Signatures are purely wikimarkup, allowing the user to add extremely large images, line breaks, and other irritating and obtrusive content (some of which could be inappropriate.) It is important that users realize what they are doing to talk pages when they sign with such content.

The following is unacceptable
  • Content that violates other policies.
  • Any part of the signature, including images, larger than 30 pixels in height.
  • Elements that expand the height of the line on which they appear.
  • Line breaks and content that takes up any more than one line, unless there is no room for the signature to fit.
  • Malicious external links.
  • Elements with absolute or fixed positions.
  • Elements with relative positions with extreme locations.
  • <blink>, <marquee>, or code that is a disruption.
  • Markup that categorizes pages.
  • Unclosed HTML tags or Wiki markup.

Users are expected to sign their comments with ~~~~ on talkpages.

Creating a signature

Below is the cleanest and preferred way of creating a signature.

  1. Create your signature code and place it in User:YourUsername/Sig.
  2. Go to Preferences, scroll down to Signature.
  3. In New Signature, type {{nosubst|User:YourUsername/Sig}} into the box.
  4. Make sure the box marked "custom signature" or "Treat signature as wikitext" is checked.
  5. Press Save.
  6. You can now edit User:YourUsername/Sig and it will be updated throughout the wiki for each change.

Note that this will not change any signatures you have written before following these steps.

New users are confused with the ~~~~ mark, believing that it is a decoration or a separator of some sort. It is not. All you need to type is ~~~~: you do not type ~~~~UserName or ~~~~UserName~~~~.

Signing for someone else

When you see that someone else has not signed their comment in a talk page, it may be helpful to sign the comment for them.

To sign someone else's comment, use Template:Unsigned. First, go to the history page so that you can copy the username and time. Then paste the username and time into the template like this: {{subst:unsigned|Username|00:00, 1 January 1970 (UTC)}}
