) 18:15, 3 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Would it make sense to add that it is only in the JP version to the trivia? Rat L. Boy (talk) 20:03, 3 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If you deem it necessary - but arguably it can/has shown in other versions Marblyso (talk) 21:59, 3 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think I'm gonna do it. If people really think it's not good, then they'll either revert it or talk to me and then revert it. Thanks! Rat L. Boy (talk) 00:51, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm a little confused as to how what I added to the trivia (not the first thing I did) was bad. It adds needed information, while not removing any that was there. I believe the fact that the localizations don't hint at this was good for interesting trivia, and while it can be argued against, I feel like the some of the reasons given for how the translations hint at it can also be argued against and seem (at least to me) as random things being twisted into a romantic thing. I really don't want to cause any problems or get people mad at me. I just feel this is a necessary bit of information to be added. Rat L. Boy (talk) 18:18, 6 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Where is Marina's Palette?

I noticed all the other characters that had a palette showed them on their character page. But I checked Marina's and she didn't have one. AmberxEmber (talk) 23:19, 30 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm new so I don't know how to place the palette there! Help! AmberxEmber (talk) 03:08, 8 April 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oh, it got fixed now, my bad AmberxEmber (talk) 00:20, 11 April 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
