Draft at User:Slate/Inkipedia:Policy/Username.

Long overdue username policy. Inkipedia has unwritten restrictions on what is admissible as a username. These requirements are covered by this new policy.

Start date: 22 December 2023

End date: 12 January 2024

  1. Yeah, for the most part I can get behind this. It curtails a string of issues that tend to crop up and I think serves as a stronger security feature. I'm still of the belief names should be at minimum two characters long but we've argued over that enough and I'm willing to concede that point. Users should be able to clearly derive whether something is a page or a person and causing confusion with naming helps greatly. Bolstering other policies is a plus too. Trig - 13:43, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
  2. Very comprehensive and well thought out, really helps clarify many potential grey areas. I especially like the addition of explaining what constitutes a clearly disruptive username. GloverMist (talk) 13:57, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
  3. Very well written & easily understandable proposal. All guidelines seem reasonable. S2 Merch SAN-EI Pearl Plush.jpgkris(talk)S2 Merch SAN-EI Marina Plush.jpg 15:31, 23 December 2023 (UTC)

  7. No reason to disagree, pretty simple and clear rules. The chart at the end really helps out if you may not fully understand the text. Stay Fresh! (Btw, is my username a violation due to the fact that we cover the New Squidbeak Splatoon? If so, I can become NewSquidbeak or something, no problem. Actually kinda a problem I wouldn't really enjoy a name change. If you know can you say so in discussion pls ;-; Ok Stay Fresh!) 8. I think it's always good to have clear guidelines for what a username shouldn't be. I support. Wafer - 09:07, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
  9. Guidelines are clear and make sense, no disagreements. SquishyAuri (talk)
  10. I don't know if these really need to be written, or if they're just a given, but sure, why not. โ€“Eli (talk) 08:54, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

  15. This is a very well made, educated, and prepared proposal that I think will benefit wiki function, and for that I will vote in support. However, there are some points against certain measures proposed that I'd like to bring forward.
    A. Firstly I agree with Heddy and several others below that the ". . . the username should not directly overlap with material that Inkipedia covers." section be entirely removed or made significantly less all-encompassing. I understand the concern of search interference, but I don't find the rule worth prohibiting users who may, for any reason, like to use names such as "Marina", "Marie", or even "Captain" online from using it here.
    B. Secondly, similar to the first point, how do we determine when a username is in violation of "[containing] personal information or advertisements, such as your, or someone else's, name. . ."? (Which, unrelatedly, is written twice in the proposal). To clarify, I think it would be difficult to discern when a user has, or has not, named themself after their own given or first name. And considering the many people who already do use such a tag online, in breach of the Personal information policy regardless, I'd ultimately like some discussion on how we should apply the Personal information policy to usernames.
Any questions or discussion is welcome and encouraged. Great job on the proposal, Slate! AwildmuskS3 Weapon Main .52 Gal.png(Hablo espaรฑol?) 00:40, 28 December 2023 (UTC)

Oppose

  1. I disagree with "the username should not directly overlap with material that Inkipedia covers". If someone wants to use Marina or Splatoon 3 as their username, I don't feel we have much reason to stop them. Heddy (talk) 09:01, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
  2. For the same reason as Heddy, with an added note that "Marina" is not a rare given name in some areas, and a lot of people like to use their given name in their usernames. ArgentuTA164 (talk) 15:33, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
  3. I concur with this specific issue, but otherwise have no issues. Wave (talk) 18:05, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

Neutral

  1. I don't mind the current policies, but I'm not against the changes either. Whatever works for you, really. signature Milchik (talk) 9:10, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
  2. It's easily agreeable; with not much of a reason to disagree. But I also understand the points made by other users, so i'll go for neutral. -Random 14:05, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
  3. I very much agree with this new policy; however, I'm concerned for newer users. There is a very small but existent chance that a new user could create their account with a username very similar to that of an already existing account without knowing. This accidental violation of requirement 2.2 (usernames are too similar) can cause the new user's account to be deleted. Although we can message (or email if an email is linked) the new user who violated the policy, there's a possibility that the user may not be able to respond, which may also resort in account deletion after a period of time. Due to these reasons, I am going to be neutral, but I will be leaning towards support with how I agree with essentially everything else in the policy. Discussion

  • On Trig's 2-character minimum point, I feel like I should write here for public record. This minimum does not exist due to the allowance of non-Latin script. For example, ้ฐž (cuttlefish/squid), could be a valid username. Further, more than half the English alphabet (single letters) have already been registered and due to the grandfathering clause, I don't feel like this is a battle worth having. Finally, the policy covers no symbols and punctuation only as blockable. Slate Talk Contribs 14:50, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
  • For the point on decorators (e.g. hearts or other symbols) it maybe could be worth mentioning that those could be allowed in a signature without being used as part of the username itself. Lyichir (talk) 17:00, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
  • .I don' oppose the policy but I agree 100% with Heddy and Argentu.--Olivia (talk) 10:52, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
  • Is there a way to modify the proposal instead of shooting it down all together? There are several solid points for both sides, so it would be a waste for it to be entirely removed. -Random
