Gear Editing is the act of using exploits of the Wii U system firmware to change ability slots on pieces of gear that the player has. This type of cheating is used for the same reason as save scumming in the competitive Splatoon community, but achieves results far faster. Gear Editing might result in a week period ban if the player get caught by Nintendo. Gear Editing is not detectable by Nintendo if it is done at the start screen, equipment screen, or while in Inkopolis Plaza.

Common methods used for gear editing include programs or mods like SplatHax and SplatHeX.
