Inkling is the name of the species that players control in Splatoon. Little is currently known about them.

Appearance

Inklings can alternate between a humanoid form and a "squid" form that bears a resemblance to the Bloopers from the Super Mario video game series.

The humanoid form has a black marking resembling a mask around their eyes, have pointed ears, and have "hair" that resembles a squid's tentacles. The squid form resembles a brightly-colored cephalopod with two pronounced tentacles and two large eyes that appear to be joined.

Known colors for inklings and their ink include orange, blue, green, violet, teal and pink.

Inklings are also seemingly costomizable, as different skin color, hats, clothing and weapons were seen in the second trailer .

Abilities

In addition to the ability to change in appearance, both of the inkling's forms has abilities associated with it. In humanoid form, inklings can use a special type of colored ink with the assistance of certain objects, such as a gun that resembles a super soaker. This ink can be quickly spread over various surfaces. This ink can inhibit the movement of inklings that do not have a matching color. When used as a projectile, ink can damage inklings. In squid form, an inkling can use ink of matching color to greatly enhance it's mobility. A squid-form inkling can travel through streams of ink that match it's color, which can allow it to quickly travel considerable distances and up walls.
