The Kraken is a Special Weapon in Splatoon. The Inkling Squid amiibo provides single player challenges that involve using the Kraken on a timer throughout different levels.

Description

For a short period of time, the player will change into a monster-like Squid form. It can move freely on enemy ink while leaving its own trail. While no damage is received from enemy attacks, additional knockback will occur when hit. Jumping into an enemy will splat them instantly.

Usage

The Kraken must be charged by before use, accomplished by spreading ink. Once charged, the player may click the right analog stick, activating it. When activated, a message with the player's image and the special used (in this case, the Kraken) is displayed for teammates to see.

Notes

Activating Kraken transforms your character into a large, invincible squid for approximately six seconds. While in Kraken form, you can swim around a stage (including all inked and non-inked surfaces) leaving behind an ink trail your team can utilize to push deeper into enemy territory. You can also jump, taking out opponents in your path. You must jump to perform a lethal melee strike—simply bumping opponents will only push them around, inflicting no damage. But just like swimming in squid form, you can’t cross over mesh walkways or grates while Kraken is active. If you attempt to swim over a grate, you will just fall through. This is an excellent way to avoid a pursuing enemy Kraken—rush over a grate to escape.

Tips

  • When the player gets near low health, it is recommended to use Kraken as it makes them invincible from incoming attacks for a short time, allowing it to fight back or strike back the opponents.
  • A well-timed usage of Kraken can dodge and withstand all special weapons, such as an Inkstrike and Killer Wail.
  • It is not recommended to use it to chase players, as it swims slower than a normal squid.
  • The ability "Swim Speed Up" can slightly increase the swimming speed of Kraken, allowing players to go after the opponents more easily.

Countering

  • Speedy targets such as the Inkbrush can be fast enough to escape the Kraken.
  • Since Krakens are considered "squid forms", they can still go through grates. Opposing players can try to lure the Kraken user on a grate flooring to make them fall and break their pursuit.
  • Krakens are immune to everything except for stage hazards. Players should try luring the kraken into falling into water or off the map by jumping over it when it is about to get the opposing players.
    • In Arowana Mall, there is a grate spot positioned above the water. Try luring them into falling through the grate and into the water, where they'll splat themselves in the process.
  • Krakens are much more vulnerable to knockback, which can be used to keep them out of melee range. Very fast weapons, such as the Aerospray and the Inkbrush, can even allow the user to simply stand in front of the Kraken and just keep shooting (or flicking) at it to keep it away, provided they have enough Ink.
