Frye is a character in Splatoon 3. She is an Inkling who resides in Splatsville. Along with her co-stars Shiver and Big Man, she is a member of the band Deep Cut, with whom she co-hosts both Anarchy Splatcast, the news show of Splatsville, and Splatfests. She has an excitable and enthusiastic personality and her signature color is yellow.
Frye is an Inkling with dark brown skin, golden eyes with orange pupils in the shape of a cross, and fingers and toes tinted purple at the tips, which glow during Splatfests. Her Inkling "mask" markings are fairly thick. She has thick yellow-orange eyelashes, yellow, purple-tipped tentacles with a lock on the left side in the front and smaller lock on the left in the back, and yellow triangular eyebrows. She has long, sharp-pointed ears, the tips of which are a lighter orange color.
Frye's right ear is pierced with sharp, toothlike earrings. Her outfit consists of a sleeveless yellow turtleneck crop top under a small yellow transparent shawl, white baggy pants with holes on the left side that have purple trims, and white toeless socks. She wears an off-white rope on her front left hair tentacle, forming an X shape, and below it a smaller hair tie made from the same material. Around her waist is a belt made of the same sort of rope, with a large golden squid head charm with purple tassels hanging from it on the front left. On top of her head is a decoration that looks like Mābō Dōfu or a similar fried food.
Etymology
"Frye" comes from "fry", the action of cooking food over heat. The relation to heat is in contrast to Shiver's name. A "fry" is also the collective term for a group of eels.
"Utsuho" is a rare Japanese female given name usually spelled with the kanji 空 (sky/void) or 空穂 (sky/void-ear), most notably used for the character Utsuho Reiuji from Touhou Project. It is also a pun on 鱓 utsubo, the Japanese word for "moray eel". This is in reference to Frye descending from a clan of moray eel users.[1]
