Private Battles can have any number of players from two to eight. The host can make battles (such as 1v1 or 4v4) or even asymmetrical setups (such as 1v4 or 3v2). These private lobbies can have an assigned password set by the host, to ensure privacy among friends.

Private Battle

Private Battle is a mode made available in the August Update on August 6th. Private Battle allows groups of 2-8 friends to play together in customized matches, where the host selects the mode and stage.[1] Such battles will gain players no points and players' ranks will not be affected.[2]

Private Battles can have any number of players from two to eight. The host can create even battles (such as 1v1 or 4v4) or uneven battles (such as 1v4 or 3v2). However, there can only be up to 4 players per team, and the host cannot assign everyone to the same team. The host can also set a password for the Private Battle lobby, so that only friends who know the password can join.

It is also possible to create a private match using 8 Wii U consoles connected via a single router that is connected to the Internet.

Trivia

The numbers on the password screen make sounds when hovered over, with a few duplicates. When done in a specific pattern, the final boss theme can be played.
