Background for fall of humanity (info from 'The Complete Splatoon Lore Timeline' by @rizirone on Youtube)

• World wars happened until an event known as the Great Flood
  • World wars 3, 4, and 5 were all fought before flood
• Judd was created near end of humanity as basically a strategist to decide where to launch attacks during the wars
• Global warming becomes a massive out-of-control issue (more so than in our reality) due to unknown reasons
• Nation dropped nuclear warhead, melting Antartica (oh no the penguins, f in chat for the penguins they died for your turf wars)
• Judd was frozen to keep him safe and was injected with an immortality serum
  • Judd was created by a professor who would rent him off to warring countries for money
• Almost all of humanity went extinct except for a few groups who went off on their own to find ways to survive the Great Flood almost all of them died too
  • One group made the Octo Valley caves but no humans survived there
  • Another group made Ark Polaris with a mission to use it to travel through space and they brought a bear with them to use as a test subject but Ark Polaris was struck by something and had to return to Earth, but ran out of gas on it's way back leaving it suspended in Earth's orbit for thousands of years until pulled out of the Earth's orbit, back onto Earth where Inkopolis would eventually be located
• Alterna was also created by humans as an underground dome and the group of humans who created Alterna made the scientists their leaders, hoping their scientist's intelligence could help them survive
  • The scientists created many things, one of the most important being crystals with the ability to read minds
    • The crystals were mass-produced and were used to line the walls of Alterna to give the humans a reminder of the blue sky they once had
• Eventually the scientists of Alterna grew old and their kids had to replace them. These kids had never seen the outside world that their parents had pretty much destroyed, and they wanted to know what was out there. Against the judgement of their elders, they built a rocket to fly out of Alterna. When the rocket was launched for the first time, catastrophe struck. The rocket melted the crystals of the Alternan walls, and melting debris came down on the people
  • Those who didn't die in the calamity eventually died anyway, leaving the last colony of humanity destroyed once and for all, leaving humans finally extinct
• The crash of Alterna didn't ruin the lives of other sentient beings though, the crystals of Alterna that had melted dropping into the water below, to the aquatic life that the Alternans fed during their stay. The creatures surprisingly weren't affected negatively by this, becoming empowered instead, the crystals causing them to evolve into more human-like beings
  • The crystals shortened the usual millions of years evolution took to only a few thousand, leading the sea creatures out of the water
    • The most prominent species to rise were the inklings and octarians, though obviously other species came to be as well, such as the jellyfish
• The jellyfish evolved into a Hivemind with some rare cases of jellies breaking free and developing personalities
• One downside to inkling evolution arose when the inklings made the final leap from the water, the ability to go back to the water was lost (I personally have a head canon that Inklings can swim, just that chemicals are placed in places where inklings don't need to go, or to stop inklings from going somewhere out-of-bounds in a turf war)
• Judd finally woke up after his 10 thousand year sleep
• Supposedly there was an Inkling society that worshipped Judd and there is a sarcophagus in Shellendorf depicting this
  • The sarcophagus depicts the Inklings having splatter shots as well, hinting warfare was a thing from early on
• Inklings are supposedly superstitious
• Octolings had a good relationship with Inklings for a while, until arguments about lost land broke out causing the Great Turf War
  • Supposedly the game turf wars existed from early on
• Story is inklings were devastated during the first year of the war because they apparently couldn't wake up on time (:/) as well as the octarians having their great octarian weaponry (which are also some of the bosses fought in the first two games) but the Inklings won in the second year after the creation of the Squidbeak Splatoon (originally consisting of Cap'n Cuttlefish, Ammoses Shellendorf (Sheldon's grandpa), Judd, and two other random inklings, but by S1 the only survivors of the Splatoon were Cuttlefish and Judd)
  • Supposedly the reason the inklings won is because they had more tentacles

But wait! The story gets darker! :D

• At one point, the Octarians were wiping the floor with the Inklings, at one point the octos had rain bombs and the octos attacked the inklings with what looks like a giant squid but an octopus
• The inklings struck back with their own insane means too, ending in their win
• The war never really got resolved, the two sides still attacking each other after the war was over
• The octos were forced into the worse parts of the lands, underground
• The octarians had two main hubs, Octo Valley, and Octo Canyon, around a mile apart from each other
  • Octo Canyon is the more central hub of Octarian society
• Octarians kept producing weaponry even underground
• Octavio, the leader of the octos, decides to pursue a career in music for some reason, and became known as DJ Octavio
• Octarian society start showing signs of age at around 60-70 years in to using their main hubs, and decide to steal electricity from the Inklings on the surface (I feel bad for the octos tbh, having to suffer underground)
• Inkopolis gains popularity, and Inklings then start moving there
  • Inkopolis is part of a region called Inkadia where S1 and S2 take place

Character info

• Callie and Marie are born in 11998, 19 years before S2
  • Their rise to fame started with a youth singing competition held in their hometown, Calamari County
• Pearl was born in 11996, 21 years before S2
  • Her rise to fame also started with a youth singing contest where her voice was so powerful it destroyed part of the contest
• Marina was born in 11999, 18 years before S2
• An inkling that would eventually become Agent 3 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon was born in about 12001
• An inkling that would eventually become Agent 4 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon was born in about 12003
• An octoling that would escape to the surface from the Deepsea Metro below Inkopolis, known as Agent 8, was born in about 12003
