User talk:PearlFan99
Hey
I just joined and wanted to bring up on something of the symbol used for the flag of France. I wanted to point out that it was updated in 2020 and we should use that one from now on, but as I wanted to make the discussion for it, it just blocked me. I don't know what I did wrong for this to happen. Driftin Soul, sorry for mention, but mind helping me out here? PearlFan99 (talk) 06:51, 16 February 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, it looks like our automated abuse filter read a false positive for spam from your edit, so sorry about that! I've unblocked your account and passed along the issue to other staff members so it can be investigated; for now I'd recommend avoiding trying to make that same talk page edit, but if you want to upload the updated French flag over the existing file you should be able to. Thanks for your understanding & patience!

- How do I do that? PearlFan99 (talk) 17:45, 16 February 2025 (UTC)
- On the file page for File:FlagFrance.svg, you should see a link that says
Upload a new version of this file
, and from there it should be pretty simple. You won't even need to change the source since our older version is already from Wikimedia Commons! - Also, about your abuse filter block: your edit was caught because your edit unintentionally met some of the criteria for the abuse filter to catch such an edit. The intention is that it warns users before going to a block, so I should ask if it prevented you from pushing the edit at first and/or gave you a system message stating such? Either way, our apologies again that it gave you trouble. I am planning to bring up with other staff members the idea of adding a brief abuse filter section to Inkipedia:Policy/Blocking, as false positive blocks have historically been rare but do occasionally happen.
- And one last thing, please don't edit your signature timestamps to reflect your local(?) timezone; the intent is that consistent use of UTC makes it easy for users from anywhere in the world to parse the flow of a conversation, and manually editing it to a different one can also break some aspects of our software. Thanks!

- Should we also update the mixed Canada/France flag so it shows the new France flag? PearlFan99 (talk) 18:54, 16 February 2025 (UTC)
- I tried and it didn’t change. It still shows the pre-2020 flag somehow.
- I tried reverting multiple times and I realized only there it showed the 2020 flag even though it still shows the pre-2020 flag after uploading. Not sure if I did anythign wrong. PearlFan99 (talk) 18:56, 16 February 2025 (UTC)
- Cache issue most likely, should fix itself after waiting a few hours. Gallium!

- Update: I updated it yesterday and while it still showed the pre-2020 flag on my iPad afterwards, it took a few hours before it started to show the new flag. Before then it did show on my iPhone after updating. PearlFan99 (talk) 03:43, 25 February 2025 (UTC)

- limited capacity to reply: quit reverting and re-reverting. this only exacerbates the problem and makes it far harder for Anyone to help. Trig - 19:40, 16 February 2025 (UTC)
- Just wasn’t sure why it wasn’t showing there. Had to see if it would change anything but didn’t. PearlFan99 (talk) 20:00, 16 February 2025 (UTC)
- Recently updated the mixed Canada/France flag to match the current colors for both. PearlFan99 (talk) 04:28, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
Translation
Hey, per policy I'm going to have to ask that you do not attempt to contribute translations for languages you're not fluent in, no matter how obvious or simple the term at hand might seem. Staff has noticed that you've been adding several translations for languages you haven't mentioned fluency in, some of which have been shaky on top of that.
We have plenty of fluent speakers of almost every language we need to cover on a regular basis, and even if we didn't it's better for us to have incomplete or missing info than misleading or outright wrong info. As the policy mentions, we take this pretty seriously, so please avoid it in the future. Thanks for your time and understanding. Driftin Soul [Talk!] 04:12, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- Honestly the only other language I am fluent with is Spanish, so perhaps I might just add the meanings for Spanish whenever possible and leaving translations of what other languages mean to other people, or probably just not add the meanings for any languge even if I add what it is in another language. Block
Since apparently neither the warning on this page nor the one privately on Discord explicitly telling you not to translate languages you're not fluent in stuck, I'm hoping this will get the message across: do not attempt to translate languages you are not fluent in. It is explicitly forbidden by site policy, and in accordance with said policy a block is being placed on your account in the hopes that if you have so far failed to understand the meaning of the warnings given to you, you will at least now understand the severity with which they were delivered. Driftin Soul [Talk!] 07:30, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
- Once I’m unblocked I focus just editing only the language part for other languages…
- Anyone I can ask on meanings for other languages? PearlFan99 (talk) 07:58, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, the only restriction is: only edit languages you are fluent in. You have stated you are fluent in Spanish, so that's the only NiOL language you should be touching. I don't see any reason to stop editing NiOL entirely.
- You should not be asking for meanings on other languages. If you are not fluent in those languages, then those meanings are not your concern, other than perhaps noting the need in the "translation needed" template. Heddy (talk) 17:23, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
- Well I was gonna make an edit for the Latin American Spanish for Intensity vs. Endurance (De intensidad vs. De resistencia) where after looking at it, it meant Intensity vs. Resistance. The edit never came to be however. I guess even at another language I'm fluent at I may not always get the meanings. PearlFan99 (talk) 18:15, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
- You can also request edits from other editors in our Discord chats, for which we have ping roles for languages. All of this is covered in the translation policy; please thoroughly read it if you have not yet.
