This article discusses content that is not part of the official Splatoon series but is part of the community or competitive gaming space.
Gear editing is the act of using exploits of the Wii U system firmware to change ability slots on gear. This type of cheating is used for the same reason as Save Scumming in the competitive Splatoon community, but achieves results far faster. Gear editing will result in a 2 week ban if the player does it while playing an online match. Gear editing is not detectable by Nintendo if it is done at the start screen, equipment screen, or Inkopolis plaza.[1]
Creating a Splatoon Backup
- Insert a USB drive to the Wii U console.
- If the drive is not already formatted for compatibility with the Wii U, allow the Wii U to format it. Any data on the drive will be deleted.
- Enter the Settings on the Wii U. Enter Data Management.
- Copy the Splatoon data from the system memory to the USB drive.
- Remove the USB drive. If it is left in the console, it will be used in place of the system memory for saving Splatoon.
Scripted Method

- Install Python 2.7 to the computer.
- Find the local IP address of the Wii U.
- The Wii U local IP address can easily be found by going to the Wii U internet browser settings and enabling developer tools.
- In the Wii U internet browser settings menu, clear cookies.
- Visit http://loadiine.ovh on the Wii U. Select TCPGecko + Kernel and press Submit. The home screen will appear, indicating that the kernel exploit ran successfully. Repeat this step so that TCPGecko can run.
- Launch Splatoon. Get to the start screen or the plaza.
- Download common.py and tcpgecko.py from Github - pygecko. Right click on them and select Save Link As. The location of these files does not matter as long as they are in the same folder.
- Run the script (see Sample Scripts section below) in Python IDLE after making the necessary edits to it.
- Go to the equipment screen.
- If successful, the desired gear will be there. Exit the equipment screen so that the new gear will be saved. When done editing, turn off the console so that the exploit is no longer running.

- Install Java 8 and Python 2.7 to the computer.

- If successful, a green screen will come up, and then the home menu will appear.
- Visit http://192.168.0.100/hax?tcpgecko on the Wii U.
- The home menu should appear.

Splathax Method
This method involves a graphical user interface, so it easier than the other methods. It works on computers running Microsoft Windows and Apple OSX.
- Download Splathax.
- Find the Wii U local IP address.
- The Wii U local IP address can easily be found by going to the Wii U internet browser settings and enabling developer tools.
- Run kexploit31 and TCPGecko on the Wii U. For how to do this, see steps 3-4 of the Scripted loadiine.ovh Method or steps 3-7 of the Scripted Self-Hosting Method.
- Launch Splatoon. Get to the start screen or plaza.
- Open Splathax on the computer, enter the Wii U local IP address, and click on "Connect".
- Edit gear by using the Set Ability dropdown, selecting a piece of gear, and clicking on the main slot in the lower left.
- Check the Equipment screen in Splatoon to see the changes made. When done editing, disconnect Splathax and turn off the console so that the exploit is no longer running.

Gecko dotNET Method
This method only works with computers running Microsoft Windows. This method allows for editing individual gear, rather than replacing all gear at once like the scripted methods.
- Download Gecko dotNET.
- Find the Wii U local IP address.
- The Wii U local IP address can easily be found by going to the Wii U internet browser settings and enabling developer tools.
- Run kexploit31 and TCPGecko on the Wii U. For how to do this, see steps 3-4 of the Scripted loadiine.ovh Method or steps 3-7 of the Scripted Self-Hosting Method.
- Launch Splatoon. Get to the start screen or plaza.
- Look at the scripts above to find a gear's object ID. For example, the White Headband has the ID 00000001.
- Start Gecko dotNET. In the Memory Viewer tab, enter the Wii U IP, Connect to Gecko, and use Search for the hex 00000001 (White Headband example).
- The 1st cell and 2nd cell after 00000001 have to do with the number of slots. To unlock all slots, change these cells to 00000004.
- The 3rd, 4th, and 5th cell after 00000001 are respectively the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ability slots. Change these to the desired abilities.
- Look at the scripts above for the values of each ability. For example, Bomb Range Up is 0000000C.
- Check the Equipment screen in Splatoon to see the changes made. When done editing, turn off the console so that the exploit is no longer running.
