Other Languages

Are there any plans for other versions of Inkipedia besides English and French in the near future? Perfectionist (talk) 21:34, 15 October 2021 (UTC)

That depends on demand. The webmaster would likely agree to host a new language if a group of highly dedicated and motivated individuals ask for it. I think the low activity at the French Inkipedia shows that there isn't much demand for non-English Splatoon wikis. Heddy (talk) 00:36, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

Wouldn't a Japanese translation (along with some Japanese links/sources) be used a lot by the Japanese player base because of the amount of people in the Japanese player base is a lot larger than NA, OC and EU player bases respectively? Actually, they write more detailed strategy information than this wiki. I know this fact.

However, this wiki is more infomation (such as stage schegule, splatnet 2 shop, etc...) in one website.

So we should make Inkipedia Japanese.

Haloji86: Why do you say "But, that's not wiki."? Is the Japanese wiki https://wikiwiki.jp/splatoon2mix/ not useful? It may be better to improve that wiki, than to create a new one. Certainly, as you say, it takes a lot of time and effort to make a Japanese version.

The Spanish version released yesterday also translated more than 400 pages, so it must have been difficult.

I still have more thoughts, but I will give up on making the Japanese version of Inkipedia.

Weapon strategy main page

Currently the page linked from the main page is a category and that isn't really professional. I get the Squid400 has a page but it hasn't really gone foward recently. I'm trying on a draft and I'd like to see your thoughts. I'm trying to make it similar to the weapon page but instead is filled with competitive-minded stuff. What are Barnsquids?

I've seen a few people's user pages and all of them have these things called Barnsquids but I have no idea what they are, and I looked up Barnsquids on the wiki, found the page, read it, but still really don't understand, like how do I earn them? you can just put barnsquids on your user page once accomplishing the requirements. For example, 10 edit barnsquids is for once you made at least ten main space edits. See Template:Barnsquids for help. BadTimeGamer123 (talk) 20:33, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

Issues on my user page

There's already a page about the Squidbeak Splatoon. Here it is. As for the Great Turf War facts... As far as I know, neither game really tells you much about the Great Turf War. But if you find anything in one of the artbooks or something, you're welcome to put it on the page! Making a page about the Great Turf War has the same problem as before--there's just not enough info. Hopefully they give us more in Splat 3. I appreciate your taking initiative though! Q about adding links

Manga characters that could use a page of their own

While I was uploading manga character images a little while ago, I kept track of the characters that don’t currently have a page. So I’ll list them here:

Characters that absolutely need a page: Fierce (Fierce Fishskull), Jet (Jetflame Crest), Justice (Eye of Justice), Laceless, Double Egg, and Red Sole.

Characters that could have a page but don’t really need one: Aviators, and Half-Rim.

.52 Gal Strategy Page

So I was reading up on the .52 Gal page (just bought it in Splatoon 2) and I saw there was no strategy page. Was this left out or something? I'm posting it here because I know nothing about online strategy except for Anchors, Skirmishers, Supporters, and Slayers and to annihilate all opponents recklessly, so I can't make this page. Can anybody tell me why this page doesn't exist or if someone who understands online strategy can create this page?

Many competitive pages get added at times so it takes time for a specific page to be competitive. The ones that don't have pages aren't being left out on purpose, it usually takes time for them to be created (.52 Gal isn't the only one that doesn't have a page) ChessMaster [TALK] 00:56, 1 February 2022 (UTC) (I can make it soon)

Special Fonts not Showing???

Moderation proposal

Some gaming-related wikis (like Kingdom Hearts Wiki and ConsoleMods Wiki) have an effective anti-abuse system in place: the Moderation extension.

• This system sends edits to a moderation queue (instead of making the edit publicly visible).
• Patrollers and admins would be responsible for moderating edits.
• A problem with this is that if staff are not diligently checking the queue, it may take a long time for edits to be published. If another user edits the same paragraph of the same article while an edit is pending moderation, an edit conflict can occur which must be manually merged.
• It can be configured so that only new accounts are subjected to moderation. That's how I think we would use it, to limit the impact of moderation on legitimate users, and because we probably don't have enough staff to moderate many edits.
• There is the option to promote users to "auto moderated". This would probably be used if a new user is making many edits, and we are certain they are unlikely to make abusive edits.

This is essentially a way for Inkipedia users to stop vandalism before it even happens! Is anyone interested in this? Discuss. Heddy (talk) 19:05, 11 March 2022 (UTC)

I read the page on MediaWiki and it seems cool to me, though I do feel like just the thought of having your edits rejected/approved by a group of admins would be quite intimidating to a newcomer, even if it won't do them any harm. Just to be clear, rejecting should only happen for vandalism, nothing else. All non-vandal edits, even "bad" edits, should be approved, so that editors can improve upon the edit, provide constructive feedback to the new editor, or revert it if necessary. Perhaps you could say that Inkipedia uses the Moderation extension purely for vandals in a place that the average passerby could see, such as the main page, the "How can I help" page, etc.. What I meant to say before is that I would probably be discouraged from editing if I was told that every single edit I'd make was monitored by higher-ups without any further clarification, though I suppose somebody who isn't as shy or reticent as I am wouldn't care as much. To sum it up shortly, I think we should definitely clarify as much as possible about this extension and provide a link to the MediaWiki page for especially wary people. Agree (especially the "soften" part), but I suggest that the notice would be added on edit page itself. Everyone would still be able to access the normal edit tools. Moderation essentially adds an extra step for some edits - they won't appear in recent changes or page history until approved in the Moderation queue. Once approved, the edit will show in recent changes with the red exclamation mark, and you can do whatever needs to be done. Edits that are rejected in the Moderation queue will never show in page history or recent changes. We can probably set up a test site (separate from Inkipedia) where we may test out Moderation to see exactly how it works. I'm okay with it, since you stated that only vandalism would be rejected (hopefully mods are active enough) and a good-faith user would be granted "auto moderated" right. My suggestion, though, after the new user's edits are allowed to go through right away, mark their edits with red question marks ("!") for a few more substantial edits until they are autopatrolled. To compensate, 3 initial good, substantial edits should be enough to "auto moderate" a new user (in other words, lower the "auto moderated" bar). — Exaskliri (talk | contribs) 03:38, 12 March 2022 (UTC)

I agree, we could set an automatic promotion to auto-moderate at 3 edits (and maybe 24 hour account age). The patrolling system would continue to work as normal, so auto-moderated edits would still have red exclamation points (unless the user is also auto-patrolled). I just learned that Kingdom Hearts Wiki stopped using Moderation because it was too much effort for them. KHWiki allows users to edit without an account, so they had a high volume of edits to moderate. The Moderation queue apparently has an Approve All button, so I'm hoping it's not too much time or effort to use. I think it's not worth due to its many drawbacks. We already have a quite big restriction that only registered users can edit. I think the moderation queue will add extra unnecessary work for the staff team. Instead we should strengthen the tools that directly affect vandalism: the abuse filters (temporary ones if necessary), the email requirement for that extra step for the vandals, the IPv6 bans if feasible, etc... I second Shahar for essentially the same reasons. For how relatively rarely actual vandalism happens, I don’t think it’s worth putting this roadblock on for everyone. A good idea, but I believe more faff than it’s worth. GloverMist (talk) 17:03, 12 March 2022 (UTC)

@Shahar Patrolling is extra unnecessary work, and yet we have a patrolling system, because we want to have a good wiki with high standards where every edit is reviewed. I view Moderation the same way, extra effort, but an extra effort that will raise our quality standards. Imagine a wiki that has ZERO vandalism, period. I would like to reconsider what I said about this. Like GloverMist said on discord, if this only happens every two-ish years, then I don't think it would really be necessary to put this extension into effect, given the drawbacks. @Princewave; This specific vandal keeps abusing VPN (Virtual Private Network), which hides the user's true IP-Adress with a different one to prevent identity theft. That is why we can't get rid of them.

Patrolling would actually take a longer time with Moderation, because it's an extra step; edits first have to be approved in Moderation before they can be patrolled. The Moderation step is where edits are checked for violation of rules (only vandalism/spam/advertising/bullying is rejected. low quality edits are approved in Moderation). Then the patrolling step is where edits can be checked for quality, reverted or improved upon. Moderation cannot be used to check for quality because edits that are rejected in Moderation never show in page history. Heddy (talk) 18:51, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

Clearly I didn't quite understand the point of the Moderation extension. If Moderation is only for checking that edits follow the rules, then Moderation doesn't seem as useful to me. I think that if patrollers are already checking edits for rule breaking using Moderation, why can't they also check for quality. It seems to me that Moderation would just be adding an unnecessary step to the patrolling process, since the edits have to be essentially patrolled twice, first to check for vandalism and then for edit quality. The Moderation extension page explains it. The point is that vandalism is totally prevented. No vandalism ever appears in recent changes or page history. Patrolling recent changes can't prevent vandalism, because at that point it has already happened and you are just reverting it. Of course, we could simply disable the patrolling features and only use the Moderation features, which makes sense because everyone can check for quality of edits (not just Inkipedia staff) and staff would just use Moderation to check for rulebreaking. So, with Moderation, the vandalism would never even be published, right? I agree that that could be helpful but there should be a way to disable the Moderation extension if there hasn't been any recent vandalism. There's only large-scale vandalism about once or twice a year, so Moderation wouldn't always be useful. Also, I understand if you don't agree with me, I don't want to start an argument. I think the moderation extension sounds like a great idea. That way folks can spend their time contributing to Inkipedia instead of having to chase after vandals to revert their edits. Yes, I agree that it's only useful when there's vandalism. Based on the comments here, there are many people who don't want Moderation, so we won't enable Moderation on Inkipedia. Perhaps if vandalism got really bad, we could consider it again. Moderation will always be an option if the community here decides they would prefer a vandalism-free wiki. Do I Need Permission to Edit a Page?

Hello! I forgot about this account until now, so first of all I am sorry for the inactivity. Secondly, I was hoping to edit the Splat-Switch page to format it a bit better and add some images from the Splatoon 2 single player campaign. Is this okay for me to do? For clarification, I probably won't be editing the page's source due to my lack of knowledge on how that works, unless I can figure it out. Also as a side note, how do I make a user page? Interest check - art contest for the Inkipedia logo

When I found out that the Inkipedia logo is from Nintendo's old Splatoon website, I wondered if there would be any interest in replacing it with original art. Something original and fitting for an encyclopedia about Splatoon. Maybe art of a squid reading a book, or something like that.

We could have an art contest! With Splatoon 3 releasing this year, the number of active Inkipedia editors is increasing, and the more people involved, the better the contest would be; so, sometime this year would be an ideal time for such a contest. I could personally fund prizes which could include eshop gift cards or cash.

There is a technical reason to get a new logo: newer wiki skins require text-only and art-only versions of the logo in addition to the normal logo; we only have the normal logo, so new skins such as Vector 2022 or Timeless don't look as good as they should. So, if we were to hold an art contest, each entry would require 3 submissions: (1) the art-only logo, (2) the text-only logo, called a "wordmark", and (3) the logo with art and text combined.

Changing the logo is not something to be taken lightly, so there would be at least two rounds of voting. One vote to choose the art contest winner. Then, a second vote: art contest winner versus the current Inkipedia logo.

• I think this would be nice, as a lot of the visuals here are starting to look pretty outdated. I don't know about a precise timeframe, but I think it should be long enough to let even busy people have a chance at making art. And as for restrictions, maybe give some for format (png, I assume?) or dimensions (square, not too small or too big)?

• This sounds like a great idea! I probably won’t submit any art since little icon to thingies aren’t really my thing, but I definitely support this.
