Our tireless research has resulted in a thrilling discovery! Yes, today we learned that Inklings play basketball! The existence of a new stage, Goby Arena, indicates that Inklings may even play the sport competitively.
As you can see, the details of the sport have been fairly well preserved. The arena is complete with a full-size locker room, polished wooden court, concession stands, jumbotron, VIP seating, and memorabilia shop.
Furthermore, it appears that the arena is converted into an ink-battle stage during the offseason, and this unique location should make for exciting battles indeed. We suspect that the mid-court area, along with the two basketball hoops on each side of the court, will be a focal point for all battle types. Gaining control of the hoop on your side of the stage will give your team the high ground you need to push forward. We'll continue to closely monitor this new development and will provide updates in due course.

Congratulations to team 'GG BoyZ', the Splatoon Koshien 2018 champions! They lost at the finals of the Kyushu Regionals last December, but at Nationals, they matched up against the Kyushu champion team again and won in a dramatic finale.
Fun fact: The roster of 'GG BoyZ' includes one of the most influential, well-known Splatoon players in Japan, Dynamon, who also participated in the 2017 Splatoon 2 World Inkling Invitational at E3 last year!

According to our research, the Sloshing Machine Neo will be available this evening, just prior to Splatfest kickoff. Just like the Sloshing Machine, this weapon can be effective on enemies hiding in the terrain…and just like the Sloshing Machine, you shouldn't try to wash your clothes in it (this was hard research, indeed). Today is a two-for-one deal on updates!
The first update is a b-ball revelation. The Goby Arena stage definitively proves that Inklings play basketball–something that researchers have often argued about. The arena has all the comforts of a modern stadium: a full-size locker room, polished wooden court, concession stands, jumbotron, VIP seating, and swag shop.
Just like in normal basketball, controlling the space around the two hoops will be key. What's the phrase again? "Protect the rim," is it?
Also available today are the Dark Tetra Dualies. It's an intimidating name to be sure, but this four-nozzle wonder also lets you execute up to four dodge rolls in a row! What technique! Rounding out the kit is the Autobomb sub weapon (to sniff out sneaky enemies) and the Splashdown special (to launch an attack from above). Just in! Details on the Shifty Station layout for this weekend's Splatfest. Containment chambers will drop down after a certain time and seclude part of the stage. It appears you cannot ink the secluded area from the outside, leading us to believe that whichever team gets access to the containment areas as they close down will gain the edge in turf coverage.

Breaking News from the latest Nintendo Direct! The first paid DLC is coming to Splatoon 2 this summer. Players will take on the role of an Octoling for the very first time in this large-scale downloadable content! This full-on single-player adventure spans 80 missions starring Agent 8, a new character who awakens without her memories on a dark subway platform. Navigate this mysterious underground test facility in a desperate battle to reach the surface of Inkopolis. Escape from these twisted depths, and it seems you'll finally be able to join multiplayer matches as an Octoling! How is this possible!? Does this mean we now need an Octopus Research branch too?
In addition to paid DLC, the Nintendo Direct presentation also included details on a major free update (Version 3.0) coming late April that will bring 100+ new pieces of gear, more stages rolling out throughout spring (Piranha Pit, Camp Triggerfish and Wahoo World) and a new rank (Rank X). Rank X appears to be an extreme rank, even higher than S+.

X Rank
X Rank is an extremely challenging Ranked Battle experience targeting the best of the best players. Players who are S+10 and above in the current ranking system will be re-registered as X Rank. For reference, below is a breakdown of players across each rank (as of 2/20/2018):
※Calculated based on players that played Ranked Battle within the last week
※Because we rounded up from the hundredths decimal, the total may not be 100.0% exactly
Once Ver.3.0.0 is live, players who are already S+10 or higher will be displayed as X Rank. After Ver.3.0.0 goes live, players who rank up from S+9 will rank up to X Rank.
About X Power and Ranking
Players who have ranked up to X Rank will battle for X Power rather than the Rank Meter. Players with similar X Power levels will be matched together even within the same rank of X Rank. Once a month, for each of the 4 different Ranked Battle modes, 500 players with the highest X Power will be announced on SplatNet 2.
Also on SplatNet 2, for each weapon, we will announce one player that had the highest X Power compared to other users of that weapon. This way, players can see others that use the same weapons they do.
Along with the monthly ranking announcement, X Power will reset to "Calculating" status. During the time of the reset, players whose X Power ended up lower than a set threshold will rank down to S+9. However, if X Power drops far enough, players may rank down to S+9 on the spot rather than at the time of the reset.
Changes Related to X Power Reset
Along with the monthly X Power reset, we anticipate the following changes:
Change in Weapon and Stage Additions
Up until now, new weapons have been added approximately once a week, but moving forward, it is more likely that a batch of several weapons will be added once a month.
Furthermore, stage additions are more likely to debut once a month at the time of the monthly reset.
Ranked Battle Stage Limitation
Currently, over 20 stages are rotated across 4 different battle types in Ranked Battle mode. This allows players to enjoy playing a variety of stages, but it takes an extremely long time before a specific battle type and stage combination reoccurs. This may keep players from mastering their strategy and achieving even more high-level play.
After Ver.3.0.0, the Ranked Battle stage roster will be limited to 8 per battle type. Then, at the monthly X Power reset, the stage selection will refresh to a different set of 8.
Turf War and League Battle will retain all stages in rotation.
Timeline for Changes
These changes will come into effect via Ver.3.0.0 scheduled for late April, 2018.
The first X Power reset is scheduled for May 31st.
After that, Resets will regularly occur on the final day of every month.
Summary
We've revised the system in hopes of encouraging players of all ranks to enjoy improving their play, as opposed to simply focusing on ranking up.
This change will only affect Ranked Battle, but Splatoon 2 is comprised of several additional modes including Turf War, Splatfest, and Salmon Run. We will continue to update and improve Splatoon 2 and we appreciate your continued support.

Agent 8 will face over 80 tough tests on the journey out of the underground. With a little help from 'Off the Hook' though, Agent 8 will be able to skip the tests that are just too difficult. Octolings in Inkopolis Plaza? This is highly irregular! It looks like they'll be joining in on Regular and Ranked Battles, and they'll have the same stats and abilities as an Inkling. Because of their similar sizes, they'll also be able to wear the same gear as well.
Once you've helped Agent 8 reach the surface and completed the Octo Expansion, you'll unlock the ability to play as one of these tentacled terrors.

This is Cap'n Cuttlefish, leader of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, which secretly protects the world of Inklings from Octarian forces. He looks very old, but won fame as a brave fighter. Along with his apprentice Agent 3, he's been out on patrol. Unfortunately, it looks like he somehow strayed into this underground world and lost track of Agent 3 as well.

In order to move around the underground world, a subway system called Deepsea Metro is essential. The ecosystem of the underground seems to have developed uniquely within its closed environment. Therefore, passengers you can see in the subway look quite different from residents above ground. And while they look a bit grim, it seems they're not bad guys.

We have an aquatic announcement from our overseas colleagues who are partnering with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC for short). JAMSTEC is a scientific research institute dedicated to an integrated understanding of the Oceans, the Earth, and Life, all while contributing to the advancement of academic research.
That means JAMSTEC and the Splatoon 2 game are both anchored around the key themes of the ocean and the deep sea.
In fact, the gear you can get in Salmon Run this month is the Oceanic Hard Hat, an in-game replica helmet like the one JAMSTEC staff and scientists wear every day, offering protection for their hard work offshore.
Another fun fact is that the Autobomb sub-weapon in the Splatoon 2 game took some design inspiration from a JAMSTEC research vehicle called SHINKAI 6500. Completed in 1990, SHINKAI 6500 is a manned submersible that can dive to depths of 6,500 meters.
In the upcoming Octo Expansion DLC, SHINKAI 6500 will even make an appearance, as mysteries still remain in the deep-sea world of Inklings.
You may have also noticed that a scientific drilling vessel appeared near the battle stage Manta Maria. This real-life vessel, named CHIKYU, meaning "The Earth" in Japanese, can drill in water as deep as three Mt. Fujis combined, and it continues to close in on mysteries deep inside the Earth as part of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP).

The Splatoon 2 World Championship is almost here, and we're excited to present a few more details about the tournament structure:
Seeding matches will take place using the Turf War game mode, with Semifinals and Grand Finals matches using Ranked Battle modes. Gear Secondary Abilities will be disabled throughout the tournament, meaning only the Main Ability will be active on each piece of gear. These rules combine a mixture of previous tournament rulesets, such as Splatoon Koshien 2018 and top western tournaments.
Opening Rounds (Seeding) - Monday 6/11 @ 3:30 p.m PT
• All games will be played in Turf War
• Teams will play 2 matches in a mini-seeding bracket
• After play, the teams will be ranked by win-loss record
• Of the two teams that finish 1-1, the higher seed will go to the team that won the first match
• Four stages will be available. Once a stage is selected, that stage may not be selected again
• After the first 2 matches, 2 stages will remain. The team that selects the remaining (third) stage will be selected by coin toss
• Stage Selection: Wahoo World / Piranha Pit / Manta Maria / Arowana Mall
Semifinals Matchups - Monday 6/11
• Matchups will include #1 vs #4 and #2 vs #3
• The team that is first to reach 3 wins (out of 5 games) wins the match and advances to Grand Finals

U.S. / Canada - SetToDestroyX: After defeating Japan in the 2017 Splatoon 2 World Inkling Invitational, key members of the U.S. team Deadbeat became SetToDestroyX and continued their dominance by winning tournament after tournament. They return to E3 2018 ready to defend their title after winning out over 500 teams from across the U.S. and Canada.
Europe - BackSquids: The winners of the Splatoon European Championship in Montreux, Switzerland, this German team brings a fresh name and team spirit aplenty to E3 as they try to take on the rest of the world.

Let's take a closer look at two of the upcoming weapons revealed during the Splatoon 2 World Championship.
First up, the Explosher is a re-purposed industrial heater modified to fling piping-hot ink long distances. Its shots explode on contact with walls and the ground, so it's handy for hitting foes who like to hide. The fire rate is slow, so you'll want to make good use of its incredible ink trajectory to corner your opponents.
Not to be outdone, the Ballpoint Splatling is a new Splatling-type weapon that equips a shifting system. It has a super-fast fire rate when you start shooting, but sacrifices its aiming ability and range. Once the spin slows down a bit, you can target far-off opponents with pinpoint accuracy. You can also recharge in the middle of firing by pressing the ZR button, unlike other Splatlings.

This upcoming new stage is called the New Albacore Hotel, which will be added to the game through a future update. Battles take place poolside on the rooftop of a luxurious hotel, which lets Inklings enjoy a skyscraper view of the city while they compete.

July 21st marks the first anniversary of Splatoon 2, and we're celebrating with a global Splatfest! Which sea creature is your favorite, Squid or Octopus? This hotly contested Splatfest will occur from 7/20 (Fri) 9:00pm PT - 7/21 (Sat) 9:00pm PT.
To make the event more special, players on Team Squid will play as Inklings, and players on Team Octopus will play as Octolings. Even if you don't have the Octo Expansion, if you're reppin' Team Octopus, you'll play as Octolings. On the other hand, those fighting for Team Squid will play as Inklings even if their usual character is set to Octoling.
By the way, your appearance will only change during Splatfest battles. In the Square, you'll appear as your usual rad self.
Which team will be declared the winner in this cephalopod conflict?! Will you take your time and deliberate on which team to pick? Or are you ready to declare Muck Warfare?
(Please note that the global nature of this Splatfest means Judd and Li'l Judd will need some additional time to calculate, so results will be posted 7/22.)

We've received more detail on the Pearl and Marina figures known as amiibo, launching July 13:
Apparently, by using these amiibo, you can unlock and wear Pearl and Marina's signature outfits from the Octo Expansion, and take photos atop the stage where Off the Hook perform. If you're a Squid Beatz fan, these amiibo will also add a new visual theme and sound effects to the rhythm game.

The Nautilus 47 is a new Splatling-type weapon. For the first time in the Splatling category, this weapon allows you to store your charge. Its subdued tin texture and various functions will surely tickle the heart of weapon fanatics.
The Bloblobber is a new Slosher-type weapon. We heard that after the blob law was passed, the Bloblobber was created to lob lawful blob bombs. Four blobs are emitted with each fling, and flow forward and rebound off the ground and walls. Carefully drive your opponents into a corner and throw the blobs for a tactical splat!
Last but not least, Ancho-V Games will soon be making its return as a battle stage. The setting is inside the offices of the developers of the hit-game "Squid Beatz 2".
Due to an increase in employees and outgrowing their office space, they just renovated a building next door to expand. But for now it seems like it's being used as a place to battle. Don't mind the mess!

Greetings, fellow researchers! It's time for your monthly update that happens every…uh, month. Yes, that sounds right! The below stage and weapons will release tomorrow evening, July 31, @ 5pm PT.
Ancho-V Games (the hit developers of the addictive Squid Beatz 2) have opened up their office space once again! Inklings and Octolings should be on the lookout for a few renovations to this important location. Hopefully using their office like this won't delay future development of their games, but it seems like a risk they're willing to take!
There are also four new weapons:
Inspired by a bathtub, the Bloblobber lobs lawful blob bombs (hardly a way to make anyone clean in our opinion). It comes with the Splash Wall to provide cover from enemy attacks and the Ink Storm special to support your teammates.
Splatling fans take note! The Nautilus 47 is the first Splatling that allows you to store your charge while swimming in ink. You can bet your tentacles that sneaky players will use this to great effect. Rounding out the kit is the Point Sensor to help spot opponents, and the Baller special that rolls deep…into enemy territory.
The Light Tetra Dualies are beauties with the same specs as the Dark Tetra Dualies but also come with Sprinklers, (for automatic turf inkage) and the Autobomb Launcher (which is always nice to push forward with).
The Custom Hydra Splatling has the same destructive force as the original, so be careful! This kit is all about defense: Ink Mines and Ink Armor are a potent defensive combination.

Starting with Ver.4.0.0, Splatfests in Splatoon 2 will be changed significantly. Two new modes, Normal and Pro, will replace the previous Solo and Team modes.
In Normal mode, you can jump into a Splatfest Battle on your own or join up with one to three friends from the same Splatfest team. If you join a match as a group of two or three, random solo players will be matched up to make a group of four.
In this mode, the amount you inked is added to any win bonus you get to determine your clout. If your team is on a win streak, the game will try and match you against teams with a similar streak.
Moreover, when weapons, gear, or general styles of four players in your team meet certain conditions, a nickname and a matching bonus will be given to your team.
Pro mode is for those who want to go solo and push themselves to the limit. In Pro mode, you're judged on your Splatfest Power. Raise it high enough and you could make it into the Splatfest Top 100! In this mode, you increase your clout by beating the opposing team. You get more clout for beating teams with a higher Splatfest Power.
In addition to the above, 10x Battles will be added in both divisions. These are rare matches that will occur if you are lucky, and if you win, your contribution points will be multiplied by 10! And believe or not, there is a rumor that super rare 100x Battles could also occur!
If your friend wins a 10x Battle or if someone wins a 100x match, teams may appear on the big screen in Inkopolis Square. Also, if you're in the lobby or during matchmaking, such information will pop up on your game screen like a news flash. Team nicknames are also shown in Regular mode, so you may want to try scoring a cool team name and winning these rare matches for bragging rights!
The final Splatfest results are decided based on three factors: votes, clout from Normal mode players, and clout from Pro mode players.
Even if your side loses the popularity contest, Normal and Pro mode victories can slowly but surely turn the tables! Of course, participants on the winning side will receive slightly more Super Sea Snails as a reward for their victory! Good luck!

Speaking of treats, you can get special in-game treats! Via an upcoming Nintendo Switch News article scheduled for this Friday, 10/5, you'll be able to receive four different pieces of spooky headgear. You will need to follow the Squid Research Lab Report (Splatoon 2) News Channel on your Nintendo Switch, and launch the Splatoon 2 game from the corresponding news article. If you haven't followed the channel yet, now is a great time to consider it!

• Li'l Devil Horns
• Hockey Mask
• Anglerfish Mask
Our researchers have two notes about this:
1) Please make sure that you either have the game card inserted or the digital version of the game on your system.
2) Be sure to receive the items before the article ink-dives off your news feed. We recommend grabbing the items as soon as possible!
Reports indicate that Inkopolis Square will also be getting quite the Splatoween makeover to spice up the festive atmosphere. You might even spot other residents of Inkopolis getting into the spirit!
Even battle stages will receive Halloween-themed graffiti. Outside of battle, you might want to use the Recon feature to freely explore!

We just uncovered more details about an upcoming new special weapon! The Ultra Stamp lets players attack with an enormous hammer. Pressing and holding the ZR Button allows you to advance while striking with the hammer! It looks like you can guard ink attacks coming from the front, but your back is exposed.
If you press the ZR button while you're in the air, the Ultra Stamp will flip vertically so you can attack opponents mid-air. You can also throw the stamp with the R button to attack a distant opponent! Of course, throwing away your special weapon will end your attack.

We've just received a fresh report about a new sub weapon called the Torpedo. When thrown near an enemy it changes shape and targets the foe, exploding on impact and splatting ink everywhere. Torpedoes thrown by opponents can be shot down with your attack.

On November 6th, the latest Kensa Collection weapons arrive!
First off, the Kensa Splattershot Jr. features the new Torpedo sub weapon so you can hunt down your opponents, and the Bubble Blower special weapon so you can hold your ground!
Next up, it's the Kensa Octobrush! Paint the town red (or more accurately, your team's ink color), with this new brush! It features the Suction Bomb sub weapon and the new Ultra Stamp special weapon!

This evening, December 4th, the 4th set of Kensa Collection weapons will be added. These stylish special-ordered weapons feature a different combination of sub and special weapons than their non-Kensa equivalents.
These weapons all feature one of the recently announced sub or special weapons, including the Booyah Bomb, the Fizzy Bomb, the Ultra Stamp, or the Torpedo.
Kensa .52 Gal
This stylish shooter is the perfect polka-dotted pick for players who prefer to splat at mid-range distances. Its slow rate of fire is countered by its big damage! It comes with the Splash Wall sub and Booyah Bomb special.
Kensa Glooga Dualies
While these Kensa brand Dualies perform similarly to the Glooga Dualies, their striking black and white color scheme is all their own. These two-tone titans come with the Fizzy Bomb sub weapon and the Ink Armor special.
