Spyke can increase the number of ability slots allotted to [[:Category:Gear|gear]] in exchange for a [[Super Sea Snail]] or 30,000 coins if the player has reached level 20. If the player is at level 20, he can also reset a piece of gear's abilities (known as "re-rolling"), thereby assigning each slot a new ability selected at random. Also, if a player ordered gear from the plaza, they can pick it up from Spyke the next day at a 25% price markup.

Spyke (Japanese: ダウニー daunii) is a character found in the back alley of Inkopolis Plaza

Description

Spyke is a sea urchin. He wears a poncho, multi-colored bracelets, and clogs. He sits on rug that looks similar to his poncho.

When players first visit to him after reaching level 4, it enables them to order gear that other Inklings are wearing from the plaza. Players can order up to three peices of gear at a time, but are only able to buy one each day. If a player orders more then 3 peices of gear another order will have to be cancled to make room for it, and the new item will appear at the back of the queue.

Spyke's prices for gear are quite a bit higher than in the store. If the gear is not bought during the day its available, Spyke will get rid of it. Spyke will not trash gear in your queue in the days you don't play the game.

Spyke has the chance to get the same abilities as the original wearer on the clothing you ordered. This chance goes up with level, and the more abilities that the item has, the more expensive it is. Even with no additional abilities, the item is a little bit spendier than it is than if you find it in the shop.

Trivia

  • Spyke's design is based on the phrase "Street Urchin", which refers to homeless children who make their living on the streets of large cities. Spyke himself is a literal street urchin who makes his living working in the back alleys of Inkopolis.
  • The Super Sea Snails that Spyke gets slightly resemble a rock mushroom from the Super Mario Galaxy franchise.
  • Spyke was announced during the special Splatoon Nintendo Direct on May 7th, 2015.
  • After clearing Hero Mode, Spyke will refer to you as a veteran, showing he knows somewhat about the Story Mode.
  • Spyke speaks with a distinct British dialect.
  • Spyke's Super Sea Snails next to him shake, while some others are just empty shells. This may imply that Spyke rips them out with his screwdriver and eats them, keeping the shells.
