This page is a draft.
It is currently being worked on and may be moved to the mainspace when ready.

There are a wide variety of implied characters in the greater Splatoon series who exist only in the form of being mentioned by other characters, in-universe text, or real-life sources (such as developers in interviews). Their status as implied does not necessarily make them minor characters; some implied characters may still serve rather significant roles, such as contributing in-game music or graffiti, or being close relations of other major characters. As such, this page aims to collect details about these characters.

Characters related to Marie

The following characters have only been established via their relation to Marie:

Marie's parents

In later chapters of the Squid Sisters Stories, during an impromptu home visit to Calamari County, Marie's parents are mentioned. They are stated as being overjoyed to see their daughter in person after a prolonged absence, but also intermittently probe Marie with questions about Callie, who is absent due to a scheduling conflict and due to arrive the next day. Their questions about their niece prove to be a source of internal consternation for Marie, who feels sensations of guilt and uncertainty, and struggles to answer them beyond vague assurances of Callie's well-being. Ultimately, Marie is forced to cut her time with her parents short when Callie fails to arrive, having disappeared into Octo Canyon (unbeknownst to Marie).

Characters related to Marina

The following characters have only been established via their relation to Marina:

Marina's landlord

In announcement dialogue for the North America/Oceania Unicorn vs. Narwhal Splatfest, this character is brought up as an example of a real narwhal by Marina after Pearl expresses doubt in their existence. When Marina brings up an anecdote in which the landlord's tusk is mentioned (he is alleged to clean it with a toothbrush thrice daily), Pearl redoubles her skepticism, to Marina's great dismay.

Marina's sponge friend

In Inkopolis News dialogue for Port Mackerel, when Pearl states that using the sponges is key to battling effectively, some localizations have Marina express confusion by mistaking them for the animal; some, including English, further have her express her dismay by stating that she has a friend who is a sponge (or in one case, multiple friends).

Characters related to Pearl

The following characters have only been established via their relation to Pearl:

Pearl's grandmother

In announcement dialogue for the Retro vs. Modern Splatfest, Marina rhetorically questions Pearl's devotion to the retro aesthetic by asking how Pearl can possibly manage to stay fresh while wearing her "grandma's bellbottoms". Pearl in turn angrily demands that Marina "LEAVE GAMGAM OUT OF THIS".

Pearl's parents

Pearl's parents are mentioned somewhat infrequently, mostly in Inkopolis News dialogue. Specifically, outside of one line for Camp Triggerfish that collectively mentions them, it is only her father that is mentioned. It could be presumed given Pearl's surname that their names are also "Houzuki", although whether the name might originate paternally or maternally is unknown.

Overall, it can be reasonably assumed that Pearl's parents are considerably affluent, as Pearl's dialogue suggests on numerous occasions that she experienced many of the trappings of wealth even before her own independent success as a musician. In addition to being mentioned as the owners of Camp Triggerfish, Pearl expresses her intent to have her father finance a concert stage on-site for her and Marina to use. Additionally, Pearl mentions receiving a ship identical to the Manta Maria for her sixth birthday.

In other regards as well, Pearl's father can be assumed to be rather doting, as he is mentioned as giving his daughter (dubiously effective) childhood bicycle-riding lessons in news dialogue for Snapper Canal, as well as providing her with platform boots to wear on trips to Wahoo World for the purpose of sidestepping the height requirements for rides.

Pearl's schoolmate

A piece of Inkopolis News dialogue for Snapper Canal involves Pearl sharing a childhood anecdote about having been brought there by a boy from her school. No further details are given, but Marina excitedly attempts to interrogate Pearl for them (two of the possibilities she proposes for the outing are a date or a battle).

Pearl's uncle

In announcement dialogue for the Family vs. Friends Splatfest, Pearl gleefully reminisces about pranking her uncle with a wrapped live Splat Bomb on Squidmas morning. She goes on to elaborate that she sees some of her distant relatives as "wacky", but heavily values them nevertheless and feels comfortable around them; this may explain why such a prank would be seen as simply an innocuous, humorous occurrence.

"Freshly Fried Boy"

This character is only mentioned during the special Inkopolis News bulletin that plays after completing Bomb Rush Blush, the final mission of Octo Canyon. Overjoyed with the news of the return of the Great Zapfish and Callie, Pearl and Marina agree upon the idea of playing a new song in celebration, and Marina chooses a request from a "Freshly Fried Boy" to play the Squid Sisters' new single Fresh Start, thereby beginning the credits of Splatoon 2.

Inkopolis News producer

The producer of Inkopolis News is mentioned only a scant three times; in the first instance in the Splatoon 2 Direct, they are described by Pearl as panicking while the news is in progress, which prompts Pearl to direct Marina to the teleprompter. Marina checks it and announces the details of the Splatoon 2 Splatfest World Premiere.

The other two instances occur in-game, both in special news broadcasts: in the first, the dialogue proceeds almost exactly the same as in the aforementioned case, but with a different ending: Marina's pronouncement of the Great Zapfish's disappearance, kicking off the events of Octo Canyon. The final instance is in the "Inkopolis Fashion Focus" news segment coinciding with the release of the Octo Expansion; as Pearl announces the segment, Marina first reacts with confusion at its absence from the news script, before scolding her by asking if the segment was approved by the producer (which Pearl answers with an emphatic "NOPE!").

Lord of the Lake

The Lord of the Lake is a character mentioned in Inkopolis News dialogue for Piranha Pit. Although the exact details vary across localizations, Pearl offhandedly mentions meeting or at least sighting him, and Marina reacts with shock. Most localizations describe the Lord as the "boss" of Piranha Pit or as otherwise "run[ning the] place", and it is implied these appellations are related to the construction company operating in the quarry. His species is also unclear, but it is possible that he is some manner of large fish, as the Spanish localization has Pearl refer to "one of the quarry company's fat fishes". However, this phrasing may also only be figurative, as "fat fish" can roughly mean someone in a position of power in a company, akin to other localizations (although Marina's dialogue suggests she interprets it literally). The Russian localization additionally has Marina refer to him as "evil, terrible and toothy".

Octoling engineers (Side Order)

Three months prior to Splatoon 3: Side Order, development of the Memverse is mentioned in an entry of Marina's Dev Diaries to have stalled as Marina attempted to continue development even during Off the Hook's world tour. She expresses her frustration of how it is negatively impacting her own ability to focus, and decides to postpone work until the tour is on break. Further, she ponders the possibility of bringing in friends ("engineers from the old days"), who she is optimistic will be willing to assist her in completing the project in the allotted time.

After development is completed and the events of Side Order begin, it is not initially clear to the characters or the player how these engineers figure in. After the immediate danger in the Memverse is defused by the defeat of Order, its more benign incarnation Smollusk reveals progressively more detail about these Octolings on successive climbs up the Spire of Order. Specifically, it is revealed that although they willingly agreed to assist Marina with Memverse development, many of them unconsciously desired an unchanging world, ultimately leading to the formation of desires that would become Order. It is further stated that these desires were rooted in some level of resentment regarding the tumult of the mass exodus of Octolings to the surface world, and that it disrupted what they saw as peace and stability in Octarian society.

Although Order goes entirely without mentioning these characters specifically, only stating that it is "generated from the processes of many who yearn for stability" and generally behaving in a dispassionate and mechanical manner, Smollusk seems to much more openly view itself as a champion of the Octoling engineers (and perhaps any other Octolings sharing their views as well). It insists on multiple occasions that it is fighting for "everyone" and their dreams.

Octoplush

Main article: Octoplush

A musical group overall quite similar to Turquoise October who produces the majority of songs heard within Alterna. Just as with Turquoise October, although their album art depicts many Octotroopers in formation, their number, species, and background are unknown. Their music also remains a source of diligence for the Fuzzy Octarians, encouraging them to "faithfully [carry] out their work".[1]

ORCA

Not to be confused with O.R.C.A..

ORCA, or the "Occupational Regulatory Commission for Accidents", is an organization mentioned in Anarchy Splatcast dialogue for Bluefin Depot. They are seemingly responsible for creating safety standards governing workplaces. Shiver brings them up in saying that Bluefin Depot allegedly does not meet their standards, and Frye asserts that there are supposed to be railings in place near the edges. She then follows her statement up by saying "Ask me how I know", humorously implying she has fallen off the stage before because of the lack of them, much to Shiver's chagrin (she pointedly remarks that the opposite of any action Frye takes is likely to be ORCA-compliant).

The name of the organization is a play on the marine mammal as well as the United States workplace safety organization OSHA.

Shy-Ho-Shy

The Squid Sisters' original music producer, she is unseen within the games and only mentioned within the booklets included with official soundtracks.

Shy-Ho-Shy is first mentioned in the booklet for Splatune as one of the committee members that heard Callie and Marie perform at the Inkopolis Youth Folk-Singing Contest, becoming their producer soon after. Shy-Ho-Shy created a demo version of City of Color, the Squid Sisters' debut single, as a reference for them during the making of the song; this demo is included in Splatoon Live in Makuhari and features Shy-Ho-Shy's own vocals. Marina mentions in her interview in Splatune 2 that she is in contact with Shy-Ho-Shy. In the interview in Splatune 3, Marie mentions that Shy-Ho-Shy wrote the melody for the song Wave Goodbye after Callie wrote the lyrics; however, Big Man then points out that the song Tomorrow's Nostalgia Today instead features a new producer, You★Me. Shy-Ho-Shy's name is a reference to her real-life counterpart Shiho Fujii, the composer originally in charge of writing music for the Squid Sisters.

Tsukeru Okimoto

An Inkling reporter and chief editor of "Monthly TADPOLE", who is presented as the writer of an article about Turquoise October and DJ Octavio found in the booklet included with copies of Splatune. Although he seems mystified by the relative lack of information on the group, as well as the qualities of their music (noting that it embodies and encourages "diligence", a word that he states is not even found in the dictionaries of Inkling society), he overall expresses his appreciation of their work and hopes that its wider exposure will lead to a musical and cultural paradigm shift.[2]

Turquoise October

Album art seen in Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3
Main article: Turquoise October

This mysterious musical group is the contributor of most songs heard in Octo Valley and Octo Canyon. They are implied by their album arts and association with DJ Octavio (the group's producer) to consist of Octarians, but in reality their identity is unknown and deliberately obfuscated by even external sources such as Splatoon Base; not even the number of members is known, and the 'group' could in fact be a single individual.[3]

Their musical stylings are overall described as quite different to those of Inkling society, seeming to create an air of diligence around listeners.[2]

You★Me

One of the Squid Sisters' music producers, along with Shy-Ho-Shy, they are mentioned in the interview with Marie, Marina, and Big Man in Splatune 3.

In the interview, Big Man states that You★Me is a new producer who worked on Tomorrow's Nostalgia Today, with Marina noting the differences in the song compared to the Squid Sisters' previous works, including a "sense of maturity" that Marie states was added to reflect the gradual changes in Inkopolis since the debut of the Squid Sisters. According to Marina, You★Me's production style is characterized by a stronger EDM sound, featuring punchier kicks and supersaw-style synth bass.[4] Much as with Shy-Ho-Shy before them, You★Me's name is a reference to a real-life composer. In this case, it is derived from Yumi Takahashi, who arranged City of Color (2023), Tomorrow's Nostalgia Today, and Liquid Sunshine.
