Have you ever heard of a “conlang” before?

A “conlang”, short for “constructed language”, is just that: a language that was constructed. It may sound niche or nerdy, but some have become so well known that even Google Translate has a translation option for some. Esperanto, for instance, is a conlang. I, myself, am working on a conlang, named “Ilinian”. The important things to note are:

  • Ilinian has 3 grammatical genders. Masculine (names and words ending in -o), feminine (names and words ending in -a), and neuter (names and words ending in -i).
  • Certain letters are pronounced differently. “C” is “CH”, “X” is “SH”, “Q” is “TH”, and “H” is usually pronounced the same but is a bit weird.
  • Accent marks decide what syllable is emphasized. If there is none, emphasize the penultimate syllable.
  • Names require special attention. The name order of one’s home nation is to be used, and family names are not to be changed beyond making them match pronunciation. Given names and middle names must match the gender of the individual, and given/middle names that don’t match up (for example, mine) need to be altered to match. With my name it would become: “Arjentu-wi Triyon-i Arkeiyik”.

I’ve actually taken the liberty of localizing many things in the Splatoon series.

Splatfest Dialogue

Power vs. Wisdom vs. Courage (This dialogue translation is unfinished.)

Dialogue Dialogue Region
Shiver

“The Legend of Zelda presents: Which do you seek? A Triforce throwdown!”
Big Man

“Ay! Ay? (Ooo! What are you all going to choose?)”
Shiver

“Let's just see what we're working on with, OK? First up, power! A must-have for battle.”

Frye

“Next, wisdom! Let it guide you along the path to victory.”

Big Man

“Ay! Ay! (And last but not least, courage! To take the first step without fear!)”

Big Man

“Ay. (Whoa. What if you could get all three? You could make a wish come true, right?)”
Frye

“Sounds good to me. I'll take all three!”

Shiver

“That's not how it works! Besides, I can make my own wishes come true. Hmph.”

Shiver

“In fact, that's why I'm on Team Power. With power, I can do whatever I want.”

Shiver

“Maybe the world isn't ready for an all-powerful Shiver...but too bad! Muahaha!”
Big Man
“Ay... (Oh...you're scaring me a little bit...)”

Frye

“Well, I've got power and courage out the wazoo, but I could use more wisdom.”
Shiver
“You're so in touch with your strengths and weaknesses...and so confident. I'm jealous!”

Frye

“Thanks! I mean, life is a series of choices, and I wanna make the right ones.”

Frye

“Plus, it'd be cool to find my way to Eeltail Alley without getting lost. Wisdom can help!”
Shiver
“...You've heard of maps, right?”

Big Man

“Ay! (Well, you can be super powerful and wise, but you still need courage to act!)”

Big Man

“Ay! (Like, when you find a wall with a crack in it, you need courage to bomb it!)”
Frye
“What are you even talking about, Big Man?”

Big Man

“Ay! (Ink wields no strength unless the appendage that splats it has courage!)”
Notes: Allusion to the quote "A sword wields no strength unless the hand that holds it has courage", said by the Hero's Spirit in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
Shiver
“What's wrong with him? Did he hit his head on something?”

Shiver

“Anyway, this is such an easy choice that I'm sure it'll be a cinch. Power for the win!”

Frye

“I'm telling you, power is useless unless you have the WISDOM to apply it correctly!”

Big Man

“Ay! Ay! (Open your eyes! The key to victory is having the courage to push forward!)”
Notes: "Open your eyes" is the first sentence the player hears when starting The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
