When Hākoakoa was 10, she was taken away from her hometown and conscripted in the Octarian Military, despite her disabilities. She worked as a low-level soldier, her body becoming very scarred, her disabilities worsening, and developing PTSD - though all the while still being whole-heartedly faithful to DJ Octavio and the army. When she was 14, her friend showed her a strange video they'd found. Initially, Hākoakoa was taken aback by the pounding drums, the heavy guitar, and the inkling screaming obscenities at the top of their lungs, but the more she listened to it, the more she fell in love with it. The energy, the passion, the ear-splitting wall of sound, it was brilliant! Since that day, she couldn't stop thinking about it, the music playing over in her head again and again, drowning out even the sound of Turquoise October - she couldn't help but wonder what kind of world this music could have come from, what kind of world she was missing out on. Less than a year later, Hākoakoa escaped to the surface and to the dazzling streets of Inkopolis.
By some miraculous twist of fate, she stumbled upon the band she'd been dreaming of, a familiar voice echoing out from the door of a seedy Punk venue. The band was called SashiMori, led by an inkredible inkling named Pearl (headcanon). That day, Hākoakoa's life truly began. Soon she met an Inkling just about her age, the both of them in a program for unhoused kids, though the Inkling was only there temporarily while the paperwork was processed for them to go live with their elder sister. His name was Pikapʉ̠, a scrawny little wannabee Punk-Rockstar with a burning passion for turf war battles. The two became close quick, and Hākoakoa moved in with them some months later. Despite being hesitant at first, Pikapʉ̠ got Hākoakoa into turf war big-time, and though her disabilities restricted her play substantially, it quickly became her main hobby. The two formed an amateur Punk band, and spent any time not turfing or sleeping writing and playing music. Years later, with a heavy yet steady heart Hākoakoa decided to go her own way, tracking down and returning to her hometown to reconnect with her community and people, and was welcomed back with open arms. She quit turf war in that time, to focus on resting and healing. She rekindled her childhood loves for fishing and traditional music, received her Kauae, and learned how to work with her forever-changed brain and body.
Now, she's moved back in with Pikapʉ̠, living now in the Splatlands, officially cut off from his sister, to continue turfing, making music, and looking after each other when they both sorely need it. Hākoakoa can now be found strolling around Splatsville, rarely seen without Pikapʉ̠, a tattoo of an outdated SashiMori logo peaking out from under her shorts, wearing an old, stained Annaki Polpo-Pic Tank and a content smile.
