Information on my capture setup and how I record the S3 emotes. Please feel free to either reach out to me here or ping me in the discord if you need help with capture card configuration, and I'll do my best.

Capture configuration

A 1080p capture card with correctly calibrated colors and no serious issues (e.g. bad framerate, artifacts) is preferred. Switch capture is generally avoided because of severe compression.

I have an Elgato HD60 X, and my captures are as close to switch native screenshot colors as I could get them. My settings are as follows, any that are unlisted are not relevant:

  • Elgato 4K Capture utility -> Settings -> Device:
    • HDMI Color Range: Bypass (Shrink makes everything darker, Expand makes everything brighter. Neither look accurate.)
    • Input EDID Mode: Internal
    • EDID Mode (Internal): 1080p
  • OBS Studio -> Right click capture device -> Properties:
    • Resolution/FPS Type: Custom
    • Resolution: 1920x1080
    • FPS: 60
    • Color Space: Rec. 709
    • Color Range: Default (As above, Limited and Full both look wrong)
  • OBS Studio -> Right click capture device -> Properties -> Configure video:
    • Video Proc Amp tab: Brightness, Contrast, Hue, and Saturation all set to 128
    • Strangely, my computer does not allow me to change or see the values of any other settings in this popup, so I have to assume they're fine on defaults.

Emote recording

  • Use the player settings/equipment setup for Player 1/VeronIKA listed here.
  • Turn your player to be as close to this image as possible. The screenshot was taken near the beginning of the idle loop.

    • If you are using OBS to record, you can download the image, add it as a source, and make it semitransparent for better reference. To do this, right click on your image source -> Filters -> + -> Color Correction -> adjust the opacity however you like.
  • Equip the emote you want to record.
  • Hover the weapons menu, start recording, and scroll left once to the emote menu.
  • Allow the animation to play out, and let the end of emote loop play about twice before stopping the recording.

Editing

Any software you like can be used as long as it gets the job done and keeps the video quality as close to maximum as possible. This is just what I use.

For trimming length, I use a program called Simple Video Cutter to cut frame accurately, and I start the clip on the frame the weapon is no longer visible.

For cropping, I use the EZGif website. The settings I use are:

  • Left: 981
  • Top: 166
  • Width: 824
  • Height: 634

These dimensions/positions were chosen for maximum animation visibility while avoiding the UI. Please note that these settings will not work for Switch captures due to their smaller resolution.

After cropping, mute the video using the same website, the button should be beneath the output video. Then you're done!
