Species of the character on the right?

Should it be added that the character on the right might presumably be a Sea Cucumber? They share several characteristics. -Random 13:11, 30 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

They might, i personally think they might be some sort of turnicate or maybe even a barnacle because their hands kind of look like the feelers. I dunno though. What characteristics do they share? If there's enough evidence we could add it RotM Icon Frye.png Squidcat (talk) 13:17, 30 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The style of the mouth, lack of eyes (it looks like they're just wearing glasses to improvise), arms/hands, etc etc. Someone made a connection to the two and they look very similar. -Random 14:11, 30 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Degrees of resemblance vary, so we should wait until confirmation. Arceusgjengen (talk) 14:43, 30 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Martin's species (confident)

There is a squid species shown in the HaikaraWalker magazine that looks extremely similar to Martin wherein it is called medamahouzukiika in hiragana although you can also ideally search up about it in katakana.

Either way, you will see from images that it is an exact match with Martin. While it doesnt have a wikipedia page, there are fishing and animal websites that describe it. https://paleontology.sakura.ne.jp/medamahouzukiika.html ~~~ ASARIDEAD (talk) 22:47, 26 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The resemblance is very clear, nice catch! I've added the information to the page. Turns out there is a Wikipedia article about the species, but not in Japanese. Thanks! Yoshifan52 (talk) 09:33, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Actually, looking into it, and I think Taonius borealis might be an even closer match? Not only does it have the same big eyes and tentacles, but it also has the same orange coloration Martin has. There's a few deep sea squids which have that face, this one just seems like the closest match to me! WayslideCool (talk) 15:46, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It looks like your edit is indeed more accurate, I apologize for not having investigated properly! I've reverted my edit for now. Yoshifan52 (talk) 21:42, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think when it comes down to it, Medamahouzuki Ika has more credibility due to it being highlighted in HaikaraWalker and thus, it being in the forefront of the artists's minds. I dont have a problem with it being changed, as its not really a big difference and theyre the same kind of squid. We will find out someday in any case. Jessika's JPN name meaning/reference?

jessika's JPN name (トブロ , at least according to the google translate draw option) translates to either Toguro or Toburo (Toguro when image-translated from the SplatoonBase site, Toburo through the drawing panel). i was curious and looked at the lolita link on this page and 'kuro' and 'guro' caught my eye- both styles of lolita fashion which obviously share the '-uro' part of her name. kuro is entirely black clothing; guro is centred on horror. (those are both Fandom links btw, my sincerest apologies lol)

jessika's style doesn't exactly align with either of those, but i can see that nintendo wouldn't want to go full-in with the blood/gore/horror in an E-10+ game lol. but i just though it was interesting!

and then the at the start which provides the 'tu' is apparently derived from a different kanji, , which is a conjunction as far as i can tell, possibly in reference to her hair/tentacles. also the wiktionary for ト mentions 'ト' being a 'coordinate term' (idk.) for a musical note (i also don't know. i don't know a word of jpn). It's definitely トグロ, not "トブロ". Harimaron (talk) 06:07, 28 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
that's. egregiously my bad, sorry. i think the font probably mixed me up some, but then it would probably also help it i looked at things closer (or had any idea about what i was talking about in the first place) Eekkan.410 (talk) 17:57, 28 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'd prefer to leave the pun-untangling to those more knowledgeable on the language; it appears their name may be partially based on a standalone word. Yoshifan52 (talk) 06:15, 28 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
that makes a lot more sense, actually. and yeah, probably best for someone who actually knows the language lol.
also, this tumblr post mentions it's from the toguro squid (genus spirula- goes with coil, which you linked as the standalone).
i'll leave it to the professionals in the future lol Eekkan.410 (talk) 09:49, 28 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
