“ | Say it with sizzle... I'm Frye! | ” |
— Splatoon 3 Direct
|
Frye is a character in Splatoon 3 and one of the three members of the band Deep Cut, alongside Shiver and Big Man, with whom she co-hosts both Anarchy Splatcast, the news show of Splatsville, and Splatfests. She is also the second boss of Return of the Mammalians. Her signature color is yellow.
Appearance
Frye is an Inkling with dark brown skin, golden eyes with orange pupils in the shape of a cross, and purple tinted fingers and toes, which glow during Splatfests. Her Inkling "mask" markings are fairly thick. She has thick yellow eyelashes with a slight orange gradient to them. Her hair is yellow with purple-tipped tentacles. There is a lock on the left side of her hairstyle in the front and smaller lock on the left in the back. Her eyebrows are yellow and triangular. She has long, sharp-pointed ears, the tips of which are a lighter orange color.
Frye's right ear is pierced with three moray eel tooth-shaped earrings. Her outfit consists of a sleeveless yellow turtleneck crop top under a small yellow transparent shawl, white baggy pants with holes on the left side that have purple trims, and white toeless socks. She wears an off-white rope on her front left hair tentacle, forming an X shape, and below it a smaller tighter hair tie made from the same material. Around her waist is a belt made of the same sort of rope, with a large golden squid head charm with purple tassels hanging from it on the front left. On top of her head is a golden-colored hat with cube chunks on it, most possibly resembling fried batter or food. Under certain circumstances she wears an eel mask, alluding to a real-world tanuki mask. During Splatfests, her shawl lights up with the music.
Return of the Mammalians
Frye and the rest of Deep Cut are initially hostile to Agent 3 and the New New Squidbeak Splatoon, declaring that all the treasure in Alterna is theirs to plunder and that they won't let anyone else have it. Later, when the team agrees to give the treasure (now a broken down tool) to Deep Cut, Frye, along with Shiver and Big Man becomes the player's ally and helps them in defeating Mr. Grizz.
Boss
Frye is the second boss of the single-player campaign, Return of the Mammalians and the first Deep Cut boss. She rides on the corpse of the Octostomp and sends moray eels to attack Agent 3.The Octostomp's remains spin around on one of its corners, and its movement prevents it from being inked; touching it while it spins will inflict damage, and Frye will occasionally try to charge at the player in between her eel dances.
First Phase
Frye will use her "Eel Downpour" attack to make eels rain down from the sky; like the Tenta Missiles, their location is designated by small circles on the ground. Shooting the eels will usually destroy them, but attacking the eels with masks will cause them to fly back at Frye. She will be stunned if she is hit with enough eels and cause the Octostomp to stop spinning, allowing the player to ink the Octostomp's sides and attack her directly. Should she recover before being splatted, she will repeat this pattern.
Second Phase
Frye will now begin to use her "Eel Whirlpool" attack, which sends out an expanding circle of eels. As before, the masked eels will fly back at Frye and potentially stun her. However, the Octostomp will take longer to stop spinning and Frye will remain stunned for less time.
Third Phase
In addition to her previous attacks, Frye will now use the "Great Moray Transformation". When this attack is performed, her eels will assume a fish-like formation and relentlessly charge at the player. Shooting the masked eels will continue to stun Frye if enough of them are sent back, but she will only remain stunned for a short time before resuming her attacks.

Trivia
- The tip of her hair could allude to an eel resting in water.
Etymology
"Frye" comes from the verb "to fry", the action of cooking food over heat, contrasting with Shiver's name, which suggests cold. A "fry" is also one of the collective terms for a group of eels.
"Utsuho" is a rare Japanese female given name usually spelled with the kanji 空 (sky/void) or 空穂 (sky/void-ear), which may also be read Utsubo. It is a pun on 鱓 utsubo, the Japanese word for "moray eel". This is in reference to Frye descending from a lineage of moray eel trainers.[1]
