Etymology

The origins and meaning of the term "amiibo" are both rather unclear. Bill Trinen of Nintendo of America has statedTIME article about amiibo, including statements from Nintendo's Bill Trinen that the "amii" is "from a little something in Japanese that conveys the sentiment of [...] playing with your friend"; he also notes a similarity to the Spanish amigo ("friend"), but states this was not part of the origin of the term, merely that it "conveys the intent".

The doubled lowercase "i" may also be seen as linking to the Wii or Wii U consoles, or by extension Miis (which are also still present on the Nintendo Switch).
