Callie: It's tons of fun to get on top of the spinning walls!

Marie: Yeah, until you lose your lunch...

Museum d'Alfonsino is a multiplayer stage in Splatoon. It was released November 14 at 02:00 UTC[1] after being leaked on the SplatNet stage schedule on the 12th and formally announced in the Nintendo Direct later that day.

Layout

The map of Museum d'Alfonsino at Turf War.

Museum d'Alfonsino is a map that takes place in the courtyard of an art museum. It features five rotating displays which may be inked to reach a variety of high vantage points and low-lying areas.

Hazards

Lots of water surrounds the battlefield, creating an obstacle near the edges. This makes some jumps at certain points risky, as water can usually be found underneath.

Notable Locations

  • Courtyard Entrances – These are the starting areas of the map and are hard for the opposing team to reach (in Turf War). In the center, there's a rotating display, that spins counter-clockwise without halting. Going right leads to the Center of the map, and going left leads to an alternate path to a Giant Display.
  • Giant Displays – These tall, rotating displays are located on both sides of the map, before the center. Every so often, they rotate one-third counter-clockwise and stop for five seconds before repeating. Every inch of them is ink-able, allowing for players to climb up and reach grated platforms on the right side of their walls.
  • The Center – Located in the middle of the map is the central display, following the rotation rules of the Giant Displays. There are two lower areas with statues, located next to water. These areas are where most of the battling between the two teams usually takes place.

Ranked Battle

In Splat Zones and Tower Control, the respawn point for both teams has been moved to the first rotating display.

Splat Zones

The Splat Zone is located in the Center of the map. Inking the rotating display does not count towards capturing the zone. Many platforms and one statue have been added near the Center, and the central display has been shortened to make jumping on it from both sides easier.

Tower Control

The tower in this mode, is located at the center of the map, replacing the central display. The goal is found right outside the enemy's Spawn, after going through the Giant Display. The wall sticking out on both Giant Displays have been removed, and many blocks and barriers have been added, including the platforms from Splat Zones. When the tower is occupied, it will first go straight and go around the outside of the Giant Display over water. It then turns left and heads for the goal.

Rainmaker

The Rainmaker starts on top of the shortened central display. The goal is located on the rotating display in the enemy team's spawn. The Giant Displays have been altered a bit: they both have one section removed and they now rotate one-third counter clockwise, then one-third clockwise, never stopping with the removed side towards the middle. Several boxes have been added to create additional ways of reaching the opposing team's base, and a small section left of each team's spawn has been blocked off.

Tips

  • Use the Giant Displays to your advantage for dodging attacks.
  • Use bombs to quickly cover the walls of a Giant Display.
  • Be cautious traversing as there is a striking lack of inkable walls in certain parts of the map.
  • Contrary to how it initially appears, it is actually possible to reach the other team's base. To do this, swim up the large, central rotating platform and use one of its extended portions to jump onto the ledge on the enemy side. You will immediately run into another rotating platform with grate platforms extending from each leg. Swim up the central axle and one of the legs, and stand on one of the grate platforms. When the platform rotates until the leg you are standing on is passing the center of the stage and nearing the other team's base, jump off of the grate and onto the thin white wall. Drop down into the narrow, side passage and walk onto the grate platform immediately next to it. You will see another rotating platform with sections that do not reach the ground, so you will have to spray ink on these sections and wait for one to approach or pass you. Once a section that you have inked is close enough to jump to, jump in humanoid form and then turn into a squid in mid-air to land on the rotating platform. Reach the top of this platform to access the enemy team's base.
  • When playing Splat Zones, using a long-range weapon, such as an N-ZAP or the Dynamo Roller, can help you capture the zone and splat enemies from a safe distance. Stand on the grated platform closest to the Splat Zone on the large, revolving display near your Spawn Point. When the display rotates, move to the grated platform that is now closest to the Splat Zone. This provides a great vantage point to continuously ink the zone and take out enemies while avoiding enemy fire. Refill your Ink Tank by inking and swimming in the wall next to each grate, and watch out for E-Liters!

Trivia

  • The Alfonsino is a type of deepwater fish that inhabits temperate and tropical oceans.
  • Museum d'Alfonsino is the first map to change the location of both teams' Spawn Point depending on the game mode.
  • On the ground near the center of the stage is a bedazzled giant squid. It's more visible if you ink it.
  • Because this stage is set in an art museum, a lot of famous paintings are parodied/referenced. Here are the known examples so far:
    • One of the statues is an Inkling sporting the same pose as Auguste Rodin's famous sculpture, The Thinker.
    • Another statue is an Inkling with a discus, referencing a known Greek sculpture, the Discus Thrower
    • Near one of the rotating platforms are paintings of soup cans, a reference to famous artist Andy Warhol, who is famous for his paintings of Campbell's soup cans.
    • There's an Inkling version of Sharaku's most famous piece, Otani Oniji III as Yakko Edobei.
    • An Inkling version of Leonardo da Vinci's famous artwork, the Mona Lisa, can be seen near the center of the stage.
    • A painting similar to Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night is displayed inside the museum.
  • There is a large statue of a Super Sea Snail near each team's base.
  • The Squid Sisters' quote, “Ahhhh! I just love art!” | “Art schmart. I wish this was a science museum.” is a reference to the fifth North American Splatfest, for which the theme was "Which is more important? Art or science?"
  • A large statue of the Takoroka logo can be seen in the background of one of the team's base.
  • Jellyfish can be seen performing various tasks in inaccessible parts of the museum, such as painting and sculpting.
  • In the final few seconds of a match, a closing jingle can be heard.
  • When Museum d'Alfonsino is playable during Splatfests, two recordings of childlike laughter can be heard periodically. The reason for these sounds' existence is unknown, similar to the distant screaming that can be heard during Octo Valley boss battles.[2]
